Buying expensive earbuds is like buying an expensive hdmi cable. You are better served listening to lossless audio if sound quality is that important to you. There are only a few apps that actually play lossless, and I'm pretty sure it's impossible on a locked iphone.

I had monster earbuds and they weren't any better than sub $10 sony/panasonic. I prefer the Sony, but own both.
Couldn't disagree more. Perhaps YMMV, but taking the Signal from the source and actually creating audible sound waves is a hell of a task and a better speaker will give off better sound.
I would agree for speakers or over ear headphones, but I haven't ever been able to notice much difference with earbuds. I have had a mid-range monster pair, and tried out my cousins bose. To me the sub $10 sony / panny are just as good.
I think a big factor is the listening environment. When I use my earbuds it's usually out in a noisy listening environment and I agree with you that a $6 panasonics sound almost as good as any earbud I've tried when in that type of environment. When you are sitting at home in a quiet environment I absolutely think you can tell the difference between the high end earbuds and the lossless encoding of the music. With 32gb microSD cards @$15 there's really no reason to listen to music that isn't encoded at the highest quality possible.

Probably because Monster is overrated. I have a pair of Beats (Monster) earbuds that came with my Rezound. Just got some Klipsch S4's and the difference is more than noticeable. The "cool" Beats are going to my daughter.

So are the S4's the answer here? Seems to fit the general consensus, no? Anybody got a knock on them (besides fit)?

I like them. Fit is nice (3 sizes of earpieces). Noise isolation good. Sound is very good. The linked S4's are the "reference" version. Supposed to be a little better than the "image" version but there are some complaints (amaazon reviews) about the wiring being stiff and transmitting noise to the ear when they rub on clothing. Since I use mine in the gym I went with image.

I have these and am really happy with them. I tried many for mowing, and these were the first that weren't overpowered by the noise of the lawnmower. I actually clicked on the link above that the poster claimed were for $39 and it said they were $99  . I was going to buy another pair.

They were $38 there. Temporary sale. Amazon has them for $40.

Never understood paying a lot for headphones, especially earbuds. At least from my experience, they malfunction/break surprisingly easily, and typically when I wear them, Im doing something else (working out, errands, etc) Im using them not for sound quality but just to give me music.
I agree. So I started looking for something that was sturdier. The reviews for the klipsch are good but based on the reviews they seem like they'd malfunction/break. I want to spend less then $40 - was looking at the brainwavz since the cable looks durable. Anyone have any opinion on these? or something similar?

If you can get a phenomenal pair like the Klipsch S4 for $45 why would you get an inferior pair for ~$30? Seems silly to me. The S4s are phenomenal. Flying with them this weekend was a pleasure... I was over the wing on Exit row seating (usually kinda loud) but with them in and playing I couldn't ear the plane noise at all. Super tight/clean low end with very crisp detailed highs. Easily the best headphones I've ever used.

Have to second this. If you don't hear ANY difference, sure, save 15 bucks. But it doesn't take a musician's ear to hear the difference in quality.

I was looking at the Brainwavz because they looked more durable - they have a braided wire. For me lately it seems like charging cables and headphone cables don't seem to hold up very long. How long have you had the klipsch? Will they hold up for more than a year?

Are these new Quietcomfort In-Ear Noise Cancelling headphones from Bose ground-breaking?

Anyone tried them and found them as effective as the larger versions?

http://www.amazon.com/Bose-QuietComfort-Acoustic-Cancelling-Headphones/dp/B00D429Y12/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1400262082&sr=8-2&keywords=amazon+bose+headphones
Nothing from Bose is groundbreaking.
Any other in-ear noise cancelling that look good? I see Sony has a pair...look pretty cheap.

Has anyone tried in-ear noise cancelling?

Bose is good at one thing and one thing only. EQing their products so they are enjoyed by the masses. It's groundbreaking from a business standpoint I suppose.
