If the US didn't help create and support Israel, what would the world look like?  What would the United States' role and perception be in various parts of the world?

Discuss.

Wow. If we didn't support the only democracy in the Middle East, what would the world look like?

It'd look terrible.

The fight would have been Shi'a/Sunni and our missteps in the name of oil would have put us in similar position. We are a convenient Devil.

Can't have that much money and that much tribalism and expect another variety of outcome. If Sunnis had stomped there'd be a Sunni rift....

I can't speak for the world but I'm pretty sure most of the Middle East would look like a glass parking lot.

"Various parts of the world" that oppose us because we support the only thing resembling a liberal society in the middle east are folks whose support I do not want.

That's what I want to say, frankly, but I'm on my day off and trying not to do politics. This topic broaches some subjects that aren't rational nor polite.  Thanks, IK.

To expand on my earlier point: The USA actually almost destroyed Israel at the outset by imposing an arms embargo at the start of the 1948 War of Independence. The Israelis had to smuggle their arms from Czechoslovakia. George Marshall, our Secretary of State, urged Truman not to recognize Israel because he feared that the United Nations would be forced to ensure the peace, which would bring in Soviet troops into the Middle East. Truman compromised by recognizing Israel but refusing to help in any way in the war. Meanwhile, Great Britain openly helped Jordan and Egypt.

The notion that the United States, and the west in general, helped establish the State of Israel is  pure fiction created by the Arabs to explain their losses in the 1948 War. Sadly it has spread and is believed today by lots of people, including many progressives who don't know the real story.

I like that, well put. Not the actual fact that all things US (except the $$$) are despised in the ME just the phrasing of that sentiment.

IF the US didn't back Israel...Israel would be kicking the #### out of Muslims.
I think there's a lot of truth to this. We tend to hold Israel back from acting preemptively because we don't want to disrupt the region and put access to ME oil in harm's way.
