How many leagues is "too many"? (1 Viewer)

I noticed quite a few people saying " I made 3 finals" or "glad I am still alive in my other 4 leagues". My question is when is it too much? I now only play in one league but did play in two for a while. With a wife, kids, job, social life, playing actual sports, etc... I find it way too time consuming to play in more then one or two leagues. In my opinion, the worst part would be trying to keep track of what guys help you in which league. You end up having a guy in one league and playing against him in another.

Any thoughts?

For 2011 or any year? Just wondering becasue I think I've read this topic at least once before. I'll go with 3 is too many. I'm in one dynasty and 1 redraft. This year was the first time we drafted poorly and ended up unable to decide who to root for. Never take a top QB in redraft that is in your division in dynasty. Man does it suck. Hell, we faced Jennings 3 or 4 times (due to him being traded like a cheap ho) and he's on my dynasty team.

Its different for every person. I play in 6 and I have "a wife, kids, job, social life, playing actual sports, etc... "

Not sure what other people's issues are. Maybe they can't manage their time?

i'm in 6 pay leagues and I'm good with that. I still have time for my job, extra-curriculars, family, kids, etc...... ....

I think my ideal number would be 4 but i'm probably going to be in the same 6 again next year......

99% will prolly say that's too many, but i'm in that 1% that doesn't.....

No wife, No kids, Work full-time with computer access all day, active all year round.

I was in 7 money leagues this year, and 3 free leagues...Half of the 10 leagues are dynasty...

I would say the kids and wife factor is key. Although I know of people, married with kids, play softball, work, etc...that are in just as many leagues as I am, so it is not a given that one with a family would commit less time to the "hobby"

For me, 10 leagues is easy...I spend about an hour a day looking up news and what not, which allow me to stay current with FA and injuries, etc. Not only that, but I have a separate account for fantasy football purposes...perhaps that is taking the "hobby" to a completely new level, but I prefer to never let a "hobby" take over my life.

Don't overdo it. Otherwise it kills the fun. I prefer to have so many leagues that one guy is winning me one game, and he is totally screwing me in another...but I'm sick :bye:

I used to be in like 6 or 7 and got "burnt out"

I whittled down to 3 a few years ago, basically quit all but my 3 long time leagues. Love it now. Plus they are 3 different formats.

My league is a 1 player keeper

1 dynasty

1 redraft auction

I say 3 to 4 is max for me. I could be in more but like to be in leagues with people I know with something on the line eve if it's only 20 bucks or something. Never did a free league with strangers

There are so many factors that play into how many leagues someone can handle. I was fine with three leagues and the following year I joined one more (a salary cap league) thinking a 4th wouldn't be an issue. Shortly before the season started I accepted a new position at work that required a lot more travel to areas with limited internet. At that point, 4 leagues was WAY too many.

I've settled on two leagues. A dynasty and redraft. Its the perfect amount for me. I'd consider a third league again if the group is right. Any more would be too much.

that many leagues just takes too much away from gameday for me. How do you even know which guys the teams you are playing against are starting?Having too many leagues gives me a "robotic" feel on gameday. I don't get too high or low because there are so many moving pieces. A bennie wells TD in one league just means points against me in another league. Takes the fun out of it.

For me it's 2.

I joined 4 leagues this year and in 2 of them I'm in the Superbowl this coming weekend. The problem? 4 "stud" players that I have on one of these teams are all on the team I'm playing against in the other game. So it looks like I'm probably destined to win one and lose the other.

My sweet spot is 2 active leagues.

I tried 3 one year and it just became too much...felt like I could never totally root for any players as somehow they hurt me in another league which I didn't enjoy.

With 2 leagues it allows a diversity of owner intraction and strategy exploration that you can't get with only 1 league.

Disagree. I need to have a vested interest in every single game...if I don't, then I'm not in enough leagues...(yes I even own browns, somewhere)

4 is the max for me. would prefer 3, but that would be dropping the office league. I'm running 5 this year and its not as fun.

3 is the sweet spot for me. The last couple of years I have done 5 leagues or more and it's just too many. The main problems are waivers and last minute lineup decisions.

Two is too many for me. It seems weird to possibly be rooting for and against a specific player on any given weekend.

Plus I think multiple leagues marginalizes success. Under the "Sun shines on a dog's ###" principle it's easy to say that you've won multiple championships if you play in six leagues every year. Hell it makes you a pretty bad FF player IMO if you don't win a championship or two every year under that scenario.

I used to be in 6-8 leagues every year but decided to cut everything down to ONE dynasty league. It was a great decision, only one set of players, not having those moments when a football play can be good AND bad for you at the same time, I'm loving it.

1 Keeper

1 Dynasty

1 Redraft

I find myself only really caring about my redraft league as that is the one with buddies I've known for 15 years and we are all pretty into it.

However the dynasty league is an IDP league so that's peaked my interest this year.

Depends on how many leagues you can pull the same draft strat. I've played 3, all with 'almost' the same players with no issues. I played 2 leagues with totally different players on both and it felt like more work than when I had 3.

I'm in 5 dynos and 3 redrafts. I plan on dropping all my redrafts next year and adding one more dyno. I have one league that is a high drama league amongst coworkers This one takes up a ton of time.

My second or third year playing FF I was in a lot of leagues. I guess I had gotten the basics down and felt that adding leagues was the next step. That novelty wore off quickly. I usually play in 2 or 3 now, and only really focus on 1 or 2. I think I'd be happy with just 1 league most seasons, but it's nice to have a second in case things go downhill in league #1.

I just don't see the point after like 3. You end up rooting for and against so many players it becomes stupid.

Maybe a redraft, keeper, and dynasty just to touch all the bases of the types of leagues, and that should be the max.

I think this is actually the midpoint. If you only have one league, it's very clear who to root for and against. With a half-dozen leagues, it becomes "stupid." But if you truly go over the top with 10+ leagues, you can actually just sit back and watch the games, because it would be pointless to root for but against one player here but not there, etc.

Played in 5 the past 2 years, which hasn't been too many.

I think the key is limiting mine to 3 money leagues and keeping the buyins low ($20-60) so it's not crazy gambling for me.

I agree with this. I've averaged 6-12 lgs for the past 8 yrs or so, juggling high stress job, wife and 2 girls playing sports. Lots of waiver work late night and early am.The biggest problems are with waivers if all the deadlines hit the same time but gameday has never bothered me too much. I just sit back and enjoy the games and cheer my fav players. After halftime of 1pm games I might look at hth scores but then again I might not until later in the afternoon. I aim to win 60% of my games, and make 60% all-play record and make 70%+ playoffs. With some luck that will get me in 4-5 finals each year and win 2-3 leagues.I love fantasy sports and especially NFL. 2011 I'm down for 12 lgs with much more emphasis on auctions (8). If not for auctions I would have likely only played 8 this year.Having a system for tracking free agents and your teams is critical when you manage 5+ teams.I try and only play in MFL.com leagues as I'm most familiar with their site.

I do more "complicated" leagues, for lack of a better term (IDP/Keeper/contracts, etc.), and am up to 5. It's too much. Cutting down to the three money leagues that are serious and that's it. I am busy, but not as busy as some, and I am just not enjoying maintaining so many leagues.

But I agree, it depends on the person.

Opposite end of the spectrum here. Been in multiple leagues a few years. I'm in one, now--the one that got me started. Don't even have time to watch the games other than a couple weeks/year when I stop by friends/opponents to watch--frequently after the season is over. Passionate about keeping up but things just don't work for me the way they used to. Usually get down to Charlotte for one live game/year.

This league keeps me in touch. Good friends, good times, a couple parties each year....wouldn't trade it for anything. :banned:

One of the draws of fantasy football is rooting for a select group of elite players over the course of the season. Drafting Stafford and Calvin in one league got me rooting for the Lions this year and probably for a couple years to come.

Being in more than 3 leagues would make this impossible for me, I'd be going against guys that were on my team in other leagues, it would ruin the experience.

Money comes to mind Agree that the more leagues you add the more conflict of interest you have among your players. That may take the fun out of it for some but on the plus side you get less emotionally attached to any specific player, which can help you make better decisions

You know you're in too many leagues when a player scores and you sit there for several seconds calculating whether or not you're happy or sad it happened.

Played in six this year one more than planned. 4 dyn. I find six makes it easier to watch the games. I don't worry about one player or even one game

Will move to 5 dyn going forward. Since starting to play dyn. I have sucked in redrafts

It's not like rooting for a player is gonna make them play any different. Play in as many as you want and then just sit back and watch the games. Also, smartphones make it much easier to manage multiple leagues.

SO true. You feel like an idiot when you have an armada of leagues going and you DONT win any of them.

For me, one league is impossible because you live or die with that one team. Two or three seems ideal.

So freaking true.
On that first San Fran Drive last night, I was going against a guy who had Akers, so when they had 1st and goal from the 2, I was all happy they would score a TD. Couldn't care any less about the 49ers, but it would have meant Akers only got 1 point rather than 3. When they got backed up and he kicked a FG, it was actually a momentous occasion for me.....5 pay leagues this year, I think 10 total? Definitely too many for me. Cutting back to 3 pay leagues next season, MAYBE adding 1 more to bring it back up to 4 (really don't like 2 of my pay leagues). All dynasty.

Thanks for all of the comments....they provide some interesting insight on the thought process behind people playing in a bunch of leagues.

Not for nothing but in my opinion, any grown man playing in more the 3 leagues has an addiction or a void in their life they are trying to fill with gambling.

Merry Festivus!

I had 7 leagues this year. I made Super Bowl's in 3 of them

I say every year I want to scale back to 3-4 ..... it just never happens
