I'm just about done going out to the movies (1 Viewer)

I have 3 kids and it's already been getting too expensive to go out to a movie, for even a matinee it's $9 for an adult and $8 for a kid. I'm paying $42 to get in the door before I even touch popcorn or drinks. If we all split a big popcorn and a couple sodas I'm at probably $55.

Now it's even worse. My local AMC is playing 5 kids movies: Gulliver, Yogi, Narnia, Tangled, and Megamind. I was going to take everyone to a movie over the weekend but every single one of them is ONLY in 3D except Yogi (the only one I don't think I can handle).

Now we're looking at $13 for adults and $12 for kids for a matinee. So I'm out $60 just to walk in the door. Add some popcorn and drinks and we're at $75 for a freaking movie!

When 3D started you had a choice. You could go to the regular show or the 3D show. Now that they've gotten everyone conditioned to pay a few bucks more per ticket they're taking the choice away as well. I have 2 theaters in driving distance and I haven't been able to see any of the movies I'm interested in because they aren't offered at all in normal theaters.

Did I mention 3D sucks 90% of the time? Yes, Avatar was awesome in 3D and Tron probably will be too. But your average kids movie doesn't need it. I hate the glasses, my youngest kid can't keep them on the entire movie, it gives my wife a headache. I also think the picture isn't as good, when wearing the glasses it's not as bright and clear, 3D ruined UP in my opinion. It's a miserable experience and only worth it for a few specific types of movies.

So here is my choice. $75 to go out and see a movie in an environment that annoys me before it even starts and I get a bucket of crappy popcorn with butter flavored WD40 applied to it.

or

I can Redbox the movie for $1, pop my own for probably 25 cents (with real butter), and watch the movie on my 50" plasma and Onkyo surround system. I just have to wait a couple months for the movie to come out.

I'm done. I'll still take my wife out to a movie now and then and I'll go out and watch a flick here or there that I want to see on the big screen, but for the most part I'm through spending 60x the amount of money to watch the same movie just so I can do it on a bigger screen with a bunch of strangers.

Maybe my kids will be upset, but when I explain to them that we can skip the next 4 movies and buy an XBox with Kinect with the same money, I think they'll be on my side.

I can't believe i'm the only one.

Rant Over....

There aren't many movies that I care to see in the theater anymore, and that's a major reason why. I completely agree that 3D is appropriate only for certain types of movies. Unless it's something I really can't wait to see at home, there's no way I'm spending what they're asking for now.

I think the theaters are starting to feel a similar effect that the NFL is - the technology is getting too good and people are going to start choosing to stay at home if they have a decent setup.

Personally, if done right, 3D coudl be great, but too many of the movies are just using it after the fact to throw some 3D scenes into a 2D movie and it looks like ####.

It gives me a headache. the glasses don't sit well over my glasses. The directors spend too much emphasis on having stuff come at you such that it feels forced.

Time marches on and dinsoaurs like me get left behind, or so it seems. Actually I choose to remain behind.

I'm the opposite, 3D is really the only reason that I will pony up the money to see something in the theaters anymore. It is too easy to save money via bootleg or waiting for a movie to come to RedBox, going to the theater only adds value to me when it gives me an experience I can't get sitting on the couch watching it on my Bravia. :lmao:

I think the theaters are starting to feel a similar effect that the NFL is - the technology is getting too good and people are going to start choosing to stay at home if they have a decent setup.
:lmao: Exactly. Even if theaters were completely free, I'd still strongly prefer to watch most movies on my setup at home on my own schedule with a drink in my hand instead of having to go somewhere at a particular time to jostle for seats with people who insist on texting and talking througout the movie. Our local theater would have to pay me to get me to attend their showings. The fact that they actually try to charge me $8+ per ticket is laughable.

I used to see 8-10 movies a year in theaters. Kids + home theater and now if I see 1 movie it's an accident.

The trailers just slay me. 25 minutes of my life sucked away with that crap.

I don't go to the movies because of people. I don't like the 3D either, if I have the choice I see the 2D, my daughter hates the 3D :lmao:

Yep, the behavior of other people in theatres is what keeps me home. I have a good friend who owns two theatres, a first run and a second run. The first run is only $6, and his concessions are about half off what the major theatres charge (he's got an old building that isn't stadium seating, hence the ability to knock down the prices). I always go to his theatres when I see a movie, so the prices aren't an issue for me. However, I cannot remember the last time I saw a movie there and didn't regret it. I will only see kids movies at a theatre because my expectations for others' is so much lower. I expect the kids to talk, or kick seats, or whatever, but when adults do it, I cannot enjoy the movie.

Yeah, it's totally ridiculous. Especially with the behavior of most people at a theater these days. There is a theater here in South Jersey that doesn't allow anyone under 18 in. It doesn't show action movies much and some of it is independent schlock that I don't care to see, but it's a very nice atmosphere to see a movie in. It's about the only way I'll go see a movie these days.

I'd much rather pop in a BluRay and watch it on my HDTV or my 100" projector.

Other people are an issue too.

I told my wife you could make a mint if you opened a theater with a few zero tolerance policies.

Monitor the theaters closely. If a screen lights up during the movie you're gone, if you are talking during the movie you're gone, no kids under 18 allowed at R movies at all after 5pm, even with adults. Obviously you would lose some patrons but I think your gain would far outweigh your loss. That would be the only theater my wife and I would ever go to without our kids.

I expect kids to be loud and act like kids at PG and G movies. When a big movie opens it can even be fun and add to the enjoyment. It's when my wife and I get away once in a while by ourselves and we're trying to enjoy a flick but someone's kid is crying or a group of obnoxious teens gets loud or the moron with the iPhone has to tweet his movie experience in front of me.

I actually love going to the movies. Between my wife and I going to the movies, taking the kids to the new kid movie of the month, and catching a movie by ourselves every once in a while I would say my family probably would go to the movies on average once a week. We're down to probably once a month now and with the whole 3D debacle I think that's going to plummet. There are probably less than a half dozen movies at most that I REALLY look forward to each year and they'll probably be the only ones I bother going to the theater for.

Saw Tron Legacy in 3D as a trial and it will be our last 3D film. Really unimpressive (the 3D, not the movie)

There's a video rental store down the street from me that is probably bigger than a large Blockbuster. They start selling off their movies a few weeks after they come out on video and a month or two after that they get greatly reduced. You can get just about any new release for $2.50-$5.00. I much prefer that than spending $75 to go out to the movies.

I also only go to movies anymore to see 3D, and maybe the occasional blockbuster action movie. I like 3D but they are killing it by charging a $5 premium and just throwing 3D into every movie they can to get away charging people for. There's going to be a backlash and I expect them to either eliminate the 3D surcharge completely or reduce it to something nominal like $1. 3D isn't going away, but studios need to realize that it's not just a gimmick to get more money out people.

my AMC has $5 movies on weekdays.

I think if you pick a time during the week to go, after a movie has been out 3-4 weeks so you're not walking into a crowded theater, that you'll have a fine experience.

Or don't goto a theater in the burbs.

If i goto the theater at my local casino I'm good to go.

Regardless of how nice my setup is, it's not as good as the huge big screen.

Take a flask with you, buy a $5 coke, turn it into a whiskey/rum and coke, and enjoy the movie.

And I like 3d movies.

but I can totally understand as a parent not wanting to take your kid to the hyped up 3d prices on a weekend

It has nothing to do with 3D, more with having more time now that my kids are getting older. I have been to move movies since the RealD has come out then I did in the previous 6 years combined.

The 3D/RealD doesn't bother me. I don't think it adds a great deal, but sometimes when done right I think it is great, otherwise it is just the same as 2D for me. The wife has worse vision then me and has a hard time with 3D, so when we can we try to hit a 2D version of the movie.

Tron 3D was fine for her and I thought it didn't add too much to the movie, but didn't take away all that much either. We saw Harry Potter in 2D and it was fine too, but saw Narnia III in 2D and it was a pretty crappy picture.

My view on 3D is that it is just a way for them to charge you more, I don't get too much out of it at the theatre, but am looking forward to better adoption of it in the home, especially for gaming.

I'm not done going to all movies but I agree that the 3D movies in general are a bad idea. I don't like it.

The local AMC has $6 first showing on Saturdays. However, the last couple Saturdays all the kids movies were in 3D, so you have to add $4 to the price. Unless I wanted to endure Yogi bear, it's $10 per ticket.

For the past 5+ years we've gone to maybe 2 a year, with some years going to no movies. The only non-3D movie we've gone to in the last couple years was Harry Potter. The reasons are already mentioned but for us the key is the cost, the fact that our kids can run around the house if they get bored with a movie or we can just stop the movie and come back to it. 3D is a niche which is way overdone, so we probably won't be going to too many more. It's still a decent experience but a couple times a year is plenty.

If the price for a movie was the same as a 3-D feature ticket, but included surcharges for the ability to select your seat at purchase time and staffed theaters to remove offensive patrons, would you still pay the same price?

I haven't seen a movie in the theater since Princess and the Frog and didn't see one for 2 years before that. I did want to see Avatar in 3D, but never got around to it. I have the same sentiments about 3D technology as a lot of you that have posted in here. During my last trip my eye doc, he mentioned that the 3D technology was bad for the eyes, especially for children under 10 (who most of the 3D films seem to be marketed toward). I'm sure Mad Cow can confirm and explain more about that, since that's his field.

Also, I have to agree that I haven't seen much worth seeing going out to see in the theater. The movies cost less to own on DVD/BluRay than they do to pay for 2 tickets, so for a movie I'm seriously interested in, I'd rather wait and buy the movie (ex. Toy Story 3). Usually, I just rent, though.

Note: 10 years ago, I used to sometimes see 6-8 movies a month in a theater.

Very :goodposting: We go to maybe 4-6 movies a year max and maybe 2 of them we take or 6 year old son. Some years we see maybe 2-3. Maybe. It is a ripoff of epic proportions. We wait for Blueray and watch it on our 50' plasma in the comfort and most importantly slience of our home.Home Theater is the bomb.

It's impossible to justify going to the theater on a regular basis when one ticket costs as much as a month's worth of Netflix.

Other people are an issue too.I told my wife you could make a mint if you opened a theater with a few zero tolerance policies.Monitor the theaters closely. If a screen lights up during the movie you're gone,
 What are they supposed to show the movie on?

Movies like this are the exception for me. With Netflix, HDMI, and my set up, going to the movies is a waste unless it's something like Avatar or Independence Day that really does better on the huge screen or a 10/10 comedy like the Hangover that is better in a theater atmosphere.

I am not a fan of the 3D movies and my wife/kids do not like it at all. I will be glad when it dies off and goes away.

That being said, when my wife and I can sneak away for a day, we will usually go see a horror movie or two a year. Otherwise, it is 3-4 kids movies and that is it.

I hate the theaters. I hate the prices. The costs of popcporn and candy. The lack of alcohol and good food. The people, their cell phones, the talking and constant kicking of my chair.

I have spent good money on my home theather set up and I can gladly wait the 90 days or so to not have to go through this.

I happen to work from home (as does my wife) and movies have been my "release". I would say, I see roughly 30+ movies (in the theatre) per year. I go to a small "mom and pop" shop, where for $13.50, I can get a ticket and a 20 oz. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale...and spend time by myself. I look forward to it each week, and specifically go to a "non-3-D theatre"...they literally cannot do it. Saves me money and the headache of whacky crap flying at me.

From a true movie-goer's standpoint, it also allows me to see the movie in its purest form. Only movie I have seen in 3-D in the past 25 years was Pirannah (before that was Jaws-3D)...both were great in that form, but it was because both were supposed to be "campy"...ask Cam Crow whether Avatar was supposed to be "campy" and I am sure you would get a lecture on how it was "supposed to relate to the Middle east invasion, the environment and how cool it would be to tap a blue chick"...

Well ahead of ya.... I've been to 2 movies in the past 5 years.

Almost done with the big screen projector....

I can't stand 3D and I don't get the allure for the home either. Makes me nausious just thinking about 3D.

I disagree with the blanket bashing of 3D. When used properly, like in Avatar, it's well worth the trip and expense.
Agree 100%, but that's one movie out of the dozens that came out since then. People need to pony up and shoot it in 3D or don't bother.

Right now it's an obvious money grab for the cinemas, but in about 5 years all of our TVs/cable channels will be 3D equipped. This is a trend that isn't going anywhere soon. Hopefully it gets executed better more consistently.

I hate when I show up at a movie that's supposed to be $5 and try to charge me $8. I just go home when that happens.

Never seen a 3D movie and have no desire to. I never understood the fascination people have with 3D, specifically adults.

I'm sorry, sir, I will get off your lawn.
I'm <35 years old. 3D just seems childish to me :goodposting:
Agreed. And whose idea was it to bring in these talkies anyway?
color! who needs it?
Moving pictures! who needs it? Where's the imagination. Radio is all you need. My favorite is picturing that the guy on the radio is some weird looking homeless dude.

One drawback to not going to the theater is that your kids will be able to relate just a little bit less to their peers. While your kids classmates are all talking about the big movie they saw last friday, your kids have to sit out of that conversation. They'll see it in 6 months, but by then its too late.

I dread getting as old and grumpy as some of you guys. For the most part the 3D movies would be #### in 2D, and the reason some of you hate going to the movies is because you are being forced to see Yogi Bear or Alvin and the Chipmunks. I see at least a movie a month (rarely 3D) and love the experience.

I agree with the OP. I can RedBox a movie for $1 and eat/drink whatever I want in the comfort of my own home, nobody there to talk/text/tweet during the movie, nobody kicks the back of my couch, and I can have as many people come over as I want, or watch it myself, all for the same $1. There hasn't been one single movie in the last 10 years I can think of that I couldn't wait for on DVD. People kill me when they say "Oh man, XXXXXXX is coming out this weekend, I HAVE to go see it." No you don't...your life will still be the same in 3 months when it hits DVD...
