In this thread I rank my favorite Beatles songs: 204-1. (6 Viewers)

In context I think it’s a strong possibility.  They hadn’t done anything yet at the time.  Love Me Do was a modest chart success but nothing exciting.  Martin wasn’t yet sold on their prowess as songwriters and he and the label could have hardlined it and insisted they put it out.  You can hear a snippet of the Beatles version in the clip, and unlike the Pacemakers version which is solid, it lacked....something.  Passion?  Energy?  Effort?  They clearly weren’t into the song, and were absolutely concerned about it damaging their image (they said as much) and it comes across in the recording.

Could it have gone #1 like Martin thought?  Probably - he would certainly know better than me, though I’m still a bit skeptical.  But then let’s say it does go #1.  Is Martin then emboldened to find other standard cookie cutter “hits” for them to record as singles instead of their own stuff?

Bottom line: They were so freaking talented they likely overcome it but it’s a fickle industry so you can’t say for sure.  I think at best it delays their careers from going supernova exactly when it did and maybe affects people’s first impressions of them.  Definitely an interesting “what if?”
Great posting.  I agree with you.

Wyy does this come up all the time on my Youtube random play?

He loves all the songs Krista doesn't
This is a super-sexy John vocal.  I don't know if I pointed that out before.  Official request for a @Nipsey cover next time he’s doing them, if it's available.

Take a bow Rock!

All the remaining songs appeared on at least two lists.
Hmph.  Well, OK.

There is so much to react to here, after going most of the weekend without being able to check in on this thread.

- All the songs that I put in my top 25 that have already been listed are way better than their composite ranking and the rest of you don't know what you're talking about.

- If "Fool on the Hill" or "Rocky Raccoon" would have been higher, I might have quit the thread.

- After looking at the songs listed thus far, I think it would have made all of our lives just a little bit easier if we were allowed to put 53 songs in our top 25.  It only makes sense.

Binky put 62 on his top 25.  True story.

117.  I Will (White Album, 1968)

Beatles version:  Spotify  YouTube

Beautiful and hummable, stuck-in-your-head song with a fabulous guitar line from Paul that sounds more George-like than George does.  Readers of my first post in this thread, which is none of you, will note my statement that I'm not sentimental or sappy.  As a result, this lovely song from the Paul McCartney automatic-song-generator gets high points for all of that plus its absolutely gorgeous harmonies but is docked compared to other songs due to its hokey lyrics:

Love you forever and forever
Love you with all my heart
Love you whenever we're together
Love you when we're apart.

:X

Mr. krista:  "THAT sounds like a song that was written in 1964.  It’s a lovely little Beatles tune.  They were in India when he wrote it so they were probably feeling particularly decent.  McCartney is best when he seems vulnerable."

Suggested cover:  Allison Krauss holy hell
This song required 67 takes. There is no bass guitar; what you think is the bass line is Paul doing a vocal bass.

Sorry. Went to bed wicked early last night. I am all over the past three pages of this thread. I can't even get the mid-to-early consensus correct.

:kicksrock:

Here's the story of my contribution to both the composite and the juxtaposition against Krista's rankings.

Baa baa, rock, you're going the wrong way... (NSFW for language reasons)

:lmao:

eta* You can tell I like the people in this thread; I even gave a NSFW for you all!

This is one of those tunes I like better in my mind but when I hear it it sounds like ####

Nice!  How was it?
It was groovy, he has an album called Rain that doesn't have a title track so he called this the title track and said he hopes the guys in this band don't mind that he changed the chords all around.  It was hard to recognize but sounded good.

I like going to shows like this where I look around and feel young.

I need some of those shows.  Looks like Joe Jackson was here 2/28.   :kicksrock:

It does sound like ####, but it sounds like Shakespeare when recited by Colin Quinn or whichever comic it was who made fun of it as the stoopitest lyric of all time

He's had some pretty terrible lyrics, consistently throughout his solo career.  I think I must have liked this song when I was a dumb kid, so there's a soft spot in there somewhere.  It wants to be good.  But it's gotten even harder to listen to, tbh.  Easier to sit through Temporary Secretary.  I'm sure that one's been hashed over.

I saw Joe Jackson the other night and he played RAIN
Speaking of Joe Jackson, is it just me, or is the beginning of "Breaking Us In Two" the exact same as Badfinger's "Day After Day"?  I heard it the other day on the Beatles Channel and I thought I skipped to the 80's channel instead.

I never noticed but absolutely

Has anybody ever not ripped these poor bastards off?

I sent my guess at the top 10 earlier and there were at least 30 songs that I thought must be in the top 10.  :loco:

I put Penny Lane at #10 just for Krista. :pokey:

I was on the road a lot this weekend and had Sirius 30 on as they play the top 1000 influential rock songs (or some such bull).  A number of Beatles tunes played and I wondered "where did K4 rate this one" to each. I'll probably always do that for every one I hear now.  Penny Lame was 90ish I believe.
