2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

11 sacks in 2004, 12 in 2005-2007, ouch! What happened?

With the FA acquisition of DE Bobby McCray (Jacksonville), there’s talk of Grant moving inside. McCray has looked very impressive in mini camp and OTA’s. This is a situation you’ll want to monitor real close. I think there’s a chance a move to DT could be permanent.

Most of us know Grant has himself in some off field trouble; he’s been indicted for involuntary manslaughter and faces a civil lawsuit. Grant is under contract thru 2013.

With Charles, it’s difficult enough to project his role, let alone numbers.

Grant was extremely productive as a high school RB and has always been an impressive athlete with a good combination of size, strength and quickness. After an great start to his career, his sack production has tailed off since he was moved to LDE, but he still puts up above average tackle numbers. He signed a huge contract extension a year ago that paid him $20 million in guaranteed money, which may have reduced his motivation a bit. He also underwent surgery this offseason for a torn ankle ligament that he suffered in late October but decided to play through. The legal issues are certainly cause for some concern, but if he is able to avoid a suspension (or incarceration, which seems unlikely) and stay healthy, Grant should have a rebound season and finish among the top-20 fantasy DL. The Saints made a couple of big upgrades on defense this offseason with the drafting of DT Sedrick Ellis and trade for MLB Jonathan Vilma, which should lead to more pass rush opportunities for Grant.

bump for some additional thoughts/projections on Grant. He was the #1 overall DL in 2004 and signed a huge contract just a year ago that included $20 million in guaranteed money. Can he become a relevant fantasy option again?

This guy received his pay-day in early '07 and hit cruise control. There's no better explanation. Over the past two seasons, the Saints have (finally) been in position where they're actually leading in games. This should have allowed the DE's to "pin their ears back" and chase the opposing QB's. Well...Will Smith capitalized on the Saints offense and posted 18 sacks over the past two seasons. Grant, however, only posted 8.5.

The writing in on the wall. Bobby McCray was given a few dollars to join the team, and I fully see him playing end on passing downs. Grant will either leave the field or slide to DT. Either way, the Grant of the '03 and '04 seasons is dead and gone. Get used to the following stat-line over the next few seasons...

45 solos

10 assist

5 sacks

2 FF

2 PD's

I am somewhere in between on Grant for this year (probaly higher than most) and in the future, I don't see McCray as a huge threat but see Grant as the one who could stop himself. As someone mentioned earlier he went into cruise control once he got his big payday and he has some character concerns with his recent brush with the law which if I recall is still lingering over his head. Personally I see McCray as more of a situational player brought in from the "bullpen" with the intention of getting sacks, I just don't see McCray as a starter or being on the field that often. On the positive side adding Sedrick Ellis and Vilma to the mix could open up things for Charles Grant, having Ellis and Will Smith on the line with him should open him up to increase his lackluster sack totals of the recent past. I would take a gamble on him this year to have a bounce back year, I am cautiously optimistic to have him as a mid to high level DL2.

49 tackles

12 assists

9.5 sacks

2 FF

2 PD

Also, let's not forget he was playing hurt last year.

I'd say 42 solos, 15 assists, 6.5 sacks, 1 FF

Saints | Grant used inside in dime packages

Wed, 6 Aug 2008 10:45:22 -0700

Bradley Handwerger, of WWLTV.com, reports New Orleans Saints DL Charles Grant was being used as an inside lineman during dime packages.

If Grant slides to DT next to Ellis on passing downs, are we looking at increased tackles and less sacks?

...I have Grant in a tackle heavy league.
