Hybrid hot water heater (1 Viewer)

Anyone have any experience with one? My electric water heater may be on it's way out, what's the shark move in replacing it? I don't think tankless is quite yet the way to go- especially when attempting to get one to heat up water fast enough for a tub situation as opposed to shower. Basic electric heaters are cheap, but the annual energy costs are still quite high (same can be said of gas, and I'd have to run a vent line for one).

Any real world experience would be very much appreciated.

i would rethink tankless.........i have a rinnai and it takes roughly 10-15 seconds to get up to temperature. its not that big a deal when filling a tub or showering. turn on faucet, take off clothes and water is hot. mine is in my crawlspace. it saves room and not having 275 gallons of water in my garage or attic waiting to destroy my home is worth the little wait. extremely efficient. i think they make one where there is actually a reserve tank circulating hot water to offset your concern. my old boss mentioned he had that system, but it seems not to be desperately needed.

Is your rinnai gas or electric? I don't see much savings if going the tankless electric route.

gas - big difference.

i just bought a new conventional heater when mine went out 2 years ago. depending on the age of the one you have, a newer one is probably much more efficient and will lower your bill.

Just an FYI, there are new government mandates right now regarding water heaters. As of April 16th, all new water heaters have to have a higher efficiency rating. For tank water heaters, this means adding insulation to them, and consequently they are increasing in physical size. In some instances, the costs of new water heaters may go up a few hundred dollars or more. Plus, based on physical size, you may need modifications done if you have a water heater in a utility room, or if you have a shorter basement, or in a closet.

If you are replacing one, I would highly recommend doing it before April 15th.
