In this thread I rank my favorite Beatles songs: 204-1. (2 Viewers)

Have we covered the "Yesterday" movie in here yet? Just watched the trailer (Joe Bryant started a thread).
I usually avoid Joe’s threads due to poor titling, but someone did mention it in here.  Just watched the trailer.  I became skeptical of Danny Boyle due to Slumdog Millionaire, and the trailer gave me little reason to reconsider, but I’ll probably see it anyway.  The “Hey Dude” bit was good.

Really? I can see why, but I have to admit I liked both Slumdog Millionaire and this trailer.

Ah, it's all personal, anyway.

I’m probably predisposed to dislike this due to Slumdog, but I’ll try to give it a legit chance by reminding myself he directed Sunshine and Trainspotting.  I did see 127 Hours, which was fine.  When Slumdog came out it seemed made precisely for me, and instead I found it awful, so the disappointment heightened my antipathy.  Seems most people loved it, though.

Yeah, I dug the movie, IIRC. It's not like I watched it a bunch of times and have a love affair with it, but I enjoyed it. I'm curious, though: Why would would it seem to be in your sweet spot at first blush?

As for the bolded, an aside: I've had that happen, generally with music. There are few things that get my critical dander up more than a band that is getting positive reviews two records too late and the current record -- the one being reviewed positively -- isn't very good. It's like, why not just say one missed the boat on the others and direct listeners back to the good ones? Anyway, I digress a bit...

It’s ok; I started the digression.  In the early/mid 00s I had a strong interest in Indian movies.  Ate ‘em up.  Then this came out and added to this theme a director many of whose prior works I’d loved, as well as the screenwriter of The Full Monty, which I also loved, and I was super excited for it.

I'm with Krista on this ranking..... sorry GB MOCS
No problumbo.

It will just inspire me to be extra convincing in my commentary.  :grad:

Top 13 list plz.
Shaft41's Favorite 13 Things In Beatles Songs As Of This Very Moment Which Could Darn Well Possibly Change Anytime, Really As Soon As Tonight, Listed In No Particular Order Because I'm Not Daft Enough To Try And Rank Things:

1.  The piano solo in "In My Life", particularly the last measure where George Martin gets in 13 more notes than thought humanly possible.  I distinctly remember someone recently saying that that was precisely what they DIDN'T like about the solo, but that person is wrong.

2.  The impossibly fast bass line on what I think might be the second or third verse of "Taxman"

3.  The eight notes on the words "But tomorrow may rain so-o" right before "I'll Follow the Sun."

4.  The harmony on the lines "Someday when I'm dreaming, wishing you weren't so far away" on "Things We Said Today".  The only problem is that these harmonies are so sublime and perfect that I can never decide which part I want to sing along to when I hear it, so I end up skipping back and forth between.

5.  The enunciation on the "d" in the line "That's the end(uh), little girl" on "Run For Your Life."

6.  The triple harmonies in "Because".  I'm a sucker for harmonies.  They make literally any song at minimum 32% better.  These are some of the best, particularly that highest part when they say "rou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ou-ound."   And, as Krista told the three of us who read her posts, these were triple-tracked (which is a really fun phrase to say quickly) to make it sound more like 9 voices.  I was dismayed that I was the only one to put this in my top 25.

7.  The only recorded use of the word "bailalaika" in a pop song in "Back in the U.S.S.R."

8.  Opening piano riff of "Hey Bulldog"

9.  The second time the french horn solo comes back in backing Paul's singing in "For No One."  Haunting.

10.  The four descending piano chords after the words "speaking words of wisdom, Let It Be", particularly when played expertly by my progeny.

11.  The discordant piano chords on "I Want To Tell You."

12.  Ringo yelling "I've got blisters on my fingers" at the end of "Helter Skelter."

13.  The very second the ####### flute stops in "Fool on the Hill."

Krista Rank -104

Krista and I had no idea what this would turn into when we started.  We discussed 10 and 25 song lists.  I pushed for 25 song lists because it would lead to better rankings,  but we were worried not many would respond at 25.   I was hoping to get ten of them and shoot for 20.   It's awesome that we got 35 lists!    Thank you! And still, because there are so many incredible songs like this one, 35 top 50 lists would have even been better. Sorry Binky for not doing that!

This is one of the first songs where the rank is not driven in a huge way by one or two people.  With a few exceptions, should be like that the rest of the way.

For me, to see the variance in all the lists and the 35 different levels/degrees in which we take in and appreciate music has been incredibly awesome. As I posted with Shuke earlier, I have no ability to play music, though my favorite class in college was the Classical Music Appreciation class I took.

Let me know the way....Classic

I was a little surprised this was so low on krista's list - but like I've said throughout this is a maddening exercise. Song 104 could be only a sliver worse than song 32. To speak in krista terms, It's equivalent of picking the cutest kitten out of a litter.

I just love the earnestness in Paul's voice and the non-traditional (rock) instruments backing up the piano. It's like a Disney princess song on steroids.

Love these in particular.

Now I kinda wanna do a list of these, too.   :bag:

The first sentence is what I love about this song.  The second is what I hate.

If I were making a list of favorite Beatles song moments, which I'm totally not going to do except maybe I will , the way he sings "you left me standing he-ah" might make the list.

It's a fun exercise.   Honestly, it probably makes me like the song as a whole better just because these individual moments are so awesome.  I recommend everyone do this.

Except you will.  And that's the only moment in that song I kind of like.

It's a moment that sounds intensely vulnerable.

And I might.  I'm missing my Beatles list-making.  When I was on tequila Sunday night I considered ranking the vocal performances of John, Paul, and George in each song where they sing lead.  Sorry, Ringo.

Man

The Beatles Channel can be a *******.  I get in to drive home from work and the first two tunes are in my top 5. I'm loving it. Then comes "If I Fell" which should be in my top 25, and includes a 14th moment I missed on my earlier list. What heights of joy will they take me to next? I'm tingling with anticipation...

"Day after day, alone on a hill...."

:(

Savage.

A couple of times in the past week when I’ve turned to Underground Garage because the Beatles channel was playing Rocky Raccoon or the flute song, I’ve gotten a Beatles song on UG. It’s the best feeling.  Like surprise bonus Beatles.

Well...bye.
How’s the 1000-song list coming along?  I’m unreasonably excited for it.

This thread has been awesome but it should be over already. It feels like Star Wars to me and we’ve reached the prequel stage. Getzlaf= JarJar.
hold the #### up tim.

this is coming from the absolute king of some of the longest, unnecessarily drawn-out, tim-judgemental-based threads in the history of this board.

sometimes you are such a giant ####.

why the need to dump on getz you putz?

if I could envision an analogy - you would be the toilet and getz would be taking a dump

Oh god, I was hoping everyone would have forgotten about it.  When you started this thread I found renewed commitment, bordering on obsession.  But it is a maddening task.  As of now I have roughly the top 200 in order.  I have another 900 artists/songs that I have sub-tiered, but the tiers get bigger as it goes down the list.  I'm thinking another 6 months?

I guess we have a Tier line here.....  we just jumped from 38 to 44 total points.    This is the last song to appear on only two lists.  There is only one more that appears on three lists.

This all kinda makes sense as a constant theme here is that almost all of us could change like #10/15 to #65, on any day.

I'm with Krista on this ranking..... sorry GB MOCS
you are ...WRONG!
