Last Thursday we ordered the gold one for my youngest (older boy has one that he uses at college) for his birthday (12/8) $288. Will arrive sometime next week.
In my younger days, I would have been all over this. Tried it the other day, and not so much. 10 feet maybe. Wife took a spill, luckily she was close to the yard, and landed "softly".

Mine is supposed to be delivered Dec. 22, but at this point the risk of fire/explosion is too much to give it to my kid.

I have already been in contact with Amazon about returning the second I get them. Not going super smooth, but I think I will be able to get all my money back

part of how I chose the one I bought was due to it being a seller with a lot of positive reviews...since I bought it, the name of the seller has changed to some Chinese company with no feedback at all.
contacted amazon and demanded a refund based on that and the fact that I can't give an exploding skateboard to my kid as a present.

just talked to amazon rep...they say they've never seen something like this where a seller was listed and then somehow the order went to a chinese company with no feedback...based on that alone they're refunding my money and most likely booting the seller from amazon.
I guess I get to keep the explodaboard when it arrives.

that isn't entirely the case. there are some brands that are actually built with quality control and the proper batteries. the rest are Chinese clones...I agree that the clones are all basically the same. there were some review sites that told people that you had to pay over $300 to ensure that you were getting a real one...the chinese knockoff resellers just raised their prices.

Not true, they are all the exact same guts. The only difference is that some have a Samsung battery that is supposed to be safer.

Isn't that what I just said? The actual ones that are being manufactured for US/UK companies have the proper batteries. the knockoffs have low grade lithium ion batteries that tend to catch on fire. It's the batteries and charging system that are the problem.

Anyone have anything factual here? From what I have read, there are 11 reported cases of fire. Out of how many sold? Laptops have similar batteries and fire hazards if they're not ventilated properly or placed on a bedspread or something, right? Is this like an ebola overreaction where a handful of lemons have sparked widespread panic?

You probably "need" a laptop in some fashion. Work, school, whatever. These are just a gimmicky way of avoiding exercise. Not quite the same.

I think we are going to return ours for a refund. Just too much risk for a toy, IMO. Beiber getting burned by one before Christmas was the final straw for my daughter
