This sounds funny, I think he is done for the year. Detroit can keep losing and still run away with the division crown with the QB situation in that division. McCown and Flynn/Tolzien aint leading these teams anywhere.

The Bears wouldn't be any better with Cutler in there right now. There's no comparison between McCown and GB backups. Offense isn't their problem.

Cutler is in the final year of a five-year, $49 million deal he signed in 2009. The Bears would have to shell out something in the neighborhood of $16 million on a one-year franchise deal, but they'd get to evaluate him for another season without making a long-term commitment. Cutler's inability to stay healthy will certainly be a factor in negotiations. He's currently sidelined by a high-ankle sprain, missed time earlier this year with a groin issue and sat out six games in 2011 due to a broken thumb.

He's a better passer than McMahon can even dream of. Cutler has a better arm and better escapability. McMahon was an excellent leader, don't get me wrong. I absolutely loved Jim McMahon - but Cutler is a much better QB.

Honestly, if you had heard the interview live (which I did) - he was pretty much saying "Sure, I'll skip an OTA or two to make a point, but there is no way I'm holding out or doing anything that is long term detrimental to the team." He basically said there is no way he would hold out - or miss significant time. Kinda the opposite of what the original quoter was trying to imply.

If you look at what Romo, Flacco and Ryan are making in deals they just signed they are making between $18 million and $20 million a year. I know you can tweak the structure of the deal to some degree but to get the long term deal you are going to have to sign Cutler to a deal in the ball park of probably upwards of $90 million over maybe 6 years with maybe $45 million guaranteed. That is if Cutler is willing to settle for less than Romo got. Romo has been to three Pro Bowls to Cutler's one. Romo is 1-3 in the playoffs. Cutler is 1-1, but got hurt in the second game. The number I've heard for the franchise tag is $16.2 million. I don't know how they come up with that, but if that is the number it would would be cheaper to franchise him, and then you have another year to evaluate him. In addition, if you draft a QB you can spend a year developing the rookie to see if he is any good. The tag just makes more sense to me.

It may just be because I am a Bears fan and we have had such poor QB'ing over the years but I sincerely hope he gets signed long term. I think he is quite a bit better of a QB than Jim McMahon (though JM was a better leader overall) and I would rather not lose that to play the lottery in the draft but it may just be from being gun shy from what we have done with QB draft picks in the past.

He has a signing bonus of $29 million. He has option bonuses of $23 million. His salary in years 2014 thru 2018 are as follows, $6 million, $4 million, $18 million, $20.6 million, and $20 million.

I'm guessing that his salary is structured to give them salary cap relief early. But I believe the signing bonus is prorated over the life of the contract. According to the article his cap number is $28.55 in 2016, $31.55 in 2017, and drops to $24.75 in 2018. It says he would probably be in line for an extension after 2015.

It's quite possible the Bears are just getting his feet wet ahead of a possible return in Week 15. With Josh McCown playing extremely well in Cutler's absence, the Bears don't have to force the issue. For the moment, we still expect McCown to get the start on Monday Night Football.

Do you think there's a comp between the Bears' situation and the Falcons with Roddy/Julio? It seems to me like Jeffery is a step below Julio (and that's no slam on Jeffery; Julio is just that good) and Marshall is probably a a little more dominant than White. But I agree with Dr. Brew that Jeffery will be overrated precisely because too many people will make the comparison and assume Jeffery is going to be the next Julio.
