Throwing equipment and almost hitting someone, and having a heated "debate" with your boss.

I was working in a heart surgery where a surgeon out of anger threw a pair of scissors against the wall due to the scissors being dull.  High stress environment needless to say but as soon as the surgery was over the same surgeon was escorted out of the hospital and had his privileges revoked never to do surgery again in that hospital.

I spoke with someone in risk management and they stated had the hospital not taken a zero tolerance approach it would have opened them up to a large lawsuit.  "If that surgeon was ever to accidentally hit someone with an instrument the lawsuit would be devastating especially with a known track record of such outbursts."

I see in the above video two people who could have been hit with the helmet and a lot of what ifs.

That's so tame compared to something like David Ortiz' tantrums that I can barely muster up any outrage.

It looks like a toss of the helmet to me, nothing more. And I think he's #####ing to his coach about the officials, both from the looks of it and according to him.

Lmao he barely threw the helmet. Come on now. Im not a fan of this guy but nobody could've been hurt by that.

I very much dislike OBJ's antics, he kind of puts in mind of Chad Johnson/Ocho Cinco/85/etc (baggage > talent) but this is such a nothing story, it just feels like "slow sports day, let's talk about OBJ. . . again."  Yawn.

Being a Browns fan, I can speak on behalf of OBJ, the team and pretty much all of the fan base. What he was saying was, "Look Fred, you can take a bus, you can take a boat, you can take a plane, hell I'll drive you but you gotta get on up outta here, right now!"

Your risk management guy was overstating the risk, as risk managers are prone to do.  I would say escorting him out of the building that day was a massive overreaction.  The much larger concern for me would be the person who did the prep work and left dull scissors for the surgeon to work with.  That's the one your risk guy should be worried about.

Do you think it was a one person decision to revoke privileges from a surgeon?   Yes the guy who made a mistake not sharpening the scissors should have been fired because mistakes should never happen.

This wasn’t his first go around I’m willing to bet. Hospitals typically have a long paper trail of instances before revoking a surgeons privileges.

Absolutely. It’s tough to get rid of doctors, even bad ones.

And I don’t think OR techs are responsible for keeping instruments sharp.

Not all work environments have the same expected protocols and decorum. If two opponents got into a first fight mid game, NHL gives a 5 minute penalty, NFL likely suspends 2 games and PGA might issue a one year ban. Getting into a curse word filled screaming match with a co-worker is likely somewhat common in football or rock music to the point where the management won't issue any kind of consequence. If two teachers do the same thing, they are probably suspended without pay for a few days at best and fired at worst.

There's not just one pair of scissors. They have multiple trays made up of instrument sets, and already sterilized for use. Plus, there are individual peel packs of one-off instruments, in case something is dull or hits the ground.

Sharpening is always outsourced to a technician who travels around and sharpens- those services can be spotty, at best. Plus, it relies on a whole process: surgeon says "hey, these are dull af!"; scrub tech puts them aside for the case; end of case, scrub tech attaches a tag to them; instruments sent down to Sterile Processing to be cleaned; SPD Tech cleans and washes them, takes them off the set they're on, replaces them and puts them in a bin for sharpening. Sharpening tech comes and does their magic. Wala. I'm Rick Schroeder, and that's one to grow on.

An operating room and a football sideline are exactly the same.

Show me a video of Janice from accounting and Doreen the administrative assistant throwing down in the lobby and I might care. But a football player angry b/c a blown play could result in him missing a multi-million dollar bonus trigger means nothing to me.

Work industry, environment, and place all play large roles in how such an occurrence would be handled.  I’m quite confident the first question to me if I were do this would be why I had a football helmet at the office to begin with.  After which I’d blame Karen for some vague grievance, boss would concur, and we’d high five

I have to wear a hard hat on job sites.  If I came into the office and tossed my hard hat against the wall with the same force OBJ used to toss his helmet, the reaction from my coworkers would be    not    My boss would sarcastically ask, "Tough day?", and that would be the end of it.

Should throwing a temper tantrum be different in any profession?
Can't say it is all that uncommon in my career.  Things get competitive, and when people don't do their jobs it affects other people's ability to make a living.

To go along with your story, surgeons throw temper tantrums all the time.  See it all the time.  They are always there the next time.
