That’s an awesome arrival! I was assigned toMcMurdo (research) for three months in 1990. We flew in from Christchurch on C130 that had modified landing gear. I understand flights out of JBLM land at McMurdo now.

When I was at McMurdo, one of the research projects was boring into the ice shelf. They used to bring up chunks of ice and claimed it was from when Christ walked the Earth. I never saw any of the scientists use any of the ice to chill their drinks (not if that was necessary), but a lot of the active duty took the challenge. I guess I was a little afraid of viruses and parasites.

I can't even imagine how that felt for you to stand at the spot and look around.

I am in wonder when I go outside at night here at my house and can witness total darkness and quiet. And then look at the stars and northern lights.

What you are experiencing I can't even fathom. Very cool you get to be there.

Oh yes. We’ve been very close to that. They’ve said 40 percent of the elephant seals have been lost.
They are really serious about not touching the ground, not touching the animals, and making sure we really clean our boots after being on land.
It’s a bit of a process, but all good - whatever it takes

i took swimming lessons back in 2017 when I returned from Cuba
At that time i could make it to from end of the pool to the other. Doubt that i could do that now but I could swim enough for the polar dip

Those little dudes are awesome! But the guides are VERY strict about getting too close to them.

It is really incredible how they have absolutely no fear of humans. It’s like we aren’t even there.

That reminded me of this joke:

That’s awesome. I’m glad you were able to experience it and had a great time doing so.

I have worked in the travel industry my entire life and despite going to many places and seeing many things, this is a trip that I still need to take at some point. Of course I have about 30-40 others that I have on that list also.
