How many points does an average NFL team score weekly? (1 Viewer)

Thinking about adding a "points against" component to our defensive scoring. Setting the zero-point of that scale on the average number of points that a given NFL team scores on a given week seems reasonable (hold teams under that point = + points for your defense, let teams go over that point = - points for your defense).

Question: Where do you find that information? How many points does the average NFL team score in a week? Anybody have a link to this info? TIA.

I would think you you could look at the paper and figure it out pretty quickly. If I had to guess, I'd say 17 points is an average.

Just take last years "Points For" for each team and divide by 16. This will give you the average score for each team. Then if you want you can add up all 32 teams' average and divide by 32 to get the league average.

I thought about that, but then n = 1 (2005). Just was wondering if anybody knew of a site that had a running total for a few years. . .

p.s. - keep in mind that the league has been trying to get scoring to go up for the last 15-20 years or so.
