2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Justin Tuck, DE, New York Giants

I'm one of those that drafted Tuck and had to wait and wait (much like Ruud the same year). It looks like it will pay off big time this year. Of course, last year wasn't shabby either and that was part time. I think he will be motivated to prove he is worth his new contract. He has the talent around him to keep offensive lines honest when blocking him. He has shown he can hold up against the run. Everything is lined up for Tuck to be a top-10 DE.

I know there is concern about him moving inside to DT on passing downs but he has shown he can be effective from there. If he ever gets a DT designation he will be gold in DT leagues. But even if he doesn't he will still be and every week starter as a DE.

I've always held the perception that Tuck was just a workout warrior. A physical specimin that just wasn't a good enough football player to put up numbers game in and game out.

But as I watched the Giants run through the playoffs, it became apparent he has what it takes. The only thing that held back his production was the fact that the Giants had three great pass rushers. Now with Strahan gone, he will have a chance to show what he can do with a full plate.

Obviously his numbers won't just increase at the same rate his playing time does. Last year he was fresher than the O-line and put in opportune positions, this year, he'll have to grind games out a little more. I expect a boost from last years numbers (which were nice), but nothing crazy.

48-15 tackles, 4 FF/FR's & 10.5 sacks are what I'm expecting. Not the top D-lineman, but he'll likely finish in the top-10.

Tuck was top 20 last year ( I think) in limited action. This year, he isnt limited and should finish as a top 10 DE. As mentioned above, he might play some DT, but at least he will be in for 3 downs this year. I dont see how he doesnt finish as a top 15 DE, likely top 10.

another long time owner of Tuck who is glad to see this day come.

easily should be a top 20 DL and possibly a top 10.

big plays might stay the same but with more playing time, tackles should go up.

now he should be an every week starter instead of trying to guess which week he will score big.

Assuming Tuck reports to camp in football shape, the skies the limit. He will see much more playing time this season with Strahan retiring. The only black-eye on Tuck's resume could be his movement to DT on passing downs...

...but he posted 65 total tackles and 10 sacks last year doing the same.

Top-10 DL.

bump to try and get some more responses/projections before we write this one up for the website

I like Tuck long-term. He's shown talent, has a great supporting cast to keep him isolated, little competition... everything looks perfect for him to explode this season.

That said, it rarely seems to work out the way we think it will. I'll drop my expectations a little for no concrete reason other than a feeling that DE is less predictable than LB - a great situation with good talent doesn't always mean that much - guys like Tamba Hali, Will Smith, and Mark Anderson have shown recently that a talented guy playing across from a stud can do very well, but isn't a lock for the top 10.

50 tackles, 12 assists, 10 sacks, 2 PD, 1 FF, 1 FR. DE12 or so, DL 15 or so. Great return for the investment most of us put in him, but not a slam-dunk stud.
