Idea to prevent NFL teams from resting starters (1 Viewer)

John 14:6

Jesus is Lord!
There has been concern over the years of NFL teams resting starters in the last week or two of the season. Fans want to see the star players playing in those games, but it's more beneficial to the teams to rest them for the playoffs... You all know all about this.

I was thinking there could be a way to make those games matter in the playoffs. First, the NFL playoffs would have to be set up such that every home team has a better record than the visitors. I would say have the four division champs make the playoffs and then the two wild cards, but then seed all six teams based on records. This has been proposed before for other reasons...

My idea would then be to give the home team in each playoff game one point for every win more than they have over the visiting team. For example, an 11-5 team hosting a 9-7 team would start the game with 2 points already.

This would give home teams a greater advantage, but it would also encourage all teams during the regular season to win as many games as possible...

Already addressed.

Did you happen to notice how many divisional match ups occur at year end on the 2012 schedule?

Exactly. I haven't dug very deep, but I did notice the Colts. Half of their divisional games are in the final 4 games of the season.W14- Titans

W15- Texans

W17- Texans

They could just do what the NBA does - litigate by way of incredibly high and heavy-handed fines that all teams must play their starters or face the wrath and demonstrative iron fist of David Stern Roger Goodell.

The Chachinator finds this concept a little silly.
Silly? It's ridiculously absurd. You gotta have manure for brains to even consider the idea of giving a team points to start the game. That's like thinking a spelling bee would be a good way to settle a tie.

So, the 15-1 team gets a bye, home field advantage, and 6 automatic points over the 9-7 wild card team? Ridiculous to even consider starting a game with any score other than zero-zero

And, is a tie a half point? Hell, that should be 10 points. Why not? It never really happens, right?

there is no reason to prevent teams from resting their starters. They earn that by the way they play the 1st 15 or so games.

What they need is a way to reward teams that play my fantasy players and rest my opponents' players.

Do you really think this is a good idea?

Not necessarily. That's why I posted it, to see what others would think.

Well you start with a faulty premise. Some fans would like to see players rested (fans of the team in position to do so).I don't see anyone that could possibly think that any game should start out anything other than 0-0.

I don't care either way, but I've more often heard people complaining about not being able to see the star players those games. But if it's not really an issue, then of course nothing needs to be done about it.

I've often heard the media say that fans complain about this, but I have never once heard a fan actually complain, unless fantasy football was involved.

:goodposting: no fan of a team is going to care 2 cents about a week 17 game and a team resting starters unless fantasy is involved or gambling of some form. they want their team to win in the playoffs.

I'm still trying to get past the part where anyone should be forcing a team to do anything with their roster and starting lineup. Maybe the government should force companies to make people go to work and not let their employees take vacation during the holidays.

Think about it. If there was some league policy that mandated that teams had to play their starters, imagine the outrage if Matt Schaub and Arian Foster both got hurt running into each other on a mix up in Week 17 when they were 15-1 and both ended up missing the playoffs.

The NFL might not like the tv ratings and fans might not like paying big money to see back ups at the end of the regular season, but I'm pretty sure both of those would rather see the stars playing in the playoffs. I would guess most fans would rather see their team's backups playing in Week 17 rather than in the Divisional round of the playoffs.

Giving points, no way.

More realistic option, in addition to division games late, have games between previous years division winners late. Imagine if last few weeks of season included Texans-Pats, Ravens-Broncos, Packers-49ers and Saints-Giants. 3 of four might hugely impact seedings.

I would like it if they had rivalry division games once in the beginning and once at the end of the season. I am not a fan of holding out both division games against the same teams until late in the season (like IND/HOU this year) for fear of their being mounting injuries. I would rather those teams be granted a better chance of being at full strength when they face off (thus the early season option). When they have teams play twice in three weeks, there is too great a chance that a key player could be out for both games (for example, Gronk vs. MIA this year although not a huge rivalry game).

Yeah, number of teams with 2 games against each other late. Don't like it.

Or, have an extra week of playoffs and make the team that sat it's players have to play last year's divisional winner in a lose and you're out mini-playoff. That would keep teams that earned the right to do so from resting their starters but would also get more teams into the playoffs and put less emphasis on the current season's performance.
