2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Charles Tillman, CB, Chicago Bears

Each published article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For DLs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, PD
For LBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PD
For DBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PDNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Tillman is a big, physical, tough CB in the perfect system. He is your classic zone (cover-2/tampa-2) corner. Not only one of the top IDP CB’s, but top DB as well. A small school, product from Louisiana-Lafayette, he’s been a model of consistency since his arrival in 2003.

Durability may be somewhat of a concern; Charles has missed at least one game every year the past 4 seasons, with 2004 being the only season missing extended time, in which a knee injury forced him into a spectator mode for 8 games.

Tillman should be one of the top IDP DB’s for some time, and a prime candidate for a move to safety in his golden years, possible earlier if Chicago was to see a coaching change and move away from a zone scheme, as like many zone corners, man coverage is not his forte. He’s signed through 2012.

PROJECTIONS 74 Solos / 10 Asst / 0 sacks / 5 INT’s / 14 PD’s he should be good for a FF or two.

Let's keep these going, guys. We'd love to see a bunch of message board quotes in these features.

Anybody concerned about the larger trend in solo tackles for Tillman over the past three seasons? 85 to 69 to 66 despite what appears to be a slightly weaker defense over that time. Still trust in the scheme?

Lots of chances for him and the Bears defenders this year.

He makes the most of his chances by getting steady tackles numbers as a fine run support CB and tackler.

That being said, I think his interceptions could dip yet again. It has never been his strong suit and besides his 2 picks against Brady a few years ago, he by-and-large gets all his picks from QBs known to throw lots of interceptions.

Tackles 84

Assists 11

Sacks 0

Ints 2

Pass D's 13

i just wish he could play against the bears qb's :excited:

Not for me. Not at his asking price.

Tillman got his big PAY DAY last year and he'll regress to Ed Reed status over the next 2 or 3 years. The guy is a consensus Top-10 DB, but he'll be lucky to top 70 solos in '08. Granted, the guy will still probably be Top-20 again in '08, but I cannot help to think the fire will be missing until the next contract discussion.

65-10

4 INT's

14 PD's

0 sack

Charles Tillman should finish in the top 20 DBs again this year assuming he doesn't miss any games with injury. He's very consistent for a Cornerback, as far as points per game played he is a very safe bet. He misses 1-2 games it seems every year so his numbers are just a touch off, I actually think this gives him much more value. Picked him up as the 31st DB in a new dyno draft this season, that's pretty low for getting a guy who will consistently give you top 20 performances and play in 90% + of his games. Very undervalued player, others can go grab the shiny new toy that might break once off the lot and I'll take Charles Tillman.

78 solo /10 asst /0 sacks /5 INT /14 PD (Nothing sexy, just steady, solid production)
