How do you see Charlie Frye's future? (1 Viewer)

Media types seem to indicate that the long search for a QB is over in Cleveland. I sometimes read posts that indicate otherwise.I personally think the guy is a gutty young kid that keeps his composure under bad circumstances. He didn't show a tendancy to throw picks which is nice. He has a decent to good receiving corp in Braylon, Bryant, Northcutt and Winslow. It seems like Droughns will provide an adequate ground game. The defense is scrappy and should be much improved this year with an infusion of talent on draft day. He has pretty good mobility. By all accounts he is a film room rat who tries hard to improve his game and football knowledge. His main flaw is mechanics that shows up as arm strength issues. This can be worked on,IMO.I really think this guy can turn out to be pretty strong QB in real terms. In fantasy terms he is probably still a #2 QB until he shows otherwise.

I think he has a good shot to amount to something. He certainly didn't embarress himself in his starts this season. He showed he at least deserves a chance to see what he can do IMO.

Quarterback Charlie Frye, back at the Browns' training complex in Berea after vacationing in Arizona, is fed up with critics who doubt his arm strength. "We can go get on the field right now," Frye told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I'll show you how far I can throw it. They were saying the same thing about Bernie [Kosar]. I feel I can make all the throws. I've made all the throws. I'll show anybody I can make all the throws. Hopefully after this season we can end that."Our ViewFrye originally intended to remain in Arizona until March and work out with strength coach Warren Anderson; instead, he returned to the Browns to work out with Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow, both of whom are rehabbing knee injuries. While he hasn't officially been anointed the Browns' starter for next season, it would be surprising if Romeo Crennel went another direction.

While I do think he will be an NFL QB the jury is out as to whether he'll be better suited as a starter or a backup. Both are possibilities. You'll know pretty quickly what the Browns think about him by what they do this offseason. If the Browns don't do anything big with the QB position this offseason than 2006 will be Frye's year to prove what he's all about. The pressure will be on him this year to at least show he can be their QB of the future. The guy isn't a big time prospect like an Eli or Big Ben so the leash will be shorter and he'll really need to show he belongs this year for the Browns to commit to him long term.

Crennell has said the qb job is open next season. They want to re-sign Dilfer, so they probably will be competing for the starting gig. Frye got sacked too much in 2005. He has got leadership and some good skills. With Edwards and Winslow he could be a good value in '06 once he gets the job.

I don't ask rookies to be perfect. But what I do ask is that they at least show flashes of having something special. I didn't see it with Frye. I think at best Frye will be adequate.

Looking at the play-by-plays to refresh my memory.Jacksonville: Frye's first start. Did ok in the first half. Then the Jaguars changed up their defense to screw up Frye and he looked horrible.Cincinnati: Frye's best game. He got two TD passes - one drive starting at the CLE 44, the other on the CIN 19 - but hey, they were TDs. Oakland: This game was rather troubling. The Raiders were awful but Frye really didn't do anything of note here. Pittsburgh: Frye looked terrible in this game. Like he didn't even belong in the NFL. Baltimore: Last game of the year. The Browns' offense was really stagnant for long stretches of time. It felt like neither offense could move the football, really.

I think the "open competition" line is an inducement to get Dilfer to re-sign. If they tell him he's a backup, he's likely to look for a different gig, like Detroit or Miami (or a return to the Ravens).I think Frye is good enough that QB is not a major problem for Cleveland. I'd say take Greenway/Hawk with the 1st rounder, spend on some solid OLs, and let Frye steward the team.

BINGO!

Too early to judge. Look at what was around him this year, the Browns were below average everywhere on offense with the possible exception of RB. If/when the Browns upgrade the O-line and get some of their weapons (Winslow, Edwards) back healthy then we'll see what the kid has. It's tough enough for a rookie QB to play well with talent around them, with nothing it's next to impossible...see Alex Smith.

He started 5 games against 3 playoff teams, beginning the year as the 2nd string. What the #### did you expect? The jury is still out, but I'm more excited about the QB position than I have been in a long time.

They were saying the same thing about Bernie [Kosar]. I feel I can make all the throws. I've made all the throws. I'll show anybody I can make all the throws. Hopefully after this season we can end that."
How does Frye know what they said about Bernie Kosar? Kosar's last days as a starting QB were in the 80s.

i mostly agree. i think he's been too hyped up, but i think he showed enough improvement to give him a chance next year.

Wasn't Bernie benched by Belichick when Bill was coaching the Browns in the early '90s?

1993. Benched, played, then cut.

Then won a Superbowl Ring.

With Dilfer on the way out, it's Frye's job to lose?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Unless they sign a vet like K.Collins. Either way, I think its Frye's until he screws it up.

The odd thing is that they did try to get Harrington from Detroit. So it seems like the coaching staff does not have a ton of confidence in Frye. Any other veteran QBs out there who the team is looking at?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
True, but I think that is more for a backup role. Same with Harrington in Miami. It's to backup Daunte (or cover until he's healthy). If Phil thinks Joey can start over Charlie, then it may be the second franchise Joey has killed...

Just checked some stats. His qb rating of 72.8 was better than the rookie years of Peyton(71.2), Eli(55.4), and McNabb(60.1).  :o

 I thought the kid showed a lot last year. With JJ and KWII on board we might have the next Drew Brees type QB here.
