In praise of Brees' monster TD production (1 Viewer)

I was mucking around with some stats today and I noticed that Brees needs only 12 more touchdowns this season to break Favre's record 176 TDs over a 5 year span (1994-1998). Brees actually came up one shy of the record last year, when he finished 2007-2011 with 175 TDs. Those are some insane numbers, and as much praise as Brees gets, I'm not sure it's enough.

Manning came close from 2003-2007 with 168 TDs. Brady's missed season likely killed his chances, his peak is currently 153 from 2007-2011. Rodgers is sitting at 150 for 2004-2012, so he will probably need another year or two at his current level of play to have a shot at the 180+ that Brees is likely to record.

That's a really interesting find. If you'd asked me who had the most TDs over a 5 year span, I would have been floored if it wasn't Peyton, and wouldn't have pegged Brees in the top 5. Obviously the 5-year window is arbitrary (eliminates Warner and Brady, among others), but that's still a very interesting find.

Easily? Aside from his 45 TDs last year, Rodger's next best is 30 TDs in a season back in 2009. He has 28 in both 2008 and 2010. Obviously not bad numbers, but nowhere near record breaking and I'd argue he's very unlikely to surpass this in a couple years, let alone easily. For comparison, Brees hasn't had fewer than 33 TDs since 2007, and he still threw 28 that year. His totals have been 48, 33, 34, and 34 over the last 4 years and he's already at 18 after just 6 games (on pace for 48 again). Rodgers is an amazing QB who is going to break some records when it's all said and done, but this isn't one that he's a shoe-in for by any stretch, IMO.

Given that Rodgers is 5 years younger than Brees and appears to be now truly hitting his performance peak, I don't think projecting Rodgers for anywhere from 35 td's + over the next 2 to 3 seasons is a stretch by any estimate.

I love watching Brees play. I was a big fan of his at Purdue, liked him in San Diego and love watching him play for the Saints. Plus, he seems to be a genuinely great guy. Very easy to root for.

Brees is still consistently the best QB in FF.
