2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Terrell Suggs, DE, Baltimore Ravens

Each published article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, we request that you provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For DLs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, PD
For LBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PD
For DBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PDNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

anyone have some thoughts on Suggs?
Well, the only thoughts I have are that he didnt sign a long term deal. He will be playing for a mega contract this year, so I have a feeling he dominates this year. Im not gonna take a guess with stats, but he is a guy I would target this year. IIRC, he started slow last year not recording a sack in like the 1st 5 games. He then went on to have a pretty monster season from there on. I think he goes all out this year.

Suggs averaged about 10 sacks per season prior to last year, when he only had 5. He is remarkably consistent tackle wise, with 46, 47, 47, and 52 the last four years.

I expect a typical Suggs year with him getting back to the 10 sack area. Solid mid DL1.

50 solos

24 asst

10 sacks

3 FF

2 FR

1 INT

7 PD

Watch how your league designates him and what the scoring is. Top line DL, middle of the road LB unless big play scoring is in effect.

Playing for a contract is always a motivator, with the bonus of the team trying to reclassify him to get a cheaper deal. I expect a very good year from him, with better tackle numbers than most of the sack specialists.

55 tackles

20 assists

12 sacks

2 FF/FR

5 PD

Top 5 DL.

Where do you rank Suggs among DL going into this season? Top-5, Top-10, or somewhere lower? Does the added time playing LB explain his dropoff in sacks last year? If so, do you think he can get back to double digit sacks or is he more likely to top out around 7 or 8?

I'm not aware of any "added time playing LB" last year. Maybe I missed that. It looked to me like a down year for that entire front 7, which meant that more offensive attention could be paid to Suggs. He's certainly top-10 among DE's, with upside that gets him into the top-5 if he returns to form. I like him to return to form with double digit sacks, though nothing earth-shattering, like the 10-11 range.

I couldn't find a link from a quick search and I'm not aware of any data available to chart something like this, but my understanding was that he spent more time at OLB last year than he had in prior years. Back when Adalius Thomas was still on the team, I believe Suggs spent more time playing like a traditional DE. That, along with not having an effective complementary pass rusher like Thomas or Trevor Pryce available for most of the season, likely limited his sack opportunities.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't see how you could really tell the difference given that in either event he's rushing from the weak side, and was alternating at various times between being in a two-point and a three-point stance. I just don't know where his role has really changed, and the whole flap about whether he'd officially be designated as a DE or a OLB seemed to be opportunism on the part of the Ravens rather than a true reflection of how he was being used.

you don't think playing OLB vs DE will impact a player's numbers?

That's not what I'm saying at all. I just don't think he was in fact playing a different position last year versus prior years. Again, I'm interested in any information that conflicts with that, but that was my impression.
