If you were a GM of NFL with unlimited $$$ (1 Viewer)

OK. I've been thinking about this for some time now.

If you could put together AN ACTUAL NFL team, who would you choose?

Rules...

1. No Salary Cap (I know, but this is for fun)

2. Any current, active player

3. 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 2 TE

Some rough guidelines...

1. This IS NOT about individual stats, not like fantasy football. Imagine these guys actually playing together on the field and have to complement each other.

2. Although tempting, try to be creative with your choices. Taking the top guys in each category may not necessarily be the best way to go about it.

3. Give explanations as to why you have picked this particular roster.

*We could expand to OL, DL, special teams etc... That would require a deeper knowledge of football than I admittedly have.*

Mr. Roboto's Team of Destiny

QB: Peyton Manning - the guy can make any throw, but the best qualities about him for this discussion would be his leadership, football IQ, feeding multiple receivers, and ability to audible based on defensive looks.

RB: Chris Johnson - Simply put, home run hitter. Take-it-to-the-house any time he touches it.

RB: Michael Turner - Bowling ball, between-the-tackles runner, who would probably be the guy I would use in the beginning of the game to wear down defenses and run out the clock.

WR: Larry Fitzgerald - All-around stud, good character guy who likes to help the younger players. Plus he can catch anything.

WR: Wes Welker - great RAC, possession receiver who can find the holes in the defense and exploit slower LB's.

WR: Derek Mason - Pro's pro of WR's, he runs fantastic routes, has great hands, and is a veteran presence.

TE:Finley

TE:Finley

kidding...

TE: Antonio Gates - Red-zone monster, veteran pro who knows ho to get open and is a great outlet for the QB

TE: Jimmy Kleinsasser - I know, homer here. I worked for the security firm who did gameday security for the Vikings. This guy is BUILT. There was a reporter who asked one of the Williams' who be the last guy standing in a locker-room fight. Without missing a beat, he said 'Kleinsasser.'

Hopefully this isn't HONDA. If so, direct the thread there. Although if the other one is old, it may be irrelevant.

QB: Peyton Manning - Smart, OC on the field

RB: Chris Johnson - Threat to score from anywhere

RB: Adrian Peterson - Runs like a freight train

WR: Andre Johnson - Consistency

WR: Miles Austin - Runs some of the best routes in the NFL

WR: Hines Ward - Selfless and a great blocker

TE: Gates - Class of the position

TE: Davis - More than a receiver, this guy can block!

That would be my team.

QB - Brady

RB - C. Johnson

RB - MJD

WR - R. Moss

WR - A. Johnson

WR - Fitz

TE - Gates

TE - Davis

QB: Brees. There are guys more physically talented, but I love the passion he brings. He is a real leader and he can make any throw and is just a gutsy QB.

RB: ADP. Peterson does it all. If he had the holes Johnson sees he would eclipse the season rushing record easily. He has almost as much speed, equal elusiveness, and more power.

WRs: Moss and Marshall. Moss is still one of the best deep threats who is always capable of stretching the field. Marshall is the ultimate possession WR who is also capable of taking it to the house.

TE: Gates. He is the best and has bee for at least five years.

QB - Manning (Still the best QB in the NFL)

RB - Chris Johnson - Most dynamic RB right now

RB - CJ Spiller - Plenty of guys better than this but his versatility on my all star squad would be invaluable

WR - Larry Fitzgerald - Most talented WR in the NFL

WR - Calvin Johnson - The complete package...couldn't imagine what he could do with a legit QB and weapons around him. We'll probably know soon though

Stafford's injury doesn't help.

WR - Donald Driver - the ageless wonder who is does a great job working the underneath routes with these guys. Plus love his leadership abilities.

TE - Jermichael Finley - most dynamic young TE in the league who's really a WR in a TE's body

TE - Dallas Clark - Gates and Davis may be better but I like giving Manning his security blanket.

I wanted to put Peterson on my list but if I'm dishing out infinite amounts of money I want my RBs to hold onto the ball....

I Haven't collected my thoughts yet but...fun thread. Should also do one for "all-time" players. Feels like an off-season discussion or session of Madden 2011.

Oh yea... Can you have more than one Jermichael Finley?

I'd take the best player at every position:

QB - Peyton Manning

RB - Chris Johnson

RB - Adrian Peterson

WR - Larry Fitzgerald

WR - Andre Johnson

WR - Steve Smith

TE - Antonio Gates

TE - Dallas Clark

QB, RB, and TE seem like fairly easy decisions. I guess you could argue someone like Brees or Finley in those spots. Gates is a better blocker than Finley though and Clark has more speed. The hardest spot for me to pick is the third WR, where I think you can also make a good case for Anquan Boldin, Chad Ochocinco, Brandon Marshall, and Reggie Wayne. Smith's speed and toughness are great though and he would be dirty in the slot.

QB: Peyton Manning

He is, IMO, the greatest ever. End of story.

RB: Chris Johnson Adrian Peterson

RB: Maurice Jones-Drew

Johnson has the game breaking speed I want, although it was tough for me to pick between him and AD, as I knew MJD would make my team. He is, IMO, the best goal line guy in the game, and I think he's also one of, if not the best pass catching back out there. He's also more of a bowling ball pound it guy than I think Peterson is, although Peterson is definitely as physical runner. Actually, I am now changing CJ4.24 to Adrian Peterson...I want to pound the ball hard with two guys who can break some strong tackles and then also use speed to score from distance. If I can't make good enough holes, I want guys who can bull through somebody to get the yards anyway.

WR: Larry Fitzgerald

WR: Miles Austin

WR: Chad Ochocinco

I think Larry Fitzgerald has the best hand sin the game, and might be the best deep threat there is today (Moss). He has one of the best catch radii I have ever seen, and he's also got all the intangibles. Miles Austin is a tackle breaking YAC playmaker, and he has the quickness to run out of the slot as well as the tools to play flanker or split end. Also has all the intangibles you could possibly ask for. Ochocinco has the route running skills and quickness that you also find in Fitz and Austin, although I think he is perhaps the best of the three with technique on routes. All 3 guys have good hands, all three can hurt you after the catch, and both Ocho and Austin can play both inside and outside.

Steve Smith CAR would be my next choice for Austin/Ocho, and Andre Johnson comes close to Fitz, as he brings the same skillset of deep balls and possession hands than Fitz does.

TE: Antonio Gates

TE: Jason Witten

I think Gates is one of the best ever pass receiving TEs with blocking. I would rather have Gates and Gonzo than Sharpe because I think they are both better blockers (although I think Sharpe blocked pretty well with the Ravens iirc). Witten has great pass catching ability as well as vastly superior toughness to most players and is also a great blocker. I could run a lot of 2 TE sets and REALLY pound the ball. A full house with MJD on one side, Witten on the other, Gates on the line, and AD lines up in the back would be deadly.

ETA: I did the strikethrough wrong

Gotta admit I admire the Ward/Mason/Driver comments. I'd put Anquan Boldin at the top of that group though. More talented, younger, tough as nails, and all the other intangibles.

For all out talent, I've got Andre Johnson and Larry Fitz.

For the slot it's gotta be Welker.

Now the debate is whether to give Boldin a slot and drop one of the three above.

Elsewhere...

QB has to be Peyton.

RB is Johnson plus whichever "power" back you prefer: Peterson, Turner, or Steven Jackson. The only reason *not* to choose Peterson would be the fumbling.

TE is Gates and Clark, easily.

Only if you hire Dr. Jermichael Decorean Finley, the nation's foremost genetics expert, to clone him...

QB - Rodgers - A young gunslinger who will be good for many years to come

RB - Chris Johnson - Obvious choice really no comparison

RB - ADP- All pro version of thunder and lightning

WR - Andre Johnson- Most talented WR in the NFL

WR - Calvin Johnson - A playmaker if the ball is anywhere near him he catches it

WR - Miles Austin - Smartest reciever in the game

TE - Jermichael Finley - Im unsure how good of a blocker he is but you simply cant ignore the matchup problems he presents

TE - Witten - Can double as a blocker and receiver which is invaluable

QB - Peyton Manning

RB - ADP

RB - Chris Johnson

I picked receivers that have the best YAC ability/Least Drops since Peyton is so accurate

WR - Andre Johnson

WR - Brandon Marshall

WR - Wes Welker

TE - Dallas Clark

TE - Antonio Gates

TE: Jimmy Kleinsasser - I know, homer here. I worked for the security firm who did gameday security for the Vikings. This guy is BUILT. There was a reporter who asked one of the Williams' who be the last guy standing in a locker-room fight. Without missing a beat, he said 'Kleinsasser.'
Bah... you managed to drag me into this thread, but only because I like me some Kleinsasser. He's been my favorite Viking to watch for a while, even when the Culpepper/Moss fireworks were still going strong. One tough SoB, and one of the few TEs left in the H-Back/FB mold. That being said... I probably wouldn't build a franchise around a 33 year old 'sauce. So... probably Heath Miller and Jason Witten as guys who can do it all, but are great blockers first. I might have given some consideration to Becht, who was more of a pass-catching offensive tackle, but I think he's out of the league now.

QB: Peyton

Split-End: Larry Fitzgerald

Flanker: Andre Johnson

Slot/Possession: Hines Ward

TE: Heath Miller

TE: Jason Witten

RB: Steven Jackson (underrated, because his team is so terrible)

Change of pace RB: Chris Johnson

Edit to add: I think we should have fullbacks in the mix... and not just because I accidentally picked two Steelers and no Brownies. So...

FB: Lawrence Vickers

Anyone taking a chance on a guy not in the top 5 at his position in terms of statistical production?
I don't get why everyone's picking two All-Star RBs like Johnson + Peterson. You realize there's only one ball, right? Wouldn't you be much better off burning the roster spot on a filthy FB to blow up LBs and keep your star RB free to make the magic happen? Do you think Houston would have traded Vonta Leach for a second ballcarrier against Indy last week? I certainly don't.

No. With any of the above trios of wide receivers and the QBs being named, there's no D in the league that is playing 8 men in the box. It would probably be dime formation the entire game with 2 deep safeties. You give Peterson or Johnson 6 or 7 guys in the box with only 1 or 2 linebackers around and they have no need for a fullback. Having both would just protect you from injury concerns.

Yep.Although I'm all for adding positions.

I simply assumed that we weren't picking FBs...Leach is exactly the guy I want if we do though, he's nasty.

Sure, there's no D in the league that would play 8 men in the box. Did I miss something, though? Did the NFL pass a rule that fullbacks weren't allowed to block if there were only 7 men in the box?Having both Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson on the field at the same time does absolutely no good. Having Chris Johnson and Vonta Leach on the field at the same time, however, would do a ton of good. Or, if not Vonta Leach, then at least pick a second RB who's a big-time receiving threat out of the backfield. Having Johnson and Peterson gives you two great players... but you can only use one on any given play. Having Johnson and Leach gives you two great players... and you can use them both on every play. Why do you think Carolina rarely (if ever) lines up with Williams and Stewart on the field at the same time?

QB - Brees - Just as smart as Manning, can make all the same throws as Manning, and is more mobile. That gives him the edge, IMO.

RB - Chris Johnson - No brainer, can run, catch, he's instant offense

RB - Maurice Jones-Drew - Peterson's fumbles turn me off. MJD is probably the most consistent back in the NFL over the last 4 years and last year proved he is capable of taking on the bulk of carries. Provides the thunder to CJ's lightning.

WR - Andre Johnson - Best WR in football right now. Hands down.

WR - Larry Fitzgerald - Perfect complement to AJ as the "possession guy". Not that he's limited to that, but I can't think of anybody better at making tough catches over the middle and jump balls in the end zone.

WR - Wes Welker - Always open, perfect chain-mover.

TE - Antonio Gates - Don't think I have to explain this pick.

TE - Vernon Davis - Best blocking TE in the game today, which would make him worth the pick even if he never caught a single pass.

Here is my lineup, and yes I added a few positions...
