If Morgan is out.... (1 Viewer)

Dan Morgan has injured his shoulder and heel and his status for this week anyway is unknown. He has not been the picture of health the last few years with players like Witherspoon and Draft stepping in and having nice stats. SO.......would Beason move to the middle or would Stewart start in the middle and Beason stay on as the WILL?

It appears it may depend on how long Morgan would be out.

Last week, James Anderson took the snaps at MLB with Morgan out. That may have only been because backup Adam Seward was already injured. When asked, John Fox said that Anderson and Beason can play both positions and he values the flexibility. I think most would argue that Beason would work his way into the MLB job if Morgan went down for an extended period, but it wouldn't be shocking to see Anderson get a start there if Seward is down again.

I speculated, somewhat wildly, last season that Anderson could end up in the middle for the long term. With Beason in the picture that was looking unlikely, but there's at least a small chance that Anderson could seize the job with good play. Obviously nothing is certain, here, but this situation remains key to watch.

Thanks Jene, for the info and for the correction[seward not Stewart].

Jene, it was my impression that if Morgan can't go in the middle, long term (and I emphasize this) the plan seemed to be that Anderson would be the WLB and Beason would replace Morgan in the middle; during the transition period, however, Anderson would play at MLB long enough for Beason to get up to speed.

Have you changed your mind on this?

Nope, I think that's pretty much what I said above. But I think it would be a mistake to completely discount the possibility that the roles could end up reversed if Anderson played well for a game or two should Morgan be out longer than expected.

Well, you were really only focused on the MLB situation above, so I wanted to clarify regarding Anderson's future at WLB. Thanks for the insight though.

Oops. Sorry, didn't see that angle. I'd complain about the little guy cramping my sleep schedule, but I know you're getting less than I am. I still think Anderson is a starter in the long-term and most likely at WLB, yes.

What ... Morgan's injured  Somethings never change

As a Davis owner, I suggest Beason to mike Anderson or whoever to sam, and Davis to will :lmao: Pleeeeaaaasssseee

I believe in the current system that the SLB is actually more valuable than the WLB spot. My thinking could be wrong here but that is just a thought on trying to remember tackle numbers in the past without actually looking.

You may be right. Fields put up good numbers, but I think Witherspoons were better, but that may be cause he filled in for Morgan at mike. One thing for sure, Davis will play in nickel.

Beason missed a lot of camp, so they probably want to keep him at one position for the time being. I still think he would play in the middle if something long term happens to Morgan.

But Beason, the 25th pick of the draft, said he's not ready to switch to the middle.

"It's not that I don't know it, but getting the signals in and getting everybody lined up," Beason said. "It's that part of it, being the actual quarterback of the defense. Not so much what the (middle) backer has to do. That aspect, you have like four seconds to get (the play) and it's fast paced and I wouldn't want to mess anything up."

Which makes Anderson's quick grasp of the position that much more impressive. He replaced Morgan late on a Falcons' touchdown drive early in the third quarter. Atlanta managed only one field goal the rest of the way in Carolina's 27-20 win.

"He's a special guy. He's a valuable linebacker who can play all three spots," Beason said. "Even in our goal-line package he knows everything. He's really a sponge and you can always go to him. I'm asking him questions all the time."

After reading this article I would think Anderson has a pretty good shot at starting. The fact that Beason says he is scared of taking on a role like that this early, leans me away from thinking he might get the call this week. I have a feeling we are going to see a little more activity in the box score from Davis and Beason, with Anderson filling in nicely in the middle.

I hate coachspeak, I really do.

“Anderson will be one of the options,” said Fox. “He’s a guy who stepped in on short notice last week, and I thought did an admirable job. Beason is a rookie. He is young. Sometimes one position is all you can handle, but he’s a very instinctive guy and he has that ability, so he is one of the options, too.”

I have found that when they say so and so did an admirable job it means he tried hard but just didn't get the job done. Also, the way he talks about Beason makes me feel he will get the call at Mike this week, (e.g.Sometimes one position is all you can handle, but he’s a very instinctive guy and he has that ability) but that's just my read on his words which are not very clear to begin with. Plus, as a Beason owner I may be hearing what I want to. Thanks for the info all.
