How can washington continue to sign guys? (1 Viewer)

Some weird formula called "Cash over the cap"

I have NO idea how it works, but they talked about this during the CBA talk.

First off, that article might be including deals announced, but not yet filed with the league office.

Secondly, with a trade, the team has 24 hours to get under the salary cap if the trade pushed them over.

ESPN's latest update has them 4.9 mil over the cap.  What gives?  How can they afford anyone?

They were over BEFORE the new agreement, not AFTER. If the agreement did not get done they would have been in trouble.
correct......once the new league year starts (remember how many times it was pushed back last week?), which is usually ~ March 1 or 2, a team can not over the cap...period

remember, players are under contract until that date--those who's contracts run out become FA's, or if they have a big cap number, they are cut prior to the date, so that their money doesn't count (this is how several players were signed last week before the start of Free Agency--once cut, they are free to sign w/a new team)

Wash also had several players rework deals, to get '06 cap number down--this is what they do every year, which will continue to work as long as the cap grows at the rate it has (was ~$60M in '01)

Danny has the cash to make this model effective--if you don't have the cash up front to pay these guys, or if the cap growth slows, there is hell to pay---neither seems to be a problem in the foreseeable future for WASH

Brandon Lloyd is getting 5.5M per season? Good lord the 'Skins just give away money.

Safety Adam Archuleta kept getting calls from his former Rams defensive coordinator, Lovie Smith, who was trying to recruit him to come to the Chicago Bears and help out his defense.

But the Redskins flashed $10 million in guarantees and a contract worth close to $5 million a year, and those thoughts ended. Archuleta became the Redskins' fourth addition from over the weekend, joining receivers Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle El and tight end Christian Fauria.

Archuleta flew to Washington on Saturday on Daniel Snyder's private plane and stayed for the weekend until the Redskins finished the deal.
