I think my office will shut down soon...***update: shut down confirmed (1 Viewer)

They officially offered me a chance to move to New Jersey. I told them I'd think about it, and I will. I will probably say "Thanks, but no thanks."

They did not offer me an end date or severance package, as their preference was me moving.

The job I interviewed with a couple days ago - I believe an offer is eminent. the HR lady is asking for salary history and references, so that's got to be a good sign.

I've gotta say, it is nice to feel wanted.

The actual job I want - the director of my department is moving to that company effective next Tuesday. He worked there prior, so it was a pretty easy interview for him. He said that they are currently on a hiring freeze for the rest of the year and he just managed to squeeze in. He'll try to bring me on board when things open up.

not 100% sure what I want to do with all of this. I'm gonna get together with some old friends this weekend, get hammered and figure things out.

I think I might move from Charlotte to NJ for $5 million. Maybe.

Where in NJ?
Across the river from Philly.

I have one more play here, and this is interesting to me. I have been involved in a couple of projects lately where I work directly with customers to create custom solutions. I've really enjoyed that, and I think the sales team appreciates my assistance.

I pitched the idea to the head of sales that maybe I could transition into a sales engineer role. As I wouldn't be a design engineer, I really wouldn't need to be in NJ; this is something I could do from home. The way I envision it, I would assist the sales team as they visit customers define what they need, and act as a conduit to the engineering staff (which will probably be in China). He was interested and said this is a role he had requested before, but was turned down. Now that engineering and sales will no longer be co-located (the sales portion of our office was not let go), it will be even tougher for his staff to get feedback to engineering.

This would be a role that I would define myself. He asked me to write up a job description, roles and requirements and all that, and use my recent experiences as a case-study as to why this role is needed.

personally, I think this could be a lot of fun. The way I see it, it would allow me to use my problem-solving abilities without actually being accountable for making my designs work - i.e. all fun, no tedious grunt work. It would be a lot of traveling, which I'm OK with, and a lot of tinkering on solutions at home.

My company is dragging their feet on getting me details on my severance package. They actually expected people to move to NJ, and I think weren't prepared for everyone to say no.

Unrelated: I talked to the VP from the other company I wasn't super thrilled about. He fleshed out the position a little more, and it sounds like exactly what I want to be doing. He gave me a verbal offer that includes a slight bump in salary, a slight cut in bonus (mostly offset with salary bump), and a signing bonus that is roughly 5 weeks of pay. This is the proverbial bird in the hand.

Obviously, I want my cake and I want to eat it too. I'm having trouble figuring out the negotiation phrase here. If I go to my HR and say, "I have an offer to leave now. Can I have my severance sooner than later?", as they are likely to tell me to pound sand.

An ideal compromise is to get new company to give me until, say Jan 1 to start and let the current company lay me off 12/31. Hell, if I could get that to work, I would take half of my severance and fore-go the signing bonus from new company.

I wouldn't plan anything until you have a formal offer in hand. Time of year might work in your favor regarding starting with the new company seeing how Thanksgiving is next week but if you are taking the other job I wouldn't **** around too much with pushing Out a start date if they want you earlier.

Unless you told the new company that you were being 86'd, I wouldn't think they'd expect you to start until early - mid-December anyway since you'd have to give notice at your current gig.

that's right - its not a next week thing. They expect me to start 2 weeks after an agreed offer.

I did tell them of my situation as I wanted them to come back with a signing bonus, and they did, but the bonus is about 1/4 of what my severance would be. Still, it's better than a stick in the eye.

I would think telling them you need until the new year to close out X years worth of work for the previous company wouldn't raise any eyebrows.

Can you "work from home" while your existing company figures things out? I made one mistake at a big company a long time ago. I took a new position and was trying to figure out how to eat my cake by getting laid off. My previous company was a joint venture and got sucked up into the big company. I was one of a handful of people still left. They slowly moved people around and stopped selling our stuff (idiots turned down an almost $billion offer the year before that would have put me into a really nice place right now, i.e. early retirement potential). I made the mistake of putting in my notice. My boss was from my old company and a super nice guy. I could have worked from home every day, almost nothing to do. I could have doubled my salary for a while and then waited to get laid off and got the severance (big company, defined lay off packages).
