2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Andre Carter, DE, Washington Redskins

Player Page Link: Andre Carter Player Page

Each published article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, we request that you provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For DLs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, PD
For LBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PD
For DBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PDNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Andre Carter is in the coveted every down 4-3 DE role. Ideal situation for a defensive lineman to put up fantasy numbers. Last season he cracked the top 10 for the first time since 2002 and should be more than capable of doing it again this year.

Plus his father, Rubin Carter, was a D-tackle for the Broncos, so he has some pedigree, which is irrelevant but nice. :bs:

Something along the lines of 50 solos, 12 assts, 10 sacks, 3 FF & 1 FR is well within his reach.

They haven't done much to change the line from last year. I like the Erasmus James acquisition, and if it turns out to be a home run maybe that takes some attention away from Carter which might give him a bump, but how good can James be at this point?

The scheme is the same but simpler, and the offense probably can't be any worse than last year's, though the passing game is revamped, so the defense probably won't find itself with more leads that will allow Carter to pin his ears back and rush. I think his stats resemble last year's stats all in all:

10.5 sacks

43 tckl/12 asst

2 PD

4 FF

1 FR

The last 6 games he had 16 tackles, 4 assists and 4 sacks. If he could do that all year it would work out to 64t, 10a and 10 1/5 sacks.

That would be top 5 if he can do it. That's my prediction-

64

10

10.5 sacks

5 PD

4 FF

Do you really think he and the team can match what they did to finish the year all year long? I have my (strong) doubts about that.

It's easier to discount what players do the first 6 weeks than the last. Can he do that consistently? I don't know. But with Blache taking over as DC this year I think he will be used more. I'm glad you doubt him. That will make it easier to draft him. In a current draft he was the 16th DE taken. I like him there.

I think you misread me. I have him on one dynasty team and I've projected him to essentially repeat his year-end stats from last year, when he finished 10th. I agree he's a steal as DE16. I just don't think that he'll perform at the clip he ended the year last year, which would, as you said, put him into elite status at top 5.

OK. With a slightly new defense(and d line coach as coordinator) we'll see. Time will tell.

I truly like Carter as a somewhat underrated DL # 2 on my teams (given a starting roster of 2 DLs) I wouldn't rate him as top 5 DL but definitely a certain top 20 guy with upside.

Predictions often turn out to be god awful and are terribly hard to do but for the sake of argument:

55 tackles

10 assists

9.5 sacks

3 PD's

3 FF's

1 FR'ed

Well, I was merely referring to him as a potentially good # 2 DL on my roster in a 16-man-league (and not as the # 2 DL in a draft). That would mean he would be drafted somewhere in the vicinity of from 17 to 32 of DLs in a complete re-draft.

Year-to-year Andre Carter is more up and down then Jenna Jamison.

Hard for me to guage him after so many volatile campaigns.

Ignoring '04 when he played only 7 games he has played a full slate every year and responded with sack totals of 6.5, 12.5, 6.5, 4.5, 6, 12.5. Egads.

I would like to think as the RDE and primary pass rusher for Washington that Carter will again be as productive as he was last year. Certainly the Redskins will be a comptetive team week in and week out.

I expect a little regression as I dont see him as an elite rusher who will chalk up 15 sacks.

Though he could be about the same as last year... but in the NFL if your not getting better, your getting worse.

Tackles: 44

Assists: 8

Sacks: 8.5

Keep in mind when looking at Carter's history that he got switched for a couple of years in SF to a 3-4 ROLB, which was a very poor fit for him. Also, his modest sack total in 2006 was related in part to a huge number of defensive injuries and resulting scheme adjustments the team was forced to make. I'm not making excuses for him, nor do I think he's an elite pass rusher, but last year's numbers are less inflated with those considerations in mind.

This is going to be interesting with Taylor there now. I'm inclined in theory to add a sack or two to my projections, but to not change the tackle numbers much if at all. Trouble is, I'm wondering whether Carter really can generate a dozen sacks. I'm just not sure at this point.

On the next possession, the Bills went three-and-out.

Neither of those things are earth-shattering. Defenses are supposed to do such things.

But the Redskins kept the Bills out of the end zone on that first possession with Shawn Springs, their best cornerback, playing free safety.

And they got that three-and-out with Andre Carter moving from right defensive end to left defensive end and Jason Taylor moving from left to right. Carter has been at right defensive end for the past 33 games.

"That's something we've been working on at practice," Carter said. "It's a nice changeup, and it makes you a better all-around player. If you can play both sides, it keeps the offensive opponents guessing.

"If a tackle has to prepare for two opponents, it makes his job a lot tougher."

Taylor arrived at Redskins training camp July 21 after spending the previous 11 seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He also had spent most of his time in Miami at right defensive end.

Carter had 10 ½ sacks last season and is one of the team's most diligent workers. When Taylor was acquired, the polite thing to say was that Taylor would start out on the left side.

But when you are one of the best pass rushers in NFL history -- Taylor has 117 career sacks -- it is only a matter of time before your new team finds a way to put you where you are most effective.

The underlying feeling was that Carter would struggle if he moved to the left side. That was not the case last night.

Carter's time at left end was brief, but it was effective. He held his ground and even knocked down a pass on a third down play.

"I felt good," Carter said. "It's a matter of equilibrium. If you stay on a certain side for a long period of time, the muscle groups and everything like that get used to reacting in a certain way.

"When you flip, you've got to train your eyes and train your body. It's all about movement. It's about getting your reps in practice and being comfortable and not thinking about what you're doing and just letting loose."
