2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Trent Cole, DL, Philadelphia Eagles

Each published article will include:

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, we request that you provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For DLs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, PD
For LBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PD
For DBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PDNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

I may be going out on a limb but I am going to project Cole finishes in the number one spot if he stays healthy.

65 solo 17 assist 18 sacks

I say the rotation robs him of some value - Abiamiri gets a little more of the pie and Cole drops to:

45/20, 2 FF, 1 FR, 10 sacks.

Over the past two years combined, Cole has 15 sacks in Games 1 through 8 from each season, but just 6 sacks in the 16 games from Games 9 through 16 from each season. As an undersized end, it seems likely that he could be wearing down a bit late in the season. In order to become a truly elite fantasy DE, he'll need to be more consistent over the entire season. He clearly has the potential to be a top-5 DE every season and although his numbers seem to decline in the second half, he's played in all but 1 game over the past 3 seasons so he's been durable.

Anyone have some more thoughts on Cole? Do you consider him to be an elite top-10 fantasy DE?

As stated before I think he will finish #1 this year and will perform much better in the second half, he is young and more upside than any other DE in my mind.

Put Trent Cole on any other team and you easily have a Top-5 DE in redraft and dynasty play.

But with his obsession with keeping his defensive ends fresh, Defensive Coordinator, Jim Johnson will be the sole reason why Cole doesn't post Top-5 numbers this season. If you have two QB's, you have none. If you have 4-5 good DE's, you have a rotation. More snaps for Juqua Thomas, Chris Clemons and Darren Howard means less less chances for Trent Coles to wreck havoc. Victor Abiamiri will also be in the mix.

Cole will get his 10-14 sacks, but don't expect 50+ tackles.

regardless he is a stud!!! if there is quality rotation then he will lose some reps but it will greatly increase his stats in the second half were he has strugled in the past.
