In this thread I rank my favorite post-Beatles Beatles songs: 291-1. (4 Viewers)

9.  Paul McCartney and Wings - My Love (Red Rose Speedway, 1973)  Spotify  YouTube

(Paul #4)

OK, I realize my "deep track" isn't really deep, but I was half joking and half trying to mislead, just as I misled @Pip's Invitation by telling him (via PM, I think) that this song wasn't going to be on my countdown.  I'm sorry, GB, and I hope you'll give it another shot.  It does have a great guitar solo and a dreamy Paul vocal!  But before you guys vomit, I did mention that I had a personal connection to this one.

When I was 17, I left home for a college (Wellesley) I'd never visited in a state I'd never seen.  I really was just this naive rube from southern Indiana, terribly shy and insecure.  In my first semester, I went to a party and saw a guy, Bob, that my friends and I all thought looked just like Tom Cruise.  We were gaga.  Being this shy thing who hadn't dated much, I had no reason to think he'd be interested in me, but he was!  We dated for my entire college career, and given that none of my other close friends had long-term boyfriends during that time, he was as central to our friend group as any of us.  After I moved to NY for law school, we tried to stay together for a bit, but it just didn't work out in the end.  We kept in touch now and then over the years, not as much as we should have, but we were friendly and I always thought the world of him.

In February 2019 I received an email from his BFF during college saying he needed to talk to me.  I immediately panicked, sure that Bob had had a heart attack because he was always high-strung.  But no - in fact, my fears were realized when I learned he had died, but not of a heart attack...of the flu.  The freaking flu.

When I was going into my junior year in college, my older brother got married, and of course Bob and I were at the wedding.  During the reception, we danced to this song, and Bob sung it softly in my ear.  (He was a terrible singer, by the way.)  After that, I always considered this "our song," but it only shot up my Paul rankings after Bob died and I recalled that time with him.  RIP Bob.
I was going to say I don't know you anymore, but after that writeup, I kind of do.

We dated for my entire college career,
holy #### ...

half-way through I had my response half written in my mind - poling you about having a "boyfriend in another state" (pretend) all through college

and then I didn't feel like going that direction at the end

great and personal story - the song is a little mushy ...but it's supposed to be.

10.  Lennon/Ono With The Plastic Ono Band - Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) (single, 1970)  Spotify  YouTube

(John #2)

For a person who complains a lot about Phil Spector, I sure do have a lot of his productions at the top of my favorites.  I guess that’s inevitable when he was so heavily involved in John’s and George’s early solo works.  I do hold a grudge against this song, though – his involvement in it directly led to his being brought in to the Let It Be sessions, where in my opinion he ruined a bunch of songs.

Setting aside my unreasonable notion that a composition could be responsible for actual human actions, this gets my vaunted #2 spot on the John list because it’s freaking awesome.  OK, maybe I can break it down better than that.  First of all, it’s AN ALAN WHITE SHOWCASE!  Hmmm, doesn’t have the same ring.  But that drumming is madness and not something I’d have expected from White based on my other knowledge of him (I don’t do Yes, so I’m talking about other Beatles collaborations).  Truly phenomenal.  I wouldn’t want to rank a song so highly, though, if it were dependent upon the contributions of a non-Beatle, and this isn’t.  John’s vocal is Twist-And-Shouty goodness, absolutely shredding it.  And although I don’t believe in karma, I think the lyrics are the most interesting of his overtly political tomes, with their tongue-in-cheek “get yourself together” criticisms combined with the optimism of “we all shine on” or the exhortation that we aren’t here to live in pain and fear.  It’s a decidedly positive and communal view of where we can go, unlike the more individual directives of, for instance, “Give Peace A Chance.”  In that sense, it’s more reassuring that if we all work together as one, we could accomplish something, though this idea was presented here in a less polished fashion than “Imagine.”  The more optimistic lyrics are complemented by the upbeat vocal and accompaniment – unlike many John songs of this vintage, he sounds like he’s having fun.

The backstory of this song is crazy, with John having gone from concept to composition to recording to release in…get this…10 days.  It reached #3 on the US charts and was the first “solo” Beatle recording to sell a million copies.  It wasn’t exactly solo, of course, since George played guitar and electric piano and provided backing vocals.  George and…everyone else on the planet.  In typical Spector-y fashion, a billion and one musicians were brought in to work on the track, from mainstays Voormann, White, and Preston, to a chorus of uncredited backing vocals that included awful-person Allen Klein.  To that Spector added his usual echo and reverb effects and wanted to add strings, too, but John deemed the song complete without them, thank goodness.  I believe strings would have detracted from the raw, primal nature of the song that makes it one of my top 10.

John and Yoko did a lot of promotion for this song.  They cut off their long hair and presented it to a Black power activist as some sort of signal of a “new beginning” for 1970.  And they did a series of TV performances of the song, including this little number that features Yoko soundlessly knitting with a Kotex pad taped to her face as a blindfold.
Glad you included the youtube clip of "Yoko's greatest ever performance evah."  I loving the drumming on this track as well...and seems John does too as he gives White a knowing wink/look at the 1:46 mark.  This would be my #1 John song.

Wow, am so sorry for your loss @krista4 thank you for sharing, very brave of you.

Thanks to you and everyone else for your kindness.  I forgot to mention, because the story got me awfully sad, that the version I've always thought of as "our song" was this bootleg rather than the released version, but due to my unnecessarily complicated rules I'm taking the official one.  You might enjoy this one a little more.

yeah, that's even better than the album version

@Pip's Invitation might even like this one.  but probably not

I guess we now know what your #1 John Lennon song will be. :)  I too love the vocals and this is one of my favorites as well.

What did Phil Spector do to ruin songs in the Let It Be sessions?

ADDED - I will look this up later. I remember reading something about this.
I'll try to catch up to it later but still have four songs to write up today.  When you read about it, make sure you see this hilarious snarky letter from Paul to Allen Klein.

I guess I'd better clear this up now, as some of you might be confused.

My post about "My Love" was 100% true, except...the song Bob and I danced to wasn't "My Love."  It was "Lady in Red," by Chris DeBurgh, and he sang "lady in blue" to me instead because I was wearing a blue bridesmaid dress.  Bob really did die last year, and it continues to shake me up.  Like I said, everything true but the song.

So why did I post it?  I was challenged by our GB @Morton Muffley last night to do something, and if I did, he would make some generous contributions to charity.  I'll let him fill in all the details.  Morton, my charity will be World Central Kitchen, the charitable organization of chef Jose Andres.  He's a person I admire more than nearly anyone else at the moment, and this charity has not only been actively involved in COVID relief recently but is also currently on the ground in Nicaragua due to the hurricanes.

My real Paul #4 is upcoming, and oddly enough it's from the same album as my faux #4.

That's too funny. I have heard the studio version of The Long and Winding Road and like it better without the orchestra/backup singers but don't think what I assume is the Spector produced version is bad. As an artist I can see why Paul would be upset if he had no control over the final output.

(Paul #4)

Setting aside all the earlier shenanigans, what I said last night is true, which is that I have one deeeeeep track in my top 10, and that it’s the only song in the countdown that makes its way on, and to a high ranking, due to a personal story behind it.

2020 has been hell on pretty much everyone, me included.  I’ve been lucky not to have suffered some of the effects of the pandemic that many have, such as lost jobs or lost loved ones, but the stress of it is enormous for all of us.  When you add to that that I filed for divorce in March, which was granted in June, lost one of my kitty buddies in September, and have now been in process of uprooting us to a new house shortly…well, it’s not been my favorite year.  Again, I do have it pretty good compared to many, so I haven’t lost sight of that.

Somewhere around the beginning of this year, I was playing around with my list of Paul songs and this one hit me as it hadn’t before.  It’s so beautiful, such a soothing lullaby.  And I started playing it every night before I went to bed, to try to ease myself into a better spot instead of the mind-racing-100-mph (kph?) that usually keeps me awake.  At times I’d play “Calico Skies,” too, but always always this one.  And still my mind would sometimes race, but sometimes it worked.  It just made me feel better.  It still does.  I love this song and its effect on me.

I’m not going to spend a lot of time extolling the musical virtues of the song, since it’s an emotional connection that makes it one of my favorites, but I also do think it’s a great song!  Paul’s vocal has to be considered one of his best ever, yes?  The harmonies/backing vocals are heavenly as well, and the guitars shimmer.  And it’s a cool little suite, like others I love so much where he put a few different musical ideas together to form this beautiful whole.  And just to make it even more touching to me, it’s fairly well accepted that the middle part – the “dragonfly” portion, which is by far my favorite – is about John and Paul’s love for him and hope for forgiveness/reconciliation.

Oh, also, I have only one tattoo, and it is a dragonfly.  They’ve always had a special meaning for me.

@Pip's Invitation Krista's story was so touching, but am sorry for your loss too!  People continue to surprise us.  Does anyone REALLY know anyone? I'm not as thoughtful/perceptive as @wikkidpissah but am sure he can find the words to navigate this
no one is as thoughtful/perceptive as @wikkidpissah, my boy - he was an AI project started @ CalTech in '08 by a 14yo West Covina computer savant named Regina Blalock. her parents asked her to retrieve the passwords/files of her recently-deceased uncle, a Hollywood drug dealer who'd ratted out most of his clientele after an FBI bust and had been reduced to selling quaaludes to surfers by the end. alongside Uncle Roger's financials, Regina found rambling notebooks of random reminiscences & theories. curious if she could bring this odd figure back to life, cybernetically, Regina wrote some programs, refined the concept w the help of her CalTech professors and, because fantasy football was 2nd only to latinachubbymature sites as his online passion, tested her work by creating a persona which responded on one of the FFB forum sites which indulged opinions outside fantasy sports.

Ms Blalock moved on to more advanced projects long ago. from what i can tell, i am the 7th programmer who oversees wikkidpissah's spontaneous online consumption & production - in order to determine the reactive array of any whom might respond to "his" output - for the company who bought the original project. HTH -

Yes, given my ongoing (and quite silly) competition to get Pip to click on a Spies Like Us link I offered Krista a modest amount of $ to her favorite charity if she would:

  • Name "My Love" as one of her top 10 Paul songs - knowing how adamant Pip has been about his hatred for this, at worst, meh song I thought I could get some enjoyment out of watching Pip squirm
  • Create a concealed link to Spies Like US - solely for Pip to click on.  A silly goal originally that has now become pathetic due to my competitiveness.  But I'll own that. :)
Krista did the rest.  She went above and beyond leveraging a real-life experience and turning it into her appreciation for My Love - just so I could get Pip to reflect and regret EVERYTHING he'd  ever written about My Love!  It's been wonderful. And I looking forward to making the donation to World Central Kitchen.  In addition, Krista insisted that Pip get something out of this little charade and so some of my promised charitable giving will be awarded to the charity of Pip's choice.  So lemme know where you want the $ sent Pip.

In conclusion, thanks for playing along Krista.  And, more importantly, condolences on the loss of your friend.

Sorry Pip and anyone else.  I was so distressed this morning, not because I would have to spend an hour (Morton's required time) with people thinking I loved "My Love," but because I hate lying.  More than perhaps anyone I know hates it.  So it made me feel like an awful person, which I only got over by reminding myself that Morton is donating a lot to charity.  An exceedingly generous amount.  Thanks for doing that.

I take back all the nice things I said this morning about the people in this thread.  Little did I know it was populated by a passel of rapscallions the likes of which "Be Excellent to Each Other" never applied.

Wow.  I did not expect this.   It's an excellent song and being a Paul fanboy I love it.

HOWEVER, I was 14 when Red Rose Speedway came out and of course had the LP.   Back then I used to babysit my niece for a few hours on Friday nights for my sister.  My niece absolutely LOVED the Brady Bunch and Partridge Family.   So what does this have to do with Little Lamb Dragonfly you ask?

Well everytime I hear  the backing vocals in the Dragonfly portion I envision Shirley Jones miming the words while pretending to be playing keyboards.   Go back and listen and I think you'll see what I mean.  I hesitate to bring it up because you may never get that image out of your head once you get it.

I still really like the song a lot and I agree Paul is in great voice here.  It wouldn't have cracked my top 50 Paul but this is your list not mine!!!!

(Paul #3)

Guitar riff!  Sure, it sounds a lot like the one from “Cold Turkey.” And sure, Paul seems to have adopted some other stylistic elements from John, such as the stripped down production and the nasally vocal with strong echo effect and the screaming at the end, but…guitar riff!!!  And sure, the phrase “let me roll it to you” is exactly the same as the last line of the first verse of George’s “I’d Have You Anytime,” but…guitar riff!!!

While it’s what draws me most into the song, I don’t love it only for that insistent guitar riff(!!!).  I love the quirky drum fills, the heavy organ sound, and especially the simple arrangement that works to highlight the phenomenal vocal delivery.  Paul’s wailing is even better than John’s.  Oh, did I accidentally mention John again?  Well, maybe what I like best overall is that it sounds like a John song.  It’s like getting both of them for the price of one.  John, by the way, borrowed back that guitar lick in “Beef Jerky” on Walls And Bridges (as well as borrowing almost all of "Savoy Truffle," it seems).

This John Paul song was the b-side to smash hit “Jet” and became wildly popular as well.  Paul has continued to play it through and including his last tour.  Even thread favorite Elvis Costello has seen fit to cover it in his concerts  (WARNING:  terrible recording quality).

Because of all the live it's gotten from @krista4 and others in this thread I finally listened to Brainwashed. Easily his best besides ATMP - all killer,no filler. It's been worth following this thread just for all the solo albums I'd never have given a shot without it.

Thanks again K4!!

Regardless of your true feelings for My Love, I am so sorry for your loss. And I'm going to be very careful about which links related to this discussion I'm going to click on.

Thanks, dude. I am happy to have a prank pulled on me if it leads to generosity such as this.

As I have mentioned briefly in my Neil countdown and elsewhere, I lost my father this year. He was on the board of the National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts (YoungArts). Their donation page is here: https://www.youngarts.org/together

(George #4)

Three songs in a row from 1973!  Where is tim’s Best of 1973 thread?

It’s another gorgeous devotional from George, which he described as having been written in a stream of consciousness as “a prayer and personal statement between me, the Lord, and whoever likes it.”  It’s safe to say most everyone likes it, as this became George’s second #1 and continues to be among his most beloved works.  This time, he stripped most of the Spector effects that had been featured in All Things Must Pass and instead presented this as a simple and plaintive plea, with his loving, fervent vocal supplemented most prominently by his amazing slide guitar work, which forms its own counter-melody in between the guitar solos.  The main melody here is stunning, and the interplay between it and the guitar work is stellar.  The lyrics are affecting in their simplicity and universality; this isn’t George haranguing us to be as spiritually enlightened as he, but relaying a common desire for inner peace and love through his own struggle to find it.  It also features an old George trick that gets me every time, which are the frequent time signature changes that make me feel for poor Jim Keltner.  Overall it’s just a phenomenally warm work that makes me smiling and happy every time I hear it, and since George was kind enough not to add any gibberish that sounds like French, I can even sing along!

Intra-thread tie-in alert!  Guess what song this one knocked from the top of the US charts?  Yep, “Spies Like Us” “My Love.”

OK, I had written this up in advance, too, so here you go.

John

5 votes - Watching the Wheels (simey, shuke, neal, Dr. Oct, falguy)

WINNERS!

Paul

5 votes - Maybe I’m Amazed (neal, Shaft, Dr. Oct, facook, Binky)

1 vote - Band on the Run (simey)

George

6 votes - What is Life (simey, shuke, Morton, jwb, falguy, Binky)

2 votes each - Beware of Darkness (neal, Dr. Oct); All Things Must Pass (facook, Uruk)

Since I’ve admitted that "Watching the Wheels" will be my #1 John song, here’s where we stand.  I have previously stated that all songs from the two main albums of All Things Must Pass are on my countdown, we know that my final three George songs are the three guessed above.  As a result:

If “Maybe I’m Amazed” is my Paul #1, then:

-        If my George #1 is “What Is Life,” then simey, shuke, neal, Dr. O, falguy, and Binky tie with two.  Applying the first tiebreaker, which is correctly choosing my Paul song, knocks it down to neal, Dr. O, and Binky.  Applying the second tiebreaker, which is correctly predicting my George song, makes Binky the winner.

-        If my George #1 is “Beware Of Darkness,” then neal and Dr. Octopus tie with three correct, and also none of the tiebreakers will break the tie.  Oops?

-        If my George #1 is “All Things Must Pass,” then neal, Dr. O, and facook tie with two correct.  The first tiebreaker has no effect, but facook wins on the basis of the second tiebreaker

If “Band On The Run” is my Paul #1, then:

-        If my George #1 is “What Is Life,” then simey wins with three correct

-        If my George #1 is “Beware Of Darkness,” then simey, neal, and Dr. O tie with two correct, and simey wins in the first tie-breaker having correctly predicted the Paul song

-        If my George #1 is “All Things Must Pass,” then simey wins with two correct

If neither of these songs is my Paul #1, then…aw c’mon, I’m not that insane.

I'm ####### glad I had this written up before that ####### post, or I'd be in no mood.  As it is, it was slightly unfinished but I'm not finishing it now.

7.  Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) (Living In The Material World, 1973)  Spotify  YouTube

This one's hard to beat. It's the only one of George's solo hits where I think everything works perfectly, though one coming up is really damned close.

Was this left over from the ATMP sessions/era?

No, it was written slightly later, in the '71-'72 time period.  I'd have to look it up to see if I can find a more exact time, but definitely not one of the leftovers.  It does seem like pretty much a perfect song.

That was a lot of work. Thanks for coming up with the idea.

6.  John Lennon and Yoko Ono - Watching The Wheels (Double Fantasy, 1980)  Spotify  YouTube

(John #1!!!!!!!)

As was clear from my Beatles thread, overall John’s songs were my favorites in the band’s output.  But here he comes in third, and it’s heartbreaking for me to think of how much we all missed out on due to his murder - not just musically, but to see how he developed as a human, what causes he undertook, what differences he might have made.  On the musical side, we got only five post-Beatles years of him due to his break for parenting.  While his last album might not have been my overall favorite, it contained my favorite John song, and I count us all so lucky that he came out of retirement for that very short time before his death.  John’s personal experience was expressed in this song in a universal fashion, as most of us can relate to the idea (dream?) of getting off the “wheel.”  The fact that it was released as a single posthumously seems to me like a perfect coda for his life, the tale of a “bad boy” who stepped off the wheel and became content in a domestic life where he didn’t have to be “John Lennon,” but instead “now…I’m John.”

I know I didn't talk about the music on that one, but for some reason it didn't feel right to talk about how much I love when the dulcimer hit that one note at that one point or whatever.  Can't quite say why, but it didn't.

Done GB.

If you want me to donate in his name PM me.

Thanks for being a good sport and condolences on your loss.  Hope 2021 is better for ALL of us!

Well, I got upset with you once for no good reason, and now once for very good reason, so maybe they balance out somehow.

Moving on.
Oh God.  What have I done?

Am glad I was offline for the past 3 hours.  All because I wanted Pip to click on a stupid link...yikes.
