I miss Calvin and Hobbes (1 Viewer)

Never understood the appeal of this, but I know that tons of guys on this board love C&H.

Do you love it because you find it cute or because you find it funny?

Not cute. Captivating, beguiling, riveting, entrancing, amusing, bemusing, fascinating, diverting, entertaining, bewitching, risible, perhaps. But not cute.

Love C&H. Unfortunately during science discussions here I often feel like I am talking to people who got their science education strictly from his dad.

Always thought I was blessed growing up (and passed growing up!) being around 3 of the best cartoon strips ever written...Calvin and Hobbes, Bloom County, and Far Side!

There just isn't much that comes close to what those guys were able to put down on paper.

Non Sequitor and Fox Trot come close but are a step down, and Dilbert is in a class by itself!

Just curious, do you not like comics at all, or just C&H? What comic do you find funny?
The only times I'll usually read the comics is with the Sunday paper, or if I stumble upon one in a magazine or something. To tell you the truth, Dilbert and Far Side are really the only ones that I can think of that have ever really made me laugh.

Seriously really do miss this strip.
Best strip ever, I think know I teared up when the last one came out and every time I have read it since. Haven't found one to fill the gap even remotely since although I gave Boondocks a long run.My brother has the complete boxed set, just plain awesome. I read them every time I am home and wish for the days when summer meant something special.

Interesting.... I get the Sunday paper and don't care for most of the comics. The punch lines are just so predictable or flat out lame. A few are okay, and some individual strips are funny, but mostly they aren't very good, imo.The three comics that I love are/were C&H, Dilbert, and The Far Side. All three are original and imaginative, not really following the formula that most comics seem to follow.

"Let's go exploring."Still one of the best exit lines ever.

The real last stripI miss C&H.

Too bad the dude that wrote C&H was such an ###.He basically quite over marketing rights.
I don't think so.
Yes, but not in the way Giganto puts it. He was very must interested in his artistic integrity, and didn't want his characters to become commercial vehicles. So when Universal, who owned the rights (for which he collected royalties), began to make C&H into Snoopy kind of sales prostitutes, he quit. Entirely within his rights to do so. He cared more about his artistic integrity than the money.

Very sad. I knew someone would link it.

I don't blame him for doing what he thought was right but this is one very odd dude if all the stuff I've seen written about him over the years is true. Very reclusive. And not so easy to get along with.

Is that a real strip from Watterson?

I am a huge fan of C&H and can see Watterson's point of view regarding the commercialization of his art. The stickers of Calvin pee'ing on the ford/chevy/dodge symbols angers me, or the t-shirts with C&H with a bong. Blatant rip-offs that really shouldn't have been done. That said...the strip I linked to cracks me up :lmao:

As far as I know. I believe someone here even linked some commentary he had on it last time we did a C&H thread.

Jesus I've never seen that before.I feel like crying.

Calvin's on pills?

I'd love to see that commentary. I've been poking around and all the discussion I've found about that strip suggests it's fake. I hope it is fake because it's very sad and shows a very jaded Watterson if it's real.

Yeah I never really checked it out but on further review it seems that's a fake. It's from an article done in the Post by Frank Ahrens. It was done before the last strip and after Watterson annouced he was ending it. It was a speculative ending.

I always liked the ones where he pretends his dad needs to run for re-election. "The polls don't look good, you need to think about moving bedtime back."

Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes are in a class by themselves. Really loved those strips tremendously. Never got into Bloom County, but I can see the appeal a little bit. Dilbert is one I never understood and have never thought was remotely funny. Is it still being written?

Well if we are going 3 I would have to go in no particular order Bloom County, Calvin and Hobbes, and Far Side. I like others a lot(Donnesbury) but these three were all good for consistent laughs.

Love Calvin and Hobbes and The Far side is by far the greatest comic of all time I'd say.Gotta check out Bloom County, not sure I've read it.

Well as you can tell by my avatar I may be biased but it is one of my all time favorites. Thought provoking and funny IMO.

Those would be my three favorites, in order.Of course I might be a little biased too.
