How should I punish my son for bullying? (1 Viewer)

EDIT: Son is 6th grader and is 11 years old.

So, today I get an email from teacher that my son will be spending 2 hours in detention for basically being mean to another student. I wait until my son arrives home from school to get the story. (I know I am only going to get a one sided story from my son as to protect himself.)

Me: I got an email from your teacher today about a detention.

Son: Yeah, Eli told on me for what I said to him.

Me: What did you say?

Son: Dad we play this game called "roast" where we make fun of each other before class in the cafeteria.

Me: Go on.

Son: Well Eli is part Japanese and I said, "I bet your Dad was one of the guys who bombed Pearl Harbor!"

Me: What? That isn't even funny.

Son: Well we play everyday and Eli has said some pretty bad stuff in the past, and I didn't tell on him. Also, Eli is only like 10% Japanese so it shouldn't have offended him that much.

Me: WTF!:!!:"

Son: Dad he doesn't even practice the Japanese heritage.

Me: #(**)#*)@*#) does he have to carry a ####### Samari sword?

Son: Dad he is Christian ... I don't understand why everyone is so mad.

Punishment: GO!

It's a roast. You're not supposed to hold back. The other kid should be punished for being a ####### whiner. Increase your son's allowance or something.

The other kid's dad probably wasn't even born by 1941. Yet another reason the kid shouldn't have gotten so upset over the comment.

Make him watch the movie Pearl Harbor...he won't learn anything from watching it but it will be punishment enough for what he said.

Yeah....that's not bullying. Not even close.

Eli is a wuss and a rat. HTH.

So these kids play a game everyday about making fun of each other? Is the teacher aware this has been going on? You should bring this up to the teacher and ask why & how they have allowed this "bully culture" to exist? Throw it back at them.

Make sure you say that your kid claims the Chinese kid made fun of him as well, but you didn't raise your kid to be a snitch.

We used to run around the playground sockin each other in the nads. We got in trouble for that too.

Punishment for bullying: none.

Punishment for making a un-funny joke: Make him apologize to Eli with the following, "I'm sorry for what I said to you yesterday, Eli. It wasn't funny at all and I really didn't think it through. I haven't seen a bomb that big since Nagasaki" Then have him mime dropping a mike and yell "Roasted" at the top of his lungs.

Who is Mike?

I'm not following this story

I think you are over reacting a bit. He made an unfunny joke (unless he's in Elementary school, then it's semi-funny). It wasn't as if kids were gathered around picking on the Asian kid. They all participate and one kids feelings got hurt. Tell him no more roasting and move on.

Your best fatherly advice to your son should be to make sure Eli isn't invited to play the game. Problem solved. No punishment necessary.
