How likely is it that the Lions move up? (1 Viewer)

They really need to get an impact LB or DB.

IF the NFL can get the CBO done soon after the last whistle is blown, which I think will be the case. Then most likely the NFL will have some kind of a rookie pay scale. Which will make it more feasible to move up, in the first round. The Lions have something that a few teams ahead of them might be willing to deal for. Shaun Hill, has shown that he is a starter QB in the NFL and that combined with the #13 pick might be enough for a few teams to make a deal with the kitties. There is no way Carolina at #1 moves down unless Detroit gave up a whole lot more. but places like Arizona at #5, San Francisco at #7 and Tennessee at #8 might be interested in switching 1st round picks and pick up a veteran starting QB as well. It will be interesting to see what happens! I personally think that the Lions should hold onto Hill as insurance for Stafford. But some think that the Lions can find another viable #2 QB out there.

If the NFL initiates a rookie wage scale the earlier 1st rd picks regain their value thus the Lions 1st rd pick and Hill would not nearly be enough for Az, SF, or Tenn to make a deal.

Exactly...while many of the talking heads say it will be more favorable for teams to move up if there is a rookie pay scale, they tend to leave out the other side of the coin which is a #7 slot most likely will not cost a team $10 million or so more than a #13 slot. Now, if they don't like what they see on the board, I can see where you are going with this, but after a second season where Stafford was injured and missed time, would it be the best thing in the world for the Lions to give up an excellent backup? If I were a Lions fan, I would like to see Stafford get through one season before we cast off his backup. The Colts have been playing Russian Roulette with their backup slot for over a decade, but that is the exception versus the rule.

Shaun Hill isnt worth a move up in the first
 Agreed. Moving from 13th to 5-8 is worth a solid 2nd rounder. Lions could probably make that move in the second round if they wanted to. Going from #45 to #37 is worth a 4th rounder.

Not really sure I'd want to risk my job on Stafford staying healthy if I was Schwartz and Mayhew though.
I agree that I would if I were running the show want to keep Hill as insurance. but its fun to think about!

If anything, the Lions should trade back and pick up another first day pick. You find impact players in every round. The Lions can use all the talent they can get.

Yeah, agree with what people are saying about the value of the pick.

Now, with a rookie wage scale (if it gets done)...does anyone see the Pats being a player to move up with all of their picks? I think part of what they were against in 1st rounders in recent years was paying them that much so they moved back and acquired more picks.

Would this make them any more likely to move up?

  Mayhew seems to stick very close to the vest and not deviate outside his plan much...I could see him moving down before moving up if he does trade that pick.

The Lion's are not getting rid of Shaun Hill....and....Nobody is placing their Franchise in Shaun Hill's hands.
Exactly. As brittle as Stafford seems to be, Hill isn't going anywhere. He played rather admirably when he was in and playing. What we needto do is go OL OL OL, but by all indications, this is a much weaker draft at OL then years past. Still, we have got to get some sort of consistent, young line play. That, and of course continue building the defense. A HUGE difference this year, but we are still giving up too many points.

Lions won't trade Hill. They are more likely to trade down than trade up IMO. There will be an impact LB available when they pick. The Lions will take the best player available at LB/DE/S/CB/OL

Honestly, even Stanton played better than anybody thought. Shaun Hill could get a starting gig, but you aren't going to move a first rounder for him. A 3rd rounder is his ceiling. Remember, he is basically the reason the 49ers had any expectations this year.

I have my doubts about Stafford.QBs are overpaid to a degree so many become FAs that might not be now or can be had in trade to simply take over their high salary. I'd like to know who is available in a couple months.

I'm fairly confident I will feel that the Lions would be better off trading Stafford.

I don't get the feeling he's great and do think there is somewhat of a glass jaw thing going on. It could be like when people said Schaub always misses a ton of games and that isn't the actual case but instead the feeling....still that's how I feel about Stafford.

I can't stand Stanton.

They have the OKState guy as their 3rd QB and then Hill.

Hill and some veteran they sign can battle it out or they can just go with Hill. Generally once a player is signed we know which vet will start.

They could draft another QB to replace Zac Robinson but what's the point in fiddling with the 3rd stringer developmental spot? It's not like they're loaded with talent and depth at every other position that third string should be a glaring concern.

I don't think they should draft a rookie(2011) to play QB. Calvin and co are ready now or very soon. They don't have time to wait while a rook develops.

Stafford traded for an OL or for a WR opposite Calvin or to give Schwartz more impact players on D. I like all that plus, I still haven't even suggested what they take with their first rounder in this scenario so that's even better.

I guess to abbreviate this for quoting-I don't think Stafford is that much better than Hill. I'm not sure he ever will be.
