~~ In-Season Team Projection and Tracking Tool ~~ UPDATED W6 (1 Viewer)

NatronIsMean

Footballguy
My team tracker has been updated in multiple areas and is now available for download with the latest data through week 6:

http://home.comcast.net/~n8a/NatronTracker_v1.8_-_2006.xls

If you're interested, download and enter information in the columns with light blue headings of the Weekly Tracker tab.

NOTE: Don't edit other worksheets or fields unless you know how to work with the formulas. Also, don't edit data in the "PlayersList" tab, which is the raw SportsLine data.

This tracks for each of your players:

1. Average points against for each matchup - tailored to each position. For instance, when you type in Larry Johnson in the Player field, his entire schedule populates with his opponents and how many points they give up to RBs on average. It has been updated to now include how many points are given up to defenses by each offense!

2. Projected weekly average score

3. Actual weekly average score

4. Weekly score per player in your league

5. Your total bench and starter scores per week (you have to enter a "S" and "B" for those players in the weekly stats section).

6. Each player's overall fantasy rank and rank per position

7. A slew of other data

BENEFITS:

Some (maybe most) of you may not about this, but it has proven useful for tracking trends, looking at Free Agents (automatically shows their schedule and production to date, week by week), and it allows you to view playoff schedules.

Here's a look:

Which team are you getting APA (ave. points against) and Rk (rank) errors for?

Also, I should have mentioned:

When adding players in the Player column (column B), they must be the exact player name in the format Last Name, First Name. As mine are:

Cobbs, Cedric

McNair, Steve

For defenses, you must enter the name of the mascot:

Buccaneers

Vikings

All fields should populate correctly then. If you get errors, check that you didn't put any spaces in and let me know the players you are trying to enter and I'll check the error myself.

Thanks for trying it out!

Maybe it's me, but when I click on the player tab, it will not allow me to change anything. I can't type over it or anything.

anyone else having this problem?

And I'm getting error for all teams listed.

Deuce's - You don't want to change any data in the PlayersList tab - that is the raw data from Sportsline.

You want to edit the 'Player' column on the first tab, tab 'Weekly Tracker'. Replace the players that I have (Drew Bledsoe, etc.) with your players.

Also, check to make sure that it's not a read only file when you downloaded it (it shouldn't be). Right-click, properties, uncheck Read Only if it is checked.

I know what the problem is....I had a trial version of excel on my new laptop. I'm downloading it now. Should work afterwards.

I've never known WTF that smiley means...!
Threads that you've posted in are marked with a black dot. Sometimes people will post something small in a thread just so they can have that thread marked to make it easier to find. People used to type "black dot" or do something like .. So, now we have a smiley holding the image of a thread marker with a black dot.

Thanks for explaining the . and the camera guy - makes sense guys.

This is awesome, thanks for putting it together, where do the data loads come from?

This is awesome, thanks for putting it together, where do the data loads come from?
Thanks a lot - again, let me know how it can be improved--The data loads:

Player Info (name, stats, projections): Sportsline (my service).

Average Points Against per position: http://www.askthecommish.com/pointsallowed/

I'd be open to other stats that could be tracked as well.

This can be easily adapted to another scoring/stat system as well and I'd be happy to help. The tricky part is easily getting the raw data from a service. Yahoo used to provide text files which were great to use, but stopped. You can get the player data from Sportsline relatively easily, but I don't know about the other services.

Comments from another board that are relevant: In case anyone is curious as to the (perceived) benefits and why I created this:

Again, any thoughts/comments very appreciated.

1. When you plug in your players and free agents, you start to see good matchups. This really helps me in season to select Free Agents - if you're deciding between two guys on the waiver wire (lets say Kevin Curtis and Matt Jones last year), you can look at both with this to visualy see where you're going to need spot starts due to BYEs, bad matchups, etc.

One key here is to review playoff matchups. To make all the matchups more effective, this spreadsheet starts to really help in weeks 4-10, when the Average Points Against data for defenses start to show the real schedule soft-spots and the valuable free agents start really showing themselves.

2. In addition to schedule review, you start entering weekly performances. This helps you see your player performance (vs projected), as well as each player's (free agents) performance week to week. This helps you see who is consistent when you're looking at a Free Agent in week 8 and want to know how/where their points were spread out.

3. It hasn't been built-in yet (will be after week one), but in the "Sts" column, you put a B or S to indicate who is bench and who is starter, and it will record on the bottom what your bench and starter totals are each week.

4. Finally, it'll allow you to keep a record of your team for 2006. Not a big deal, but when you want to look back at your team, you'll have a record of how they performed every week for the year. Good for nostalgia, in theory.

So, to get a new set of stats, we download a new spreadsheet each week? or is there some sort of loading routine?Sorry :whoosh:

Yeah, this is the messy part. Every week it needs new player stats and Defense APA. Here are the possibilities:1) I learn how (or someone help) to get the spreadsheet to retrieve data on its own each week.

2) I upload a new version to the exact same download location each week Tuesday morning. You'd have to copy over your players and any Free Agents you're evaluating (or retype them; this should be quick and easy).

3) I communicate how everyone can get the stats on their own and everyone does it themselves.

Obviously, I want to get to #1 above, but don't currently have the know-how in terms of automating a web site query via Excel macros. We'll see - I'm working on it...

As a note, I'll be in Greece on honeymoon for two weeks in September, so data loads may suffer. However, I'll try to find a replacement. At any rate, the 2006 data will become most useful after the first 3-4 weeks anyway, so it shouldn't be too much of an inconvenience.

So where are you doing the calculations that take the stats and convert them into projected points ?

I don't see anywhere where I can actually try to modify those numbers so that it matches the scoring system that my league is running ?

Pretty sweet...I just want to peek and poke to see what's under the hood to taylor it to my situation..that's all

Thanks for posting this !!

for some reason it pulls the 49ers for all seattle players. seems that it uses the 2nd part of the or statement for some reason and takes it from the schedule rather than the player page.....

Thanks for the question - The league projections are based on the last column of the tabs PlayersList, DefenseList, and KickersList. I would *encourage* you to change the formula to match your scoring system, so thanks for the question! Just edit the formula in the first player cell, then drag that cell all the to the bottom of the list to replace my scoring system with yours. If you need help with that, just let me know.As a note, I didn't really play with the Kicker and Defense projection formula yet since I've been focused on other things, but it should be easy.

You're right - nice bug find! I fixed it and uploaded the fixed spreadsheet to the initial post. The fix was just a data issue in the "Schedule" tab - it said 49ers for SEA and Seahawks for SF... whoops!

Very nice, thanks! But like Snapperhead asked, can it be altered to fit a particular scoring system? Also, do you know where data for return yards can be gotten?

Edit - because you already answered my question about scoring systems.

In each of the tabs PlayerList, KickerList, and DefenseList, you'll find a column called "FPTS". What you need to do is modify the cell to a fomula (it's already a formula in the PlayerList tab) so that you can modify the points total to fit your league scoring. As a quick example, here's my PlayerList FPTS formula (column U, the 2nd FPTS column, since I left Sportsline's totals there for reference):=(G3*0.04 + H3*4 + I3*-2 + L3*0.1 + N3*6 + P3*0.1+ R3*6 + S3*-2 + O3*0.5)This stands for: Passing Yards * .04 (25 yards = 1 pt)+Passing TDs * 4 (Passing TD = 4 pts)+ Passing INTs * -2 (Lose 2 points per INT)+Rushing Yards * .1 (10 yards = 1 pt)+Rushing TDs * 6 (Rushing TD = 6 pts)+ Receiving Yards * .1 (10 yards = 1 pt)+Receiving TDs * 6 (Rushing TD = 6 pts)+ Fumbles * -2 (Lose 2 points per Fumble)+ Reception * .5 (Earn half-point per reception)Hopefully that helps everyone - the kicker and defense totals may be more difficult; I'll have to work on those formulas when I have the chance, but I'm heading to a wedding in NYC today...

Bump for update with week 6 data. Just put your players where mine are and ~presto~

Note: Descriptions and instruction are below the player entry section.
