How often do you change your hairstyle? (9 Viewers)

I'm getting sick of my hairstyle. Simple, tight buzz on the sides and back and my hair just flops to the right.

I always think I want something new but just keep reverting to my basics. Mainly b/c I hate when you leave the chair looking spiffy, but then when you try and duplicate it at home, its 3 hours, 2 blow driers and 4 different bottles of product.

Now that I've gone fully-gray, I tend to stick with super-short so it kinda-sorta looks like super-light blonde. 0.5 on the sides/back and faded up to a 5 on the top.

I try to change it up every day by adding about a half of a millimeter to each follicle.

ETA: Let's just say if I wanted to increase my Wilks score, I could probably shave my head and face for an extra 20.

Male patter baldness to what ? I keep what little I have tight at a 1. Change it up with beard and goatee. I don't for one second gets upset at going bald. Low maintenance.

ETA ... I am the only bald person in my family for many generations. Convinced it's because I was a trial patient for acutane in my teens. The dosages were way higher than what they give now.

I change the facial hair "style" more than I do with what I am blessed to still have up top. Right now I've been going with "stubble" on the beard but letting the mustache grow longer/fuller. And because I don't want to look like Santa, I try to keep the 'stache colored with that awesome Just For Men shampoo-in gradual color stuff. :bag:

Never. Went to a #1 buzz cut 30? Years ago. I will never have anything else. Correction. During Covid I grew my hair and beard out to comical lengths. Immediately back to a #1 all the way around when I went back to work.

Same for me, except I'm a #3. Started giving myself a buzz cut while playing baseball in high school. Zero maintenance, no bedhead in the mornings, cooler, etc. When I got to college one of my very good friends (girl) asked me to try a #2 or #3 because she said "you don't have the right shaped head to pull off #1". We experimented one day and she convinced me #3 looked the best. 20 years later I'm still doing it. Haven't paid for one single haircut in 24 years. This time of the year when it's brutal hot outside I pull out the clippers every two weeks.

It's like a cruel joke I've accepted. The hair has fallen off my head and seeded itself on my shoulders, ears, nose. Easy enough to trim, but c'mon.
I'm fortunate to still have 95% of mine, but yeah what's going on with the nose and ear hair? I yanked a 2" hair off my earlobe on my drive into work today. wtf
Yes, even the lucky among us have to deal with new strange but true occurrences. What does inspire a hair follicle to suddenly take up residence on a previously empty spot?

"its 3 hours, 2 blow driers and 4 different bottles of product"
Cannot imagine any of these

I turn 55 on Friday and have basically had three styles during my lifetime...
0-18: Mop/Fro
18-35: Short/Medium Cut
35-55: Very short buzz cut

No extensive maintenance, blow driers or product involved in any of them

  • mid-60s crew cut/flat top
  • late-60s to 1974ish mop top (early Beatles)
  • mid-70s to 1983 shoulder length middle part. Sometimes grew it out long & sometimes got a perm.
  • 1983-89 military
  • 1989-1993 short n spikey
  • 1994-2015 medium length side part business executive (pretty boring tbh)
  • 2016-2020 #2 shaved one side, long on other side, opposite side part fm before
  • Covid lockdown to present - man buns & ponytails - long, longer and longest. Last cut was….fall 2023? Or maybe 2022, not sure. Even in a ponytail (most days) it’s halfway down my back. Starting turning grey around 10 years ago and now it’s sort of platinum / silver (I often get compliments on the color.)
Have had some great stylists over the years since moving to NYC in 1999. The salon I used to frequent won industry awards (generous friend used to charge me $75, her normal rate was like $400.)

They all moved to Chicago & L.A. so I just stopped getting haircuts because I haven’t found anyone I trusted.

0-7: bowl cut from mom

8-13: full, luxurious, flowing, feathered back golden locks (think Johnny from Karate Kid)

14-35(ish): high and tight, aka the basketball cut, side part when it grew out a bit

35(ish)-present: tight fade, spiky on top, try to ignore balding areas

I let it get pretty long and shaggy during the winter every year but always get sick of it by springtime and get a short cut when the weather gets warm or when my wife starts making comments, whichever comes first.
