Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (1 Viewer)

That was February 3rd of 2019. It's not ancient history, but in this football life, it's damn close.
What does NE have in common with ARI, ATL, CAR, CHI, DEN, DET, IND, LVR, LAC, MIA, NYJ, PIT, and WAS? None of those teams have won a playoff game since the Patriots last won the Super Bowl. That's 14 teams . . . 44% of the league. Sure, no one wants to be in that grouping, but it's not like NE is one of two teams that haven't won a playoff game the past 4 years. Yes, other teams are closer to making and winning a playoff game than NE is. But it's not like NE is suddenly a 3-win team year after year.

As for the part about Zappe and $485K in dead cap money, that's barely a blip on the radar. Having to eat $12.8M against the cap for Jonnu is a deep gash. Having to swallow $6.2M NEXT year for McCourty is another deep wound. Wasting almost $2.4M in cap space for Jake Bailey is another body blow. But the hit for Zappe is more like a paper cut.

One of the keys to BB's success was doing your job, being results-based and not making excuses...that helped separate them from the pack and was something the local fans loved...now it appears it is all about excuse-making and just being like all the other teams...BB of old would cut BB of today in a mili-second....I miss the old days with BB.

You can’t wave off Belichick’s mishandling of the QB room merely because most backup QBs aren’t that good. That’s not how it works.

Perhaps you could start by stating specifically how the QB room was mishandled? By not being able to reach into a magic bag and pull out a Tom Brady clone? By trading up to take Jones at 4 and giving away three 1sts and a 3rd? Oh wait...
So Mac Jones’ backup being a QB that none of the 31 other teams thought was worth claiming off waivers is a good thing? I never said they needed Brady, they just QB’s, and Belichick only deemed one worth keep at cutdown. He constructed the roster, that’s on him. I’m sorry if you don’t see it that way.

It was reported that 7 teams were interested in Zappe but his preference was to stay in NE. Not sure what that means, not sure if a team could have claimed him anyway and said deal with it, but there were a number of teams interested in him.

BB is infallable and exempt from all criticism. I guess you didn’t get the note. Don’t worry, neither did I.

Do we know the extent of their interest? If all 7 of those teams were only interested in having him on their practice squad, then staying in the system he already knows (and probably a handshake agreement that he is technically still QB2 here) is the no-brainer option. If they wanted him on their 53, that would be interesting. I get the sense that it was the former.

I hate to speak ill of Tom Brady, but across his career he had things somewhat easy. IIRC, in 6 seasons, his team won the division when there wasn't another team above .500. The QB competition in the conference usually wasn't great (mostly Peyton, Big Ben, and Rivers).

This year, there are 6 QBs in the AFC that have been ranked in the Top 10 players in the entire league at some point in their careers: Allen, Rodgers, Burrow, Jackson, Mahomes, and Wilson. In the past 20 years, the AFC has never seen this many strong teams and so many top level QBs in the conference at the same time. That's not an excuse, that's the cold hard reality. The AFC will be a gauntlet this year for all teams, not just NE.

I believe those teams wanted to wait for Zappe to clear waivers and then add him to their practice squads. None of them were prepared to add him to their 53-man rosters.

Then he made the best choice for himself. Every other team has at least 2 QB’s on their active roster, so his path to starter’s reps would’ve been longer elsewhere.

I really hope this is just a Matt Cassel sort of thing where he looked awful in the 2008 preseason but was still kept around and, when needed, stepped up to the challenge. Zappe looked good against the Browns and Lions, but not so much against the Bears. New season, new opportunity.

For Zappe's sake, I hope he could do better playing with the rest of the starting offense, but from listening to some podcasts, the team still appears to be searching for another more seasoned and savvy QB2. For some reason, he hasn't done as well with the concepts BOB wants to run, and it's likely that O'Brien is the one that doesn't think Zappe is a good fit. At least for now, Zappe has become indecisive and holds onto the ball too long. Even in practice, he has taken a ton of sacks rather than getting the ball out. I don't know if it's a processing thing, identifying the right reads, figuring out the coverage, or just not trusting his ability to deliver the ball properly. But one of the beat guys asked why Zappe was released and not kept on the 53-man roster and was told "because he stinks." Not exactly a vote of confidence.

Pats just claimed Matt Corral.

This is the sort of upside flier I like to see. I liked him at Ole Miss. 3rd round pick last year who suffered a season-ending injury in preseason against…the Patriots. Worth a look. As for any fantasy relevancy, maybe only worth monitoring in Superflex.

Agreed...why not...athletic QB that was productive in college...bring him in and see what happens...no downside here.

If this applies to Brady than it applies to BB...right? The good news for Brady is he went to Tampa and took a sub .500 team right to a championship.

Yes. It applies to the team, Brady, BB, etc. The path to winning now is much more difficult than the huge majority of years in the 00s and 10s. On top of that, having only one bye for the #1 seed also makes it harder.

It was an amazing confluence of events. Awesome defense, great receivers, great coaching, and crablegs winston at quarterback. Ironically, they needed Brady to modulate the aggressiveness of the passing attack.

“The Commonwealth states that consistent with its standard of review in all cases, it has thoroughly reviewed all the evidence in this case and determined that it cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Jones had knowledge that he possessed the firearms in his bag at the time of the incident,” the DA said in a court filing.

Surprised they could actually say this with a straight-face...

All he needs is a patsy to say that he or she packed his bag for him and he had no idea about the guns. The state would have lost this case in court

There was always an Uncle back in the day...would love to know what his excuse for having two loaded guns (I believe both were, I know at least one was) and a large capacity magazine...I'm sorry your Honor, I meant to grab my phone charger and I was in such a rush I grabbed my guns which I keep right next to the charger.

Gun charges against CB Jack Jones were dropped (although the league could still impose its own penalty).

There should be a league suspension. I'm not sure how much, maybe 1 or 2 games to send a message. I think Tyreek also should've gotten a 1 game suspension to send a message.

But why would he knowingly carry firearms onto an airplane? haven't followed the story, but that wouldn't seem to make much sense.

I had to drop someone off at the same terminal a few minutes after this went down. The place was swarming with cops and state troopers, as they weren’t sure what was going on and if there were other confederates involved.

Jones’ bag had two weapons and a high capacity feeding device. The device alone carries a minimum 2.5 year sentence for unregistered carriers In Massachusetts.

Jones accepted a year of probation and 48 hours of community service for the case to be dropped. In the past, the league has imposed a 2 game suspension for players who faced gun charges. That will probably be the case again here.

It really puts the brain in a pretzel trying to figure out how something like this happens. Lemme just throw 2 loaded handguns in my carry-on. It will be fine.

BB playing three dimensional chess while the rest of the league struggling to play checkers. Corral released. Speculation they may try to add him to practice squad, but I’m not sure of the process and rules on that.

When he does stuff like this it makes me laugh my a$$ off because he's just trying to irritate people now.

As far as Jack Jones goes, if he was suspended, they would list him as suspended. Having him designated as out with an injury means they have to pay him for this week. He practiced earlier this week, so that’s another indication he actually is injured. IIRC, if he was suspended, he would not have been able to practice.

Jeff Howe reports Jones is expected to miss multiple weeks and a trip to IR is a possibility.

The Corral situation apparently took a turn for the more bizarre. He’s been placed in the exempt / left team list. It does not appear they released him. Not sure how that works.

Ty Montgomery alert:

This now concerns me as a Stevenson owner. It was looking like they were going to role with 2 RB’s active between him and Zeke, with those guys handling the receiving as well as the rushing. Montgomery being active now has me thinking Stevenson’s role for Week 1 is either getting reduced or he’s sitting. We’ll find out closer to gametime, but I’m not feeling great about it. Bad enough that Montgomery is such an underwhelming player.

Bill likes Montgomery. He's not a threat to RS...they use him in gadget plays a la Cordero Patterson,

Do we really know what Montgomery’s role is? He played in 3/4 of the first game last year and had 2 carries, 3 receptions, and their only TD of the game when DH and RS were both healthy.

Color me worried as an Elliott GM. I want to use him tomorrow. This dampens that idea for sure.
I think BB and BOB are counting on the fact that there is no game film for PHI to work with and the Pats can call whatever they want to confuse the Eagles. That may not matter if they can’t get the OL to be more cohesive. But the element of surprise should be in their favor. That might be the only thing. Well, that and it being TB12 night.

I'm not sure there's much you can do with him to surprise the Eagles as they're pretty familiar with him. He's is what he is at this point. If I were betting, I'd put some $$ on Zeke with an anytime touchdown today. He usually scores against the Birds.

Factor in that his best buddy Patricia is now with Philly and it would really have to be something to be a surprise...

Parker is not likely to play. JJSS-Douglas-Boutte-Gesicki-Elliott weren’t there last year. They barely used Bourne and Montgomery only played a few snaps last season. BOB has already shown he will do things differently than Patricia did. Plenty of film of Zappe with practice squad guys and roster cuts if that helps any. It may not make any difference, but the Eagles don’t have a lot to scheme from. And that may not scare them either, as NE doesn’t exactly have guys to blow by defenders.

BOB is not exactly an unknown quantity...outside of Douglas and Boutte all those players are known quantities...I'm sure they will try to do some different stuff but how much you can do with their current offensive personnel...it is pretty limited.

Eagles have two new starting LBers, two new starting safeties, and a new defensive coordinator. There will be some opportunities in the middle of the field. Douglas should see some targets. Bourne could get some slants. TEs could get seam routes. RBs will get some screens. And there will be a couple of shots off of play action. They may not do anything with them or they could only get some dinky stuff underneath, but there will be some things that will be available to them.

I'm curious how the Eagles defense will look this year. New DC, new linebackers, new safeties. I expect a run heavy offense from NE today to shorten the game, slow down the Eagles relentless pass rush and keep the Eagles offense off the field.

So it is a normal NFL game.

Three most important things for the Pats and it is all basic...can they handle the Eagles pass rush...can they establish a legit ground game and keep third down manageable...can their D get off the field on third down...not reinventing the wheel here...Philly is a much better team, so the Pats have to control the style of football today...if they don't they do not have the talent to keep up.

"They got outscored 16-0 (in the first quarter). I'm saying it might be 64 at this rate and Tom Brady's day is going to be ruined. And then they actually channel some resourcefulness, some resiliency, and they show up, outscoring the Eagles 20-9. And they put together a representative effort. We all thought they were gonna lose to the Eagles. They just didn't stink. There is so much upside to look at."

Next up Miami at home...hate to say there are must-wins this early in the season but with the next two on the road at NYJ and Dallas this one is important...that being said if they can build off of yesterday's performance, I will give them a pass on their record...yesterday was the first time in a while I felt like they were making progress...still need to see more but I really hope it can continue thru these next three games.

The problem from yesterday is the same one from the past few seasons. They played really well and didn't make a lot of mistakes . . . but the mistakes they made came at the absolute worst possible times. They may have survived an INT in PHI territory if all it was was a turnover . . . but not a pick six. They may have lived with a fumble . . . just not right outside their own red zone.

The few penalties they had either extended Eagles drives or killed NE drives. The OL did great until the last few minutes, but the two sacks they allowed came on must-have drives that ended without any points scored. Boutte had two non-catches that they had to have . . . and he killed both drives by a matter of inches. Unfortunately, that's the difference for this team in winning and losing.
