How are your local MLB announcer teams? (1 Viewer)

Not to dig up too old of a thread, but every time I hear Howie Rose announce a Mets game I remember why listening to a baseball game on a sunny day outside can be so much fun. He doesn't let his shtick get in the way of the game, lets the game dictate how his calls are made as opposed to a mechanical sameness, and while he's a bit of a homer he's not obnoxious about it and genuinely sounds like he enjoys being there and tries to ensure that you enjoy the game as well. Very much old school.

AwfulAnnouncing's 2014 rankings are up. MLB's streaming package makes it a lot easier to hear out of market announcers than it used to be so a readers' poll isn't necessarily a flawed methodology. It's still kind of tough to get a good feel of an announcing team unless you listen to them on a regular basis.

The White Sox are dead last so the poll has some validity.

Funny because here in the DC metro they have a great TV team in Baltimore, a horrible TV team in the Nats, a bad radio team in Baltimore and a good radio team in the Nats.

I do not like Rod and Mario and think 11 is way too high for the Tigers team, but I have been accused of taking it too seriously which those two certainly do not. So I think they relate well to average fans.

Tigers radio team is top five though.

For as great as Tom Hamilton is his right hand man Rosie is unbearable. I would rather listen to Hawk call a walk off vs the a tigers than an inning of that bum.

I really enjoy the Rays team a lot. Surprised they only came in 16th. Staats and Anderson are fantastic. They even got my wife into baseball; she likes listening to the two of them. They're good.

Sox at 13. Orsillo is good but Remy really lost it even before his thanks dad kid Sox employee became a murderer. Eck is fantastic when Remy is out

It's a shame the Mets team isn't higher. Gary, Keith, and Ron are a fantastic, fantastic team. I like their radio team as well, especially Josh Lewin.

Ya I don't get it. I definitely would NOT rather listen to Hawk, but Rosie is not good. Can't stand Underwood either but I'd take him back on the radio to upgrade TV alongside Manning.

I still love catching Vin when I can. I tell my kid, 'just listen, I loved this guy when I was a kid'.

And that just stems from NBC...can't imagine how great he must be to people that go further back.

Maybe I've just adapted over the years living here, but Underwood doesn't bother me as much anymore. Don't get me wrong, he isn't good, but his voice kinda drowns into the background pretty well. Manning's good regardless, but he helps him look even better,

You don't like Rod and Mario? Why not? I think they are great.

I see you, DD.

Do White Sox fans like Hawk or do they hate him as much as everyone else?

As awful as Hawk is, John Sterling may be worse. Its a travesty how he has bastardized the profession. He should be embarrassed.

Of the 4 guys you two mentioned, imo Dan Dickerson is first rate, Price & the other 2 not so much.

I agree with you, though I think the TV guys are entertaining without being absurdly obnoxious and showy (see Hawk and Sterling).

Yeah that's not saying a lot though. I consider them somewhat goofy and Rod Allen always has to mention his place on the 1984 team, when he got 27 at bats that year. I've worked with them before, they are both cool, but I don't care for their style at all. I'm probably too hard on them but I prefer not to watch them if I can help it.

Jim Price is a super homer but he'll also call a spade a spade, but he's not all that great. If Dan had a real good color guy like Steve Stone, they'd be the #1 radio team in baseball IMO.

I didn't realize you worked with them. I've always heard a rumor that they don't get along. Do you know if that's true?

This may be wrong, but Hawk is so bad he has become a guilty pleasure of mine. #ducksnort

That was in 2005, so things might have changed but I never heard that before. I know a guy who still works with them daily, I'll ask him when I see him later this month.

I feel about him the way RN feels about Francesca (minus the desire to commit violence). He's terrible.

Brian Kenny can be more than a little smug when it comes to sabermetrics, so it was amusing to watch him get thoroughly frustrated during an interview with Harrelson when Harrelson kept responding to every question with absurd logic and lunkheaded cliches.

Harrelson will be a treat tonight if they are losing to the Cubs. You'll hear dagnabbit, then the worst whatever in the 50 years of baseball he's seen. then a story about the '67 Red Sox.

Who is the radio PBP guy I'm listening to for the Royals? He has a gruff voice, never gets excited about anything and sounds roughly 115 years old.

I cannot stand Blunderwood. I watch Tribe games on the opposing team's feed as much as possible, unless they're playing the Yankees or White Sox. When I buy the Indians, he is so fired.
