Iced coffee (1 Viewer)

I used to like McDonalds Regular Iced Coffee, also like the Iced Mocha from Burger King. But I want to make my own.

Does anyone have any good recipes? I'm guessing there's not much to it, right?

I like regular coffee with a little cream, but Iced, I like with a little flavor.

Cold press is the only way to go. Seriously. It is 1000 times better than iced coffee.
Not sure what this means.
Cold PressCold brewed coffee naturally seems sweeter due to its lower acidity. Because the coffee beans in cold-press coffee never come into contact with heated water, the process of leaching flavor from the beans produces a different chemical profile than conventional brewing methods.

Thanks, just read about something similar. Going to try it.

You can buy a system for like 30 or 40 bucks.Or you can just dump the coarsely ground beans into a big pot/bucket/pail/etc, add the right amount of water, and let it drip out through a coffee filter or cheesecloth after letting it soak for 24 hours

Yea, this is what I just read about. Thanks again. Sounds exactly what I'm looking for.

Vietnamese Ice Coffee (ca phe su da) is by far the best iced coffee there is.
+1 Vietnamese Ice Coffee > anything at Starbucks. This is relatively easy to do at home too. Buy a small press from an Asian market, Vietnamese coffee and some condensed milk. Wait for the waterto finish filtering through the press, mix with condensed milk and pour over ice. Yummy!

Thats what we do. We also use a brand of coffee that contains chicory that we get at the asian store. Its good plus you can make it as sweet as you'd like. I use a fat free condensed milk. I may make one now.

I'm craving one myself.

I made some last week.

1. Brew some Peet's Major Dickason's Blend (available in my local supermarket) the night before using the automatic coffee maker.

2. Add sugar right away while it's piping hot.

3. Let it cool off on the countertop then put the whole glass carafe into the fridge.

4. Serve with ice and milk or half and half the next day.

This is how I make mine in the summer, minus the sugar. I'll make it before bed, throw in the fridge overnight and I have iced coffee in the morning for work.

Just FYI. Making it cold is way better than brewing it hot and throwing it in the cooler.

My Nespresso machine rocks for iced coffee. Either 2-3 brews, milk (2%, skim, almond, whatever) and ice, or 1-2 brews of espresso and a luongo (coffee setting, not just a shot) works better if no water or you don't need to pour over ice to chill.

Why? Just freshness or something else?
Steeping the coffee in room temp water will develop the flavors and be much smoother. Less bitter than hot brewing. I worked at a coffee shop (not bucks). We would make the cold press the afternoon before in a big pitcher. Just cold water and grounds. Put plastic wrap over it. Wrote time/date. Then in the AM we would take a big spoon and skim most of the grinds (they float to top and create a type of crust). Pour the remaining coffee through a gold metal filter and done. We actually made those iced blended frappe type drinks from real cold press too. Iirc Starbucks used a powdered coffee type thing. I could really tell the difference, even with all the dairy and sugar mixed in. Tip: add cinnamon to the grinds whenever you brew either hot coffee, cold press etc. Don't try to stir it in. It doesn't work.

I use Community Coffee with chicory from New Orleans--a lot of people forget we have great chicory coffee here in the US too.

YESAt the office I simply fill a cup with Ice, add 2 packets of splenda then fill with coffee from the pot. Pretty decent substitute to a proper cup. LOVE iced coffee... McDonalds are ##### with the creme... #### looks more like milk than coffee. I order it black with 2 splenda.

Tried this method yesterday after reading this thread and it's perfect. Used Community Coffee New Orleans Blend (Coffee and Chickory). Will end up saving me mucho dinero and it's better than what we normally buy.

I also started a batch after reading this thread and some other sites. Looking forward to trying it this evening. I mixed almost a cup of fresh ground coffee with 4 cups of water in a french press. I'm not sure what water to coffee concentrate to use so I guess I'll start at 1:1 and go from there.

I like regular coffee with a little cream, but Iced, I like with a little flavor.
Me too. Not sure why it has to be so difficult. I just make a pot and drink it hot with a little cream in the morning and then have a glass of it on the rocks with some of my wife's fru-fru creamer in the afternoon.

Regarding cold press/brew, wouldn't that make the coffee a lot weaker? Is the caffeine content lower?

I would think that the hot water would get so much more out of the bean.

Starbuck's Via instant iced coffee is tasty. I usually get Carmel. Pour it in cold water, stir, splash with milk and add ice.

Vinacafe is a great instant version of Vietnamese Coffee, I drink it hot everyday.

Did the cold press Sunday night and have been drinking iced coffee since. It really is fantastic that way. Way less bitter and very smooth and I just used a half pound of Gevalia regular blend. You actually taste coffee and the undertones rather than all that bitterness.

Great suggestion.

I would definitely say it's more expensive than hot brew though. What I have will go a lot quicker than if I hot brewed it. Probably almost half as many cups.

When you use a cold brew machine, how does it work? All I've ever done is steeping over night. Never used a price of equipment for it.

I tapped our maple tree this year to get maple water to make syrup. Remembered an article I read awhile back about using the maple water from the tree to make coffee instead of regular water.

Made a batch of cold press with it.

Delicious!

Love it. However, I haven't been able to enjoy it back in the U.S. since having it in Vietnam. They do something different over there and I can't quite figure it out? Maybe it's the type of beans they use? It's definitely too syrupy/sweet over here.

Usually if have half a pot of unfinished coffee, I make coffee ice cubes. Then you can fill up a glass with coffee ice cubes and pour in a freshly brewed pot for cold, not watered-down iced coffee.

Note: the toddy or cold brew method may be far superior, I haven't tried it. Just saying that Coffee ice cubes are better than regular ice cubes for putting coffee on ice.

Great zeus - McDonalds? Starbucks?

You people live in towns with crappy coffee it's obvious.

You can make it at home, get a toddy, let it seep at least 24 hours, cut it with whole milk and add kilos of sugar as you see fit.

This is the whole package, I think the other link is by parts.

Serious question. What is the real difference between buying the apparatus and the "big pot" method?

The apparatus just makes it a bit easier and cleaner. There is a hole in the bottom of the bucket that gets plugged with a stopper. You pull that and it drips into the carafe.

But yea, just dump a pound of coffee into a big pot, add cold water (or maple water for more flavor!), let it sit, and find a way to get the liquid out without the grounds (cheesecloth, fine mesh bag, coffee filter, an old sock, whatever).

I make my own cold coffee every day between about May 1st and September 30th.

Tim Horton's coffee (4 cups)

One shot of Lavazza espresso

One and a half cups of milk

3 teaspoons of sugar

One tablespoon of Hershey's milk chocolate syrup

Mix, shake, leave overnight at back of fridge. Put in a Thermos coffee cup and enjoy throughout the day. :hifive:

Takes less than a minute to make once the coffee is brewed, I always have cold Lavazza on hand.

You can throw a couple of ice cubes in one of these coffee cups, and the ice will still be there four hours later. If people are worried about calories hold the sugar and use skim milk, but you have to have the chocolate syrup. You can use caramel syrup as well, also very good.
