I Need a Replacement for Coffee in the Morning (1 Viewer)

I know a bunch of others suggested Iced Coffee...it really was a wonderful alternative for me.

I didnt start drinking coffee until my 30's. After 4-6 months of normal daily hot coffee drinking I started getting all kinds of stomach problems. I'd quit for a while...then repeat the same pattern. Then I tried Red Bulls and Monsters and Rockstars for that morning jolt, but those made my heart go wonky. I went back to hot coffee. Surprise after a few months...acid stomach.

Then I found Iced Coffee. I've been drinking it every day for over 5 years straight now. No stomach problems. Starbucks makes an unsweetened bowling pin shaped bottle for 5 bucks. Usually lasts me a week as I only have one in the morning. Id try that before I started trying to make my own coffee.

you could make a fancy deconstructed cup of cofffee that is where you look at a coffee bean and drink some water it is very la tee da and you would probably feel all frenchified take that to the bank brochacho

after going for a laryngoscopy, doc thinks I may still have a bit of thrush.  he recommended kombucha or a probiotic drink.  the only thing I can stomach right now is something called Kevita.

Kevita is a brand of kombucha. Kombucha is great but you can over do it with that as well.

Have you considered eliminating grains and refined sugar from your diet? That as well as limited dairy could solve all of your problems.

ETA: going off of grains sucks for the first week or so, after that you'll feel better than you have in years.

It's a great supplement to your diet.  Gives you a ton of greens and a nice boost in the morning.  I just mix mine with water.  It tastes similar to a shot of wheatgrass which isn't the most pleasant but you get used to it.  I've taken much worse shots of booze over the years so this is cake.

On another note, not sure what your exercise regime is but you'll be amazed at how much more energy you have if you start working out.
thanks @Major do you mainly recommend the Grass you linked, or are others pretty similar? I see Amazon has a bunch of products.

My exercise level is up and down. I was big into Crossfit and still have a membership but I had knee surgery last november and that knocked me off my game for a while (both before and after). I also play ice hockey at least 1-2x per week as well las referee ice hockey but we are out of the season now. MY biggest problem is my side gig. I often work late into the night and many times when i plan on hitting the gym, a client will call with a project and I will bounce to that and pass on the gym. So getting a constant work out routine is difficult. Plus, now w/o coffee, its getting harder to put in the real late hours on projects.

Appreciate the input.

I have your answer.  I had ulcers at 14 y/o, and Barrets in my 20's.  I take all the meds and still had issues with acid....until a year ago.

COLD BREW COFFEE! was my miracle.  If you get the coffee from Eithopia its even better, but not heating the beans is the key to the acid problem.

The best part is you can buy a maker at Target for like 20 bucks and make your own.  I can't remember the exact number, but we were spending $3-400 a month at Dunks and the Bucks.  Now we spend like $25 a month.

Do this and thank me later.
You serious? Not judging but well, yea I guess I am. Holy ####### ####

Yeah, the Amazing Grass brand is one I trust and been using for years.  You can find their products in Whole Foods and other stores but the Amazon Price normally can't be beat.  They also have an Energy variety that you may want to try.  I can't speak on it but it adds Matcha and other tea extracts to the mix.

On the opposite end of the spectrum are smart drugs/nootropics.  Modafinil seems to be all the rage for energy/focus but sounds too good to be true so I passed.

How in the world is it possible to spend 400 at coffee shops - that is roughly 115 coffees (avg - $3.50 per) or 4 coffees per day, every day....even if you cut that in half for two people that is a lot of coffee for someone that has ulcer problems.
My Barrets is gone now too.  Cold brew!

This turned out to be a very informative thread.   I'm going to try some of these suggestions, although I'm not giving up hot coffee.   Thanks everyone.

This is also quite delicious, but I'd recommend Teisseire brand strawberry syrup instead. (Along with their other syrups -- grenadine, etc. -- if sugary syrups are your thing.)

Speaking of apple cider vinegar... I've been taking a spoonful in the morning and evening. It was awful at first but it's getting better now that I try to not let it touch my tongue before swallowing and immediately drinking water afterwards.
They say to take it with food, boy does it help digestion... a little too well... if you know what I mean.

You can heat cold brewed coffee. I cold brew a concentrate. 1/3 concentrate 2/3 boiling = nice hot low acid smooth rich cup. Tipsy used to do this in his restaurant (probably still does) and recommended the Toddy.

One of the things I'm going to try.

also going to try several of the healthy smoothie type drinks - I like them when it's not cold and rainy, which is about half the year here in seattle.

Dandy blend

I was coming in here to post this. It's super cheap per serving, too.
Following up on this: http://www.dandyblend.com/

I have not used it as a straight coffee replacement, so I can't really speak to the lack of caffeine withdrawal, but I moved to it to substitute one cup of coffee per day.

Dandelion has a lot of nice health benefits: https://sunwarrior.com/healthhub/11-health-benefits-of-dandelion-leaves-and-dandelion-root

Though I cannot vouch for specifically which ones are addressed by it in this form.

So trying not to hjack Chem's thread, but how do you smoothie guys do it? I guess I don't see how I would have time in the morning. Between getting myself ready, getting two kids out the door and catering to my wife's wondering where she left her car keys, purse, phone etc, I just don't see how someone has time for this unless they get up an hour earlier. Plus the cleanup and whatever is always a pain.

i am interested in the Amazing Grass referenced above. I am 47 and I need some energy. I get the afternoon crash and then when I get home, I am super tired as well.

I don't do it myself, but I saw something on Facebook that was intriguing (I know, first time for everything).  Apparently, mason jars can fit a standard blender.  The idea was to throw fruit, and or whatever else you want in your smoothie other than the dairy, and put it in the freezer.  In the am, take one out, throw in some milk, and blend it up.  The only clean up is the blender blade and the mason jar after you've consumed it, but that is your container for the go.  Make a bunch on Sunday night and you are set for the week.

Making a smoothie never struck me as a time suck and generally my go to when I'm in a rush.   Poor some water or juice in a blender, add fruit, yogurt and protein.  Blend.  Probably takes me 1-2 minutes tops.  It's not like you're prepping Eggs Benedict.

Agreed - the key is to have those ingredients handy when you are trying to make one in a hurry. I can see how if you don't make it all the time, aren't sure of proportions etc, where it might take some time.

local supermarket near me sells or sold a just add liquid smoothie.  it's like a 12oz sealed cup and lid filled with frozen smoothie blend.  i add milk, shake for a bit and wa la!

tea is ok, but just is missing something, I tried hot chocolate, but chocolate is an item I need to avoid.  so I am stumped...............
If you don't like tea at all then it won't matter but there's a big difference between good tea and bad tea. For years my idea of tea was the Lipton tea bags. My thought was always "Meh. Boring." Someone introduced me to good loose tea and the experience was completely different.

Got a loose tea maker and keep a few small tins with loose tea at work and it's supplanted the need to drink coffee all day.

I have the metal steeping ball for loose tea, so this is definitely something I will keep in mind.

alright @Major   got the Super Greens stuff and thought I would be cute and get the "Watermelon flavor" HFS the only way that tastes like watermelon is if it was watermelon that was chewed up, spit out and left to rot in the sun for 6 weeks!! Man that stuff was tough to put down. I'm drinking it straight—mixed in water. But i'm on day 3 and gonna take it regardless. Not sure if I'm feeling a super burst of energy but it fills my gut enough that I almost don't want coffee in the AM.

thanks for the tip.

Been hearing Rogan preach about these forever....do you actually use them?  see a difference?
I've tried the Alpha Brain 3 or 4 years ago. I would say it's similar to a multi vitamin. If you have a horrible diet (which I did from work provided meals), work too much/don't sleep enough and never exercise then you'll notice something. But the closer you get to the other end of the health spectrum, the less you'll likely notice. Expectation of what is going to happen likely will determine whether someone likes Alpha Brain. It's not the pills from Limitless.

Long Answer:

Once I finished the job had me on a fairly unhealthy track, I didn't feel like they were were doing anything for me. A little few months after I stopped I did notice that I wasn't able to concentrate as much. And really it was my one buddy who I was playing chess against (Chess with Friends on phones) who kind of pointed it out. Not about the Alpha Brain but that it was taking me longer to make a move. There's lots of stuff that happens in life so I didn't even consider Alpha Brain (or there of) to be the issue. Then I noticed it was taking me to do a Suduko.

It's not that it makes you smarter or anything. Just a longer period of staying focused on something. Instead of 20 minutes before you lose interest it's 25. Like I said I didn't even notice a difference until I stopped taking it. I'm not sure how much money it is but there could be a cost to benefit issue too.

What is referenced was actually a drink. I am considering going down the Onnit route again soon and will report back if I do.

funny...this is me to a T. I work 2 jobs and will skip the gym when a client calls and needs work done that night. Plus with a touch of undiagnosed ADHD I find myself drifting when working on something boring, which in turn makes me work later and get even less sleep.

thanks for the info

Unsolved Mysteries Update!

thanks for all the advise here...........after having a laryngoscopy (findings were mucus in nasal passages and on vocal chords) and being instructed to go for an endoscopy, I went to my primary physician 10 days ago and he wrote me a script for sungulair and a script for difulcan tablets.  I also swore off coffee fully, ramped up my kevita drink, ditched coffee, caffeine and carbonation and anything else even remotely spicy or acidic.  started drinking cold decaf green tea and a hot decaf tea in the morning.  basically, I am on a chicken, salad, fruit and water based diet for about the last week.........low and behold my symptoms have broken!  for the time since 10/2016 I have not been coughing.  6+ mumfs with a cough had me on the edge.  I am not 100%, but I am real close and getting better.  Only problem now is that I have no idea what of my pill/diet cocktail worked.  I would venture to think the full elimination of coffee and caffeine helped.  By drinking only coffee and carbonated bevs I must have moved my body's PH towards acidic and out of whack.  It is possible the diflucan wiped out any lingering deep thrush I may have had (got thrush 2x during 2016).  this is all such a mystery, but somehow it seems I may have beaten this.  hopefully 3-6 months down the line I can have some items I ditched in moderation, but right now I will take it.

I obviously highly recommend the apple cider vinegar based probiotic drinks; however, watch out for all of them including kombucha, as some may have caffeine from tea and they are lightly carbonated, but not enough to get the coke threlch.

Haha.  I have yet to try the watermelon variety but can't imagine it being very tasty.  I warned you that it's basically like taking a shot of wheatgrass so if you're not used to that it may take some time.  Once you adapt, it's easy  :banned: .

I saw this and ordered the Super Green stuff as well........ it is actually fairly tolerable but it appears to have the side effect of causing unbelievable amounts of flatulence........ anyone else notice this?

I never had a problem but I also drink several protein shakes daily so a little green drink probably won't add any noticeable difference.

Raise the head of your bed 3-4 inches. You can try a low acid coffee. They say the darker the roast the better for your stomach. You'd think it'd be the other way but dark roast  is better. If you go the blender rout, get a Blendtec. Liquefies the fiber. I just drank spinach, beets, carrot, blueberry, pumpkin seeds and banana. Take it easy with the meds, do your research on whatever they prescribe. Those are short term solutions, not to take long term.
This really works, even more so if you have sinus problems or your head sleeps hotter than your feet.

so, back in October 2016 I came down with what was initially diagnosed as a cross between a URI and bronchitis.......after having a chronic cough for 2-3 months and getting nowhere on a solve with my primary doc, I went to a pulminologist.  she diagnosed me wth upper airway cough syndrome brought on by sinuses.  got an inhaler, decongestant (not enough for meth), Benadryl.  felt a bit better for 6 weeks, but decided to see an ENT.  after 3 minutes he diagnosed me with a bad case of acid reflux.  all the symptoms seem to fit, especially the chronic cough, which has now been with me for 6 months.  I need to take meds and alter my diet bigly, including eliminating coffee, which I drink a lot of.  neither the acid nor the caffeine are good for this.  however, I don't drink many things during the day and coffee was my beverage of choice, either hot or iced.  I can cold turkey out of coffee pretty much, but in the morning I am kind of groping around for a beverage.  tea is ok, but just is missing something, I tried hot chocolate, but chocolate is an item I need to avoid.  so I am stumped................

anyone have a good morning beverage, caffeine free they can recommend?  I was thinking a fruit smoothie of some sort, but it seems efforty to blend fruits, honey, ice, clean, rinse repeat.

I am open-ish to ideas and shtick.

also, if anyone has had this malady, I am open to suggestions too.
so, it seems the ENT was correct in diagnosing me with acid reflux.  after taking a 6-9 month cocktail of medications I settled on a Prilosec in the morning and a Xantac in the evening.  cold turkied off of coffee and spicy foods with a bland chicken and rice diet, no more carbonated bevs, went to diet iced tea by lipton.  began to feel better, though had some bad days here and there.  These past 3-5 days have basically been normal for me, 9 months after the issue occurred.  I have weened off of the Xantac and no longer use tums.  I can mix in a decaf every so often.  guess I need to be cognizant of spicy and acidic foods, especially caffeinated bevs.  I won't lie, there were some dark days there when I thought I wouldn't shake this.  so, just a warning out there if you encounter this issue.

thanks for the bev suggestions.......I am going to start a go fund me page and I hope you all donate.

Didn't read the whole thread, but water.

I have to have coffee in the morning, yet I still hate mornings and it takes me an hour + before I feel right.

My husband hates coffee, but he slams a 16 ounce water every morning and he is all chipper and whatever other words you would use to describe a person that is full of energy shortly after he gets up. I hate him in the morning.
