I'm thinking about paying decent money (1 Viewer)

I have never owned a pet. I went to the pet store looking for a kitten for the family, and was handed a ragdoll kitten. This little guy was incredibly calm and I figured he'd be perfect. Apparently the name comes from how they go limp when you pick them up. I asked how much and was told $700. I assumed most kittens were cheap, if not free. I initially scoffed but was already pretty attached. I checked the classifieds for free kittens and there wasn't much there. Then I googled ragdoll cats and they're awesome. Calm, affectionate and not a lot of shedding.

I'm definitely leaning towards buying the little dude. Anyone here ever own a ragdoll.

This is kooky. I'll send you two cats that just lie around and don't do #### all day for free. Hell, I'll even cover the shipping.

Don't buy the cat from a "pet store". Do a little resaerch and find a reputable breeder. Pet store animals don't tend to be as healthy/robust as you'll find at a reputable breeder.

Ragdolls are awesome cats. We have two of them, and yes, they are typically that expensive. :bag: Granted, my wife already owned one of them before we got together, and the second one is a rescue. They are very friendly cats who never meet a stranger. They're great with kids to the point where we have to make sure our 3 year old isn't being too rough with them. I would recommend having another cat (doesn't have to be a ragdoll) as ragdolls have quite a bit of energy and love to play. The only negative I would say is that the shedding isn't completely nonexistent. If you're more attached to the breed than that particular cat at the store, look around for a ragdoll rescue group in your area.

Personally, I wouldn't pay that much for a cat. I'd just go with a rescue. But if that's what you're looking for and you already seem to have a bond with it, it's not too crazy of a price. Seems like a cool cat with some great qualities.

I have two that I've been trying to find a home for 6 months now. As of Thursday they go to the Humane Society. Son with asthma/allergies takes priority. I'm guessing that most shelters have a ton of nice cats waiting to be adopted. That's where we originally got ours. I would always recommend that over paying $700.

I could understand someone getting a purebred dog.

I hate to be that guy, but getting a purebred cat from a store might be unconscionable.

As bad as the dog overpopulation problem is, the cat problem is much, much worse. Most shelters are going to have to kill 95-97% of the cats that come in.

Thanks to this thread I now realize that my cat must be a Ragdoll cross. We bought him from some farm north of Edmonton but based on the description of Ragdolls from wiki there is no doubt my cat has a lot of Ragdoll in him. The only thing missing is the blue eyes. He displays every other characteristic.

To the OP you won't regret having a Ragdoll. Just be certain you like having him around ALL the time. My cat rarely likes to be alone and that seems to echo the Ragdoll wiki page.

You're just trying to make me feel bad, aren't you?

Pretty sure he is completely serious.

I feel sorry for male cat owners. I really do. Means they live with dominating estrogen imposing their will. Only plausible excuse.

I have cats because I like cats. Always have. Brought my first one home when I was 5. Named him Snoopy. I also like dogs and have had several great ones. Partial to dobermans. If I had the room I would have both but a small apt is no place for a dog IMO.

wow...somebody has a case of the insecures.

Seeing how much my GF has plopped down in the last year on her aging cats (vet visits, special foods, medicines), I would recommend going the inexpensive route.

Sounds like an awesome breed though

From Wikipeida about the breeder that founded the breed:

Baker believed that Josephine was subject to a secret government genetic experiment during treatment at the lab, and claimed that it made Josephine docile, relaxed when picked up, and immune to pain.
:excited:

I like cats because you can love them, feed them, and shelter them and they still think you should #### off. I can appreciate an animal like that.

Plus they are quite usefull. This summer we had an annoying little chipmunk that would chirp outside our bedroom window as soon as the sun came up. One Sunday it was quite annoying as I was hungover trying to get some sleep. I let our cat out and when I woke up our cat was on our deck scratching at the door, with a dead chipmunk in her mouth. Didn't hear anymore chirping after that.

Exactly. If he was in the NFL he'd throw a fit about wearing pink gloves during Breast Cancer awareness month.
Sorry, dogs I've owned don't jump up on the kitchen island and put their 9 Lives whiskers in every food dish and then trek back to the litter box. One of my biggest rants on earth. More against blind cat owners than the varmints themselves. Cat are great at catching mice. If you've got a mice problem, go for it. Or get them f'd up on catnip and watch them bounce into walls. Otherwise I don't get the allure.

How many blind people do you know?

Cat expert here. This isn't as crazy as it sounds. My mom loves cats so growing up they were always around, both inside and outside (small farm). She never paid anything for them. These cats are so hit and miss. Most were insane and just a few were awesome. A cat that doesn't freak out every few minutes is nice to have around.

I'd pay good money for a cool cat.
