If You Could See Final 2010 Stats Today For 2 Players (1 Viewer)

Time for a little Friday fantasy nonsense.

If you were magically given an opportunity to look at final 2010 stats for just two players, who would you choose? And why? I'll post my answers in a while. I'm thinking.

Montario Hardesty and Laurence Maroney. They're my back-ups behind Adrian Peterson and Cedric Benson. Benson has a rather big salary so if Hardesty and/or Maroney could put up some nice numbers this year, I'd try to deal Benson.

The best answer would be for players that are big risk/reward players. Guys like Ryan Mathews, Javhid Best, etc.

Favre is the obvious choice. Either Barber/Felix would be a nice looksey too.

Jake Delhomme just from the standpoint that I curious if he could actual play worse.

Matthew Stafford and either Wes Welker (PPR) or Johnny Knox. I figure if you choose players in the passing game, it'll give you some idea of what to expect from others in the same passing game as well.

Jay Cutler and Kevin Kolb, these are the 2 qb's im targeting if Romo and Shaub are gone by the time i pick in the 3rd. If i knew that kolb or Cutler is going to have a big year, i can take them in the 5th and have a stacked team at rb and wr

I'm going the other way. Aaron Rodgers and Brandon Marshall. I'm in a 10 team, 2QB league and these are my projected 1st 2 round picks. I'd want to know if they are worth it.

I'll tell you one guy that pretty much everyone should be mentioning...and that's Jamaal Charles.

He's the classic high risk/reward pick and isn't going to be cheap (at least a 3rd rounder in most 12 team leagues). You can easily argue Charles is going to be one of the most important fantasy players this year given that he will make/break ALOT of teams in the fantasy community.

Aaron Rodgers and Jonathan Stewart

Is Rodgers going to put up 5,000 total yards and 40 total TDs making him a lock 1st rounder? And will JStew find a way to put up RB1 numbers despit his 3rd/4th round ADP?

There's a lot of ways to go here... Favre is a great candidate, but I think the consensus is he'll play.

Forsett, LT, Dez Bryant, Jonathan Stewart, Hester, M. Bush, Foster, Jamaal Charles, LJ... all good candidates.

1) I think I'd go with Jamaal Charles because of all the questions about how he and TJones will divide workload, as well as whether Charles is on a Chris Johnson-like curve or a Julius Jones-like curve. If the stats showed he's more like Chris Johnson, I'd be trying like mad to trade for him in dynasty leagues whereas right now I'm sorta

2) Cutler. A year ago he was coming off a 4,500 yard, QB5 finish and everyone was talking about him being the next great thing. Then the McD stuff started, he moved on and didn't fare so well, and now has a new Martz O to try to learn. If I saw 4,500 yards and 30+ TDs I'd be all over him and his WRs. If I saw 3,700 yards, 22 TDs and 30 INTs, not so much. If I saw low pass attempts I'd know that Martz' "don't bother protecting the QB" philosophy got him pulverized.

Brees and Manning

or

Kolb and Cutler

Because I'm in a 14 teamer with slightly odd scoring and I'd have to decide between the first two in the first round, and something in my gut says to avoid Brees...I have no idea why...

And because if I took neither, I'd want to know which of the other two to take in the 6th or 7th round.

Greg Jennings and Reggie Wayne.

If their numbers are high then perhaps we can intuit the failure of the Finley/Garcon breakout.

If their numbers are low (and we assume a healthy Rodgers/Manning) then all that production went somewhere . . . .

Jamaal Charles and Marshawn Lynch

The ultimate risk-reward play and the one guy ANYONE can draft with Top 10 upside in the right situation (i.e. traded to a run-first team that loses their bellcow Week 1).

Lynch and VJax. With those guys it's going to be feast or famine and you could do very well if you knew which. Maybe McGahee for the same reason.

From a fantasy perspective, I'd look for 2 guys who have decent value that could skyrocket if things went well. However, for me, I'd want to know Spiller and Beanie.

Spiller - would love to see if he's as good as I think he is.

Sidney Rice - would find out if his hips ok and could prob tell if farve came back

Why not just look at Finley and Garcon's numbers instead?

Jay Cutler QB CHI - A look at his stats would give some indication as to what impact the Mike Martz passing offense had in Chicago. From that, you would be able to better project how Hester, Knox and the rest will do.

Matt Leinart QB ARZ - This for the same type of reasoning with Fitz, Breaston and the RB corps in Arizona. Will they really shift to a run-based offense? How far will Fitz fall with Leinart throwing him the ball? When will Anderson take over the offense....

Excellent question - both thought provoking and multiple "right" answers. Gotta love that.I'd throw another angle into this - how about being able to look at two kickers' full stats? That's a great way to determine how big (or little) of an offense we'll see for a team. Plus if the kicker gets 40 FGs and only 25 XPTs, keep me away from that offense entirely unless it truly is a one man band (for example I wouldn't shy away from MJD if Josh Scobee had modest output). That aside, I'd probably want a peek at a RB2's statline. If McGahee has big TD numbers, that validates a RB3 pick and also might warn me a little about Ray Rice.In a different outlook if I had a later first round pick the guy I'd want to know about is SJax. Is he going to be worth a pick there or not? DeAngelo Williams is a similar type of player I'd want to know about. It is really interesting to try and figure out what other stats can be inferred based on one players' numbers. If Ronnie Brown had 1500 yards then Ricky Williams should never get picked. If Brees has 50 TDs then grab any Saint you can find. Nice thought experiment. I'd take a risk/reward RB in the first 5 rounds and if his numbers were terrible I'd load up on the later round backups. I'd take two of Adrian Foster, Joseph Addai, Forsett, Knowshon Moreno, Michael Bush and Beanie Wells. I like Addai and Foster the most of that group.

It'd also be interesting to revisit this at the end of the year and think what sort of conclusions you would have reached. After all, just because we have knowledge, it doesn't mean our assumptions about WHY are correct.

My two are Percy Harvin and Michael Bush.

Percy because I want to know if he's going to miss multiple games again. If he's going to miss crucial games for a second straight season, I'd like to trade him before he does. If he plays a high number of games but his receiving numbers are depressed, then it should provide some insight to the Minnesota offense as a whole since it would lead me to conclude Favre didn't come back and the Vikes focused on the run.

Bush because he has the clearest A or B situation and easiest path to being a Top 15 back. It's doubtful that anyone but McFadden would emerge as the Oakland RB to own. I'd be tempted to pick Arian Foster or Felix Jones, but knowing their stats might not answer questions about which of the other RBs on the team has the greatest value. While one might conclude it would be Barber or Tate, there's plenty of indication that wouldn't be the case (Barber's injuries, Slaton's prior success and Tate's slowness to ascend the depth chart).

Eddie Royal is the first player that comes to mind. I just can't get a good feel for him. After that I'd probably go with Felix Jones. I think there are still more questions than answers regarding his use.

Sidney Rice and Jonathan Stewart. If Rice has a good year, I'm high on the Vikings. If Stewart blows up, I want nothing to do with DeAngelo, and vice versa.

Because I was trying to be CLEVER!

S-Jax and J-Stew.

Runner up: Jamal Charles.

Will make my last protect decision much easier in one of my leagues.

Steve Slaton bc if he gets nothing you know that Foster gets monster carries. Tate seems far behind them thus far in camp and won't be starting. I think it's a two horse race right now and if Slaton wins and can regain a his rookie form he could be huge value. Same for Foster.

Then I would say Spiller. His situation is pretty up win the air and I think he could be huge as well.
