2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Elvis Dumervil, DE, Denver Broncos

Dumervil enjoyed a breakout season last year with 12 sacks. Will he repeat and establish himself among the elite players at his position? Or do you he'll regress and wind up in the DE2 or DE3 range?

Read a recent article saying rookie OT was handling Dumervil in camp. He's got a lot of youth lined up behind him, too (even though he is only in his third year). And the Broncos love rotating their d-line, right?

30 solos

5 assists

8 sacks

2 FF

He comes down to earth a bit.

I agree with Pick. Dumervil's value is tied almost exclusively to his sack total.

With Denver's rotational scheme, a healthy Jarvis Moss, and an emerging Tim Crowder I could see fewer snaps for Dumervil.

I'd buy him for 6-8 sack value.

I'm closer to 8-10 sacks but his tackles will probably go down. I think they will try use him more on passing downs while rotating with Ekuban (back from injury), Moss and Crowder. He's still the best rusher so far.

Border-line DE2 probably a DE3 but if leagues score heavy for sacks he could easily be a 2.

I must admit - Elvis totally caught me by surprise last season. Even with his 7.5 sacks in '06. It was an exceptional breakthrough for him.

I may be a bit jaded for having missed his boat. His size leaves me bewildered when compared to his position as a 4-3 end.

Under 6 foot by some reports and 255. His not long, like I would expect for a light DE. He short for a 4-3 DE or even a 3-4 OLB.

I do know this having watched him a few times last year, he seems very natural at his ability to get after the QB. Almost uncanny.

I do wonder and worry if he hurts them in the ground game more then the coaches would like.

Considering he isnt surrounded by the same type of defensive talent that Freeney is/was, he may not be given the same "just go after the QB" assignment that will allow him to play 3 downs.

His tackle numbers were low (34-5) especially compared to his sacks, which was an extension of his previous years numbers.

Will he now be a marked man? He should be. His sacks do come in bunches - all or nothing. Can he endure behemoth OTs as a DE in the 4-3?

Being that its June-

If he still splits time:

Tackles 27

Assist 7

Sacks 8.5

If he earns and can handle 3 downs:

Tackles 41

Assist 9

Sacks 13.5

Prediction:

Tackles 33

Assists 8

Sacks 9.5

I'll buy this. Unlike BST I lucked into him as my 3rd DE in a dynasty league that heavily rewards sacks, and I don't fully believe my eyes from last year. Still, he's got talent, but last year's sack totals seem more like an early career year than a baseline.
