I miss Ivan Karamazov (1 Viewer)

@IvanKaramazov hasn’t returned since the new format started. And I really miss his posts. He and I did not see eye to eye on most issues, particularly abortion and anything to do with woke and culture, but he has always been one of the most thoughtful people here and his posts were always a pleasure to read even when I strongly disagreed.

Please come back Ivan; I’m sure I’m not the only one who misses you.

Here here. I call him King Ivan, because he's the King of the Forums. Just his presence in here calms things down - me included. :P

My guess is he's on hiatus until the football season starts.

I believe this is untrue. I've seen posts from him in the FFA. I just looked at his account and recent posting history and it confirms he is still posting. He is just not posting in THIS specific forum. His posting frequency in the PSF has been tailing off for quite a while. I have my own theory as to why but I won't get in to that, but I don't think it's because of the board change. And I miss him as well. He is one of the more thoughtful posters here.

What a shame. :coffee:

It is a shame when posters like Ivan, SID, Henry and yes GG quit posting. While I don't agree with all that was posted by them. They were always for the most part intelligent and thought provoking. Not the I'm right and your wrong type post that are so prevalent here.
Three of the best posters on this board, and the worst poster.
Henry was bad but wouldn't consider him the worst

Well that's my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

Yes I miss SID and Henry as well. I respectfully strongly disagree with you about GG, but I’ve made my thoughts on him pretty clear in the past so there’s no need to rehash that.

Monkeys using rocks in creative ways

The quotes from the scientists are really what make this story so great.
In other words, the monkeys appear to engage in “a form of self-directed, tool-assisted masturbation,” said Camilla Cenni, a doctoral student at the University of Lethbridge in Canada, who conducted the research as part of her dissertation.
The macaque study is not the first report of object-assisted masturbation in wild animals, but it provides new evidence that, in some cases at least, animals appear to use tools simply to give themselves pleasure. “It’s arguably not really adaptive or useful,” Ms. Cenni said.

“It’s some sort of playful manipulation, in which there doesn’t seem to be an apparent function,” Ms. Cenni said.

To systematically investigate the hypothesis, Ms. Cenni and her colleagues analyzed the stone-handling actions of 173 monkeys. They found that young males engaged in the genital tapping and rubbing more than adult males did, and were especially likely to engage it in during sexually charged situations, such as when they or another macaque nearby was soliciting a mate or showing signs of sexual arousal.

“The data are very convincing,” said Elisabetta Visalberghi, an expert on primate cognition at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies at Italy’s National Research Council, who was not involved in the research. “What they found is that, indeed, there was something sexual going on.” (Like any good scientist, she made sure to add the proper caveats. “The pleasure of masturbation is very hard to assess,” she noted.)

Still, she noted, the idea that this particular pursuit might cause pain as well as pleasure could not be ruled out without further testing.

“There might be a transformational effect from play to tool use,” Ms. Cenni said.

Maybe it’s a perk of leisure, Dr. Visalberghi said: “When you have free time, and you find a way of using the stones for a given purpose, why not?”

I am guessing a few posters took mental inventory during the week break. I know I am here a ton less, as I realized how much calmer I was during that week.
Yeah, we'd all be wise to follow suit. Much better, less stressful things could be done with our time.

I have said, the new board and it's ignore function is far superior, but the combo of the week break and the fact that a great portion of the conversations still revolve around those highly ignorable posters really opens the eyes about this place.

Basically, it's become the exact thing I try to avoid on SM and why I am not on those platforms.

BRB. Going to get me some rocks....for scientific research, of course.

UPDATE: DO NOT....DO NOT USE ROCKS FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH!!!!!

Yah he was one of the few reasons I visit this board, crazy smart and eloquent. Before the switch I was thinking to myself I don’t think he can keep writing so coherently in a forum like this and keep his sanity.

I think he chose sanity.
He’s a great one along with GG. There are still a couple great non MSNBC replay reads like @Sand and @NorvilleBarnes and @BladeRunner among you and others but the majority is the same tired 100% regurgitation of Lib talking points to sift through.

So the posters you appreciate the most is entirely based on how much they agree with you already? So boring.

Of course, which makes the "echo chamber" shtick that much funnier.

That there are only a handful of posters that don’t sound like MSNBC on repeat? Uh……yeah whatever you want to believe I guess. 😂

Sorry, the liberal echoers don’t interest me. That :deadhorse: has been beaten for years and then some. Nothing interesting about it and I’m sure has driven many away. Just my opinion, but hard pass.

Ivan was always a great read but can clearly see why he lost interest.

Maybe the other two, but he chose me for my good looks and charming personality.

Obviously, along with your keen financial sense.

@Shula-holic another great one.

Also, Ivan for POTUS!

Other than King Ivan and BR, my favorite posters in here are all Liberals: @timschochet @KarmaPolice @dkp993 @ignatiusjreilly @General Malaise
Thanks bro, right back at ya. But I’m not a liberal. Fiscal conservative, social liberal (though that’s probably not true anymore either as other then abortion the ”normal” right has moved this way). I hate todays soft wokeness left.

Aka "FBG independent". Lib apologist pretending to be independent? ;)

One of these days I'll figure out what a limousine liberal is, and how in the world it applies to hardly any people.

It was originally used to describe Leonard Bernstein who hosted chic cocktail parties in Manhattan with black radicals like Eldridge Cleaver lecturing a bunch of adoring white millionaires. I think it was Tom Wolfe who coined the term.

There are still quite a few quality posters here posting. There are two from my state who I don't think I have ever agreed with on anything . I still look forward to reading their thoughts on things. One is just a couple towns over I'd have a beer with anytime. Both of them can get a little high falootin at times but it's usually during a emotional discussion.

That's the problem with some of us we all just get a little too emotional at times just need to tone it down a little.

Then of course some people are just tools they can't help themselves.

Back atcha, GB. It occurs to me that I don't really engage much with a lot of the most prolific liberal posters on here like Tim, @sho nuff or @squistion. Not because I have anything against them; it's for the same reason I don't generally watch Rachel Maddow. Despite what some of the more lachrymose posters in here may believe, I don't find it interesting to be part of a liberal echo chamber where I only talk to people I agree with. I much prefer talking to a) people who can disagree with me in intelligent ways that force me to rethink my own positions, like you and Ivan; and b) people who can help explain things to me that I don't fully understand. I've learned so much about politics in my state (along with other topics like home insurance and spiny lobsters) from @The Commish, @rustycolts @JoeMammy @NorvilleBarnes @Osaurus and @SoBeDad

It’s funny that so many people here regard me as a liberal. I’m certainly a Democrat but until pretty recently I was a Republican. I voted for Mitt Romney in 2012 and in 2008 I was John McCain’s biggest supporter until his VP choice, after which I abstained.
I don’t think I’ve changed very much. I’ve been a centrist on economic issues and pretty liberal on social issues, and libertarian on the big issues (for me) like free trade and immigration. Ayn Rand remains my biggest influence in that she taught me the inherent goodness of capitalism, which is why I can never accept the socialism of a Bernie Sanders or or AOC. The Republicans moved away from me.

I think it's similar to what I've said before- it feels like a large portion of the threads and heated debates are social issues, which I lean left on. I get how that would come across as being hard liberal, even if it doesn't reflect reality or my voting record.

At the end of the day people will believe what they want, no skin off my sack.

As a progressive/liberal here, I don't and I never have. You hold some liberal or progressive positions but overall, that does not make you a liberal.

Not to piss in anyone's cheerios, but IK had adopted an angrier and more confrontational style in the last 6 months. He also engaged in gloating and demeaning others more than I had seen over the 10+ years I've been on the forums.

IK is a super bright guy, intelligent writer, and challenges my personal viewpoints in a good way. But engaging with him had changed over the last 6 months and became less enjoyable for me.

Maybe my observations are totally of base here, I dunno. Obviously I'm not sure why he's not posting in the PSF anymore but perhaps this comes on the heels of the changes I noted above. I do wish him to return as he's a great poster and I appreciate his commentary.

I could be projecting here, but as @KarmaPolice mentioned, the time off forced some of us to realize how much stress the frustration of today's politics is causing. For most of 2021 I had stepped away from politics and found myself in a much more relaxed place. The Ukraine invasion brought me back to the PSF which I don't think was a good thing for me or the board. Some of you may have the ability to have positive, productive conversations in here, and I envy that, but I think for most this place is probably a net negative in our lives. My hunch is that people like Ivan and Gordon recognized that and they're using their time for better things. Of course, this could just be projection and most of you are able to operate in a different headspace with politics than I am.

No, IK was just fine. He just started challenging the liberal playbook more often with Trump out of office and many of you guys don't like that. IK is probably the best poster in the PSF
