2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Leigh Bodden, CB, Detroit Lions

Player Page Link: Leigh Bodden Player Page

Each published article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, we request that you provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For DLs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, PD
For LBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PD
For DBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PDNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Small name...big FF player. Moving to the Lions Cover-2 scares me this year...since I don't have him on my team.

Bodden mad a mad-man in the Browns vanilla 3-4 scheme, and should be flat-out freaky for the Lions. The guy should equal last year's numbers and again be a Top-10 DB. I don't like his long-term prospects, but he should be solid for the Lions thru '08 and '09.

BTW, if it's worth anything, Marvin Lewis (HC - CIN) believes Bodden is one of the best CB's in the NFL. He made this statement AFTER the Browns traded him from the conference. Lewis has not been the Piccaso of defense recently, but he seemed to be happy with Bodden in the NFC.

Bodden is a hungry for a new contract and should have the following stat line...

75-20

4 INT's

15 PD's

1 sack

As good as he was last year, he's going to put up better numbers this year. I think this defense will be on the field a lot which will lead to even more tackle opportunities; not to mention the Cover 2 scheme.

I didn't know much about this guy last year when I drafted him, but I'm definitely pumped to watch him in action this year.

85/20

5 Int

10 PD

He sure landed in the right place; should be a great fit in Detroit’s cover/tampa-2 scheme. This guy could have a big year, and be one of the top IDP DB/CB for the next several years.

Durability is a good news bad news thing for Bodden.

The bad …Leigh has had his share of nagging injuries;

2004 shoulder strain, then a torn pec landed him on IR.

2005 groin and concussion (missed 3 games).

2006 limited due to ankle injuries throughout the year (missed 7 games).

The good … he played all 16 games last year and hasn’t really suffered any major injuries.

PROJECTIONS 78 solos / 16 Asst / 0 sacks / 5 INT / 17 PD’s

bump to try and get some more responses/projections before we write this one up for the website

Lions | Bodden working with second unit

Tue, 12 Aug 2008 09:38:45 -0700

The Associated Press reports Detroit Lions CB Leigh Bodden has been seeing most of his practice reps with the second-team defense during training camp. "We look at Leigh as a starter, but when we go to a base defense and there's only two corners on the field, CB Brian Kelly's starting at left and CB Travis Fisher's starting at right - currently," defensive coordinator Joe Barry said. "If we started the game tomorrow and the offense (required three cornerbacks), Leigh Bodden would start the game."

WHA?

Fisher is the returning "VET". Rod doesnt put the new guys into the starting line up front. So for the preseason he is number two....but came regular game time he will be there with Kelly. Bank it!I also wouldnt be suprised to see double digit INTs from Bodden this year. Yes I know thats crazy talk....but call me crazy again at the end of the year.

The problem I have with this is Det had Bodden in the starting lineup at the beginning of the pre-season over Fisher and now dropped him to second team in favor of Fisher ... why? Either his play has been poor (not what I have read) or Fisher is showing something I did not think he had in him ...

So is everyone holding on to him with this news? My ww is pretty stacked and I could grab a number of players right now. Don't really get this at all.

I'm in the same boat. I kept him and traded some talented DBs because I was confident he would be productive. If he's not starting I'll dump him without a second thought. High producing corners come and go every year.

Bodden will be the starter when the season opens. Its not even an issue.

read the whole thing not just a quote. This is the way rod does things

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Lions and cornerback Leigh Bodden agreed on a $27 million contract extension just after training camp started, yet he's still seeing most of his practice reps with the second team.

Don't expect that to last.

"We look at Leigh as a starter, but when we go to a base defense and there's only two corners on the field, Brian Kelly's starting at left and Travis Fisher's starting at right - currently," defensive coordinator Joe Barry said Monday.

"If we started the game tomorrow and the offense (required three cornerbacks), Leigh Bodden would start the game."

Bodden, acquired with a third-round draft pick from Cleveland during the offseason in the trade that sent defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Browns, signed a four-year extension two days into training camp. The deal, which added club options through 2013, included a $2 million signing bonus and an $8.6 million bonus if he's on the roster in March.

The cornerback, who'll turn 27 later this month, had two years remaining on his deal with Cleveland when he was traded.

Though Bodden acknowledged he understands he'll be on the field a lot this fall, it wasn't hard to see he'd rather be alongside Kelly when the Lions use only two corners.

"I've just got to do what I've got to do," he said. "If I make plays, what happens happens. I know I'm a starter in this league.

"It's definitely a pride thing, but it's not my decision. I can't worry about what I can't control. I just have to do it on the field."

Bodden was unhappy with Browns management before the trade when the club didn't offer him a long-term deal after the best season of his five-year career. Bodden, an undrafted rookie when he started in the NFL, played all 16 games last fall and had six interceptions and 76 tackles.

Already the likely starter when he arrived, Bodden's presence and durability are even more precious now that veteran Stanley Wilson is gone. Wilson, who started five of the 10 games he played last season, tore his Achilles' tendon during last week's preseason opener.

That leaves Kelly, an 11-year veteran signed as a free agent during the offseason, Fisher and Keith Smith as the only other corners with significant NFL experience. The latter duo played each played 15 games last season in Detroit.

Barry doesn't mind the jockeying for a starting job, especially after his secondary gave up 258.2 yards per game while managing just 17 interceptions. Only seven of those picks came form the corners.

"Our starting positions aren't written in Sharpie; they're written in pencil," Barry added. "We have four really good corners right now. In this league you can't have enough good corners.

"When you've got someone nipping at a starter's heels, that competition can be a great motivator."

Much as he wants to start the game on the field, Bodden agreed.

"It's a lot of talent in the backfield," he said. "We can be the strength of this defense.

"We go a long way if we can eliminate the big plays."

The Lions continue preseason play Sunday night at Cincinnati.

• Leigh Bodden is still behind Travis Fisher at one of the corner spots, but it’s only a formality because Fisher ended last season as a starter. Bodden has been making plays and just signed an extension. It’s only a matter of time before he takes his place on the first team. Fisher should continue to be the starting nickel back, though Kalvin Pearson might push him for that job.

The bolded part is not true. Bodden was never named as a starter.

:goodposting: Marinelli does things different than some coaches. He makes everyone "earn" their spot over an incumbent. You don't hand out $27 million dollar contracts to backups. There is zero doubt in my mind that Bodden starts. As a matter of fact, this is a great time to buy low from those who are in panic mode about this.
