I'm not sure about what's in the "book" they're talking about, but I did read the texts, including the one about Martin's mother and sister. Martin made similar comments to Richie. ESPN has no credibility with me in regards to this story. They ran with it from the start, even when the texts (at least in my mind) appeared to show Martin and Richie had a pretty good relationship. They took things completely out of context.
#FreeIncognito
That is where I was beginning to go, however it seems that there was a pattern of harassment that, regardless of Martin's skin thickness, was simply beyond the pale. In addition, the report suggests that Martin's continued texting etc. was done so because he felt there was no other way out, and maybe that was him "trying" to have a thick skin, even though he was being harassed.
It's easy to just say Man up, but it's also foolish not to at least try to understand the position of being a rookie and feeling that you better go along with the games or it's going to get worse... and worse could be a pretty damned scary place with this environment.
I read every last one of those texts and I just don't think they support this argument. There were many occasions where Martin was the one actually at the brothel, that posed as a strip club, texting Incognito to come meet him. All the back and forth seemed like normal banter between good friends. However, if you take a couple of those comments and completely disconnect them from the context of the conversation, it makes it look like it was harassment.
For instance. If I sent my buddy a text saying "I'm going to destroy you tomorrow" that could look like a threat, right? But the conversation actually went: - Are we playing hoops this weekend? - Yep. Put your big girl panties on this time ok? - I'm going to destroy you tomorrow. That's a whole different conversation, isn't it? This may not be the best of examples, but you get it, right?
One of the comments that was quoted in the media that seemed like racial harassment failed to also exhibit the response to that text from Martin that said something about giving someone some meth and having them chew Incognito's face off. So that was just Martin trying to fit in, right? Or could it be that these two just bantered back and forth like a lot of guys tend to do? Why is it that anything that Martin said or did that looks inappropriate in this situation was because of his struggle to fit in, but anything Incognito said was because he is a worthless vile bully?
I'll wait for the report. And no I don't trust anything ESPN has to say on this.
