Watching some MLB postseason action the other day got me thinking how similair a batting order is structured compared to a fantasy football lineup. Below is my take on how to build yourself a winning lineup that has a legitmate shot to win you a title. Not just get you into the playoffs and be one and done. Do with it what you want.
1. Best on-base percentage batter. **This is the guy that will consistently get you the most points week in and week out. To me, a top notch QB is the perfect leadoff hitter. He sets the tone for the rest of your lineup.
(QB=Vick, Brady, Stafford, Rivers)
2. Great at moving the lead off runner over and turning the order over to the 3rd batter and cleanup hitter. **These guys will have some big weeks but they will also have some dud weeks. However, in the end they are solid when taken over a full season. (RB/WR=Benson, Gore, Marshall, Stevie)
3. Best overall hitter. **This will probably be your first or second round draft pick. Someone that can be counted on almost every week and usually does not let you down. (RB/WR=Peterson. McCoy, Calvin, Welker)
4. Best power hitter. **I would equate the cleanup "power hitter" to the boom or bust type players that can single-handedly win you weeks but also lose you weeks when they don't come through. Every championship team needs these types of guys. (RB/WR=Best,D.Jax,Austin,F.Jones)
5. Second best power hitter. **This is a guy that maybe you got later in the draft but has been putting up some big games of late and you ride while they are hot. (RB/WR/TE=Mathews,AJ Green,Gronkowski)
6. A lead off type hitter that can get on base often. **In this spot, you are looking for someone that is consistent week to week, but never really blows or busts. (RB/WR/TE=S.Moss,A.Hernandez,BJGE)
7. A number 2 type of hitter that can keep the order moving. **I would align this with your flex spot. This is usually a spot where you often have to take a moderate risk. I look for a guy that will 100% score me SOME points, but also has a chance (however small) to overperform. (FLEX=Jacobs,Pettigrew,McGahee)
8. Typically one of your weakest hitters. (Insert defense here)
9. Traditionally has been the weakest batter in the batting order. (Insert kicker here)
When it's all said and done, you need to try to WIN every single week and don't just try to NOT LOSE. I see guys all the time that set lineups with plodders and consistently average players instead of taking chances and inserting some game changers and power hitters into their lineup. What would you rather have...two average guys that get you 12 points each or one power hitter that gets you 2 points and one power hitter that gets you 22 points?
