Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (10 Viewers)

Reports are that Dante is coming back...if that is the case than big money is not needed on the O-line...they do need to add more talent (especially at tackle) but if he is coming back my guess is you will see dramatic improvement from the youngsters they have...

I think the Pats have a lot of talent in the interior. Kline, Mason, Jackson, Wendell, Andrews and Stork. A lot of those guys were scouted by Dante.

They do need depth at tackle however. Very thin, Vollmer and Solder are very good/elite, but nothing behind them. Think the Pats need to go after an OT early and grab one of those many big body receivers in the mid rounds.

The Pats have had very little success in drafting receivers and opted not to pick any in drafts that have turned out to have really productive guys. At this point, trading for or signing a receiver seems like a better route to go. Although I am pretty sure they would love to get their hands on Braxton Miller.

I have already heard talk of BB cost the team a title by not winning against the Jets or the Dolphins. Felger suggested the Patsw would have beaten Denver in Foxboro by at least 17, possibly more. I disagree. The way the Broncos defense was playing down the stretch, NE would have suffered the same fate even at home.
Maybe winning by 17 or more is a stretch, but I think the Pats would have had a MUCH better chance in Foxboro. The Pats had to go with a silent count in Denver and the Broncos did an outstanding job timing the rush with the snap, often getting enough of a jump to put Vollmer and Cannon behind the 8-ball. In Foxboro, Brady would have been able to use a hard count and vary it to help keep Denver from getting that jump.
There's a lot of factors, the noise being a huge one... I don't think Gronk is sucking O2 on his back in Foxboro.... The stinking Pats/Brady trainwreck was still a missed PAT away from getting to overtime. Greg Bedard ,I thought, had a lot of good points including how lousy Brady played when he did have a little time, how they let the play clock go down too far letting the DE's tee off, etc etc etc. Whatever, it was a suckfest and the prescription for beating the Pats was filled.

Bellichick and McDaniels hold a lot of responsibility for the loss too.

Oh I know they have a terrible record picking WRs. I just meant more in a general sense, there are so many big body wrs in this class, few if any of them are world beaters, I just think the Pats need a big body guy - I'm worried Gronk isn't gonna make it to 30.

If they were going to go for a big bodied target for Brady to throw to, it almost would make more sense to draft another TE. It would probably cost less in draft capital and might also help some with the blocking issues. I hate to say it, but I think they miss having Hernandez on the field.

They definitely need another TE that can both block and catch...I think we all liked the Chandler signing but he really disappointed...they need another legit threat at that position...especially with Gronk's injury history...they do need another WR...when LaFell played well last year it really added another dimension to the offense...the issue as always is can the guy (be it a veteran or draft pick) come in, pick up the offense and earn Brady's trust...unfortunately it seems like you just don't know until they actually play here...I think adding another quality RB would be a big plus as well...Lewis has an injury history and while I'm ok with White as depth they need someone better than him...they need another RB that can both run and catch (White is almost a non-threat running the ball)...when Lewis went down it hurt badly as there was a steep step down from him...a guy like Bilal Powell would be a great addition assuming he is affordable...

I was thinking to make it work it would be a similar situation to the Jets with Enunwe. Just a big bodied dude who plays wr/te.

It's a lot to ask from a young guy to be able to play two positions. I wouldn't be upset if they took gronks little brother to play FB/TE

The one thing I have also felt BB and NE didn't do great on was playing to the strengths of his receivers and utilizing them in a way that they could be productive. Instead, PLAYER X couldn't grasp the entirety of the playbook (1,000+ plays) and thus didn't work out.

To which I would wonder, why not put PLAYER X on the field and have him run the 25 routes he has mastered and can be effective at. If that player can run square ins, slants, or post routes then let him run those routes. If you want to audible out of a play, not every receiver needs to scrap what they were going to do. They would at least have a guy that could play 30% of the snaps and chip in 25 or 30 catches. In recent years, it seems like they have had a slot guy, a secondary receiver, and Gronk. They haven't really had much production from fourth or fifth receivers.

My other complaint for years has been that they have relied too heavy on their starters and have often left guys on the sidelines until someone got hurt. To expect them to just step in and be productive when they hardly ever saw game action is looking for trouble. Would taking Edelman or Gronk out for 20-25 snaps a game in a blow out to get someone else some reps really be that detrimental? Having more healthy bodies and viable options available IMO would only serve to help the team, not hurt it.

I dunno, I think they do everything they can. To get as close as they did with so many injuries is a huge accomplishment. As usual, while all these other teams face major off-season issues, there is zero reason to doubt the Patriots as at least another AFC finalist.

They get a lot of mileage out of superior scouting and game planning, and I suspect that advantage shrinks tremendously when the playoffs roll around. Suddenly every opposing coach and player starts putting in the extra effort too.

But all this realism is no fun: I think we need to replace Ridley (yes, Ridley); get a guy who can carry it 20 times a game and give us another dimension on offense. Blount can't carry the load, plus I think given the athletes we have on the O-line (no real maulers), I think a slasher style works better (everyone in Pats Nation is obsessed about getting Forte... how about Arian Foster?)

####ty to think about, but was looking forward to next season and I hadn't heard anything about Solder.

Last I heard his infant son was dealing with cancer. Was looking for recent news and there has been nothing about him or his son, could complicate things next season.

Tons of people talking about Forte's fit in NE. I know he said he wants to win a ring and is willing to make sacrifices.

So two questions;

1. Likelihood he comes to NE? Pats have a little less than 2mil in cap space, not sure if thats counting the cap increase or not. Reasonably expect the team to not pick up Mayo's option - would save 6.4m towards the cap. Dola is another player I think they might revisit his deal, possible extension that would lower his cap hit. Save another 2.5m letting Lafell go. So there is definitely room to make a move, granted hes gonna have to take less than market value probably.

2. How does he split the field with Lewis. They kind of compliment each other while also sharing a role? Very weird interaction. Having them share the field would be sick, but is it doable?

This guys fantasy offseason gets me moist - if they manage to pull off half of that we should make it back to the big game despite our brutal schedule.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss believes free agent Matt Forte "could be a perfect fit" with the Patriots.
The price would have to be right -- the Pats aren't the sort of team to pay top dollar for a 30-year-old running back -- but on paper there isn't a better fit across the league than Forte in Foxboro. Reiss previously suggested the Patriots will "explore the possibility" of signing Forte. LeGarrette Blount is a free agent, while space back Dion Lewis is rehabbing a torn ACL.

I think he would be a fantastic fit...rolling him and Lewis out would be a big-time 1-2 punch...both can run and catch at a high level...defenses would have to account for them in a big way and I firmly believe the Pats offense is at their best when they are utilizing the screen game to the fullest...also, with the injury history of Lewis and Forte getting older having both would keep their mileage down because you don't have to overuse them...if Forte is not looking to cash in than there are zero reasons for the Pats not to pursue him...

Scarnecchia is back boys. Oline troubles are almost over.

I think Scarnecchia coming back this offseason was up there with least likely things. Very excited

In an unsurprising move the Pats decline Mayo's option. RIP :(

He sent a message out on instagram before the news of his option being declined. The first comment on his post was from him saying that he was retiring a Patriot - might not be now, but it feels like it.

Mayo retired.
Heard that might be coming but still suprised. He could've made another five out of being a vet at someplace.  I know some are speculating him to go right into coaching, but I wonder if he doesn't want to take some time and spend it with his family.

What a great all around LB, though.

Whoa.  All the profanity is showing.  You guys ought to be ashamed.

Edit:  Re: Mayo. As much as the retirement is sad, it was a downer just to have him be so diminished by his injuries.  Even when he was on the field he just couldn't be the player he had been. Tough game.

I think Geneo Grissom and Freeney can compete for a starting spot. The Rams might move on from Ayers, idk why they would but they would save a couple million. If they did I think the Pats should look him up and if not I think Laurinitus could be a good fit if he didn't want a veteran premium deal.

I'm getting to like Quickslants:The Podcast. Once you realize Curran's schtick in the intro is a joke, they go pretty deep, really.

A lot of talk the past few days about trading Garappolo for a high second round pick. I don't get the logic. If NE trades him, they will still need a back up. After two years, he's cheap and likely knows the offense. They would still need a potential long term solution post TB12, so they would need to invest a relatively high pick to get a decent prospect. There also the question of how much is Jimmy G. worth and who would want him.

The only way it would make sense to me is if they extended Brady before the season started and were able to grab a guy in the draft they liked.

Either way they should extend Brady, I like Jimmy and would like him to stick around. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that he wanted a shot to start somewhere though. I think its just talk tbh, Pats are down a pick this year and Jimmy is like the only tradeable asset in the current market besides Chandler Jones

At the risk of inciting the butt hurt turds to chime in, I have to post this since it is probably the best and most succinct breakdown of the whole abomination.

http://www.stradleylaw.com/patriots-draft-picks/

Don't want to get into the abomination here (please, there r other threads for that) just thought it worth posting and to acknowledge the really good work this woman has done.

Because of Stradley, I had way more interest in the Texans this year than I would have.  She's been a champ on the PSI issue all along.

Was pretty much guaranteed to happen, Brady was set to make a ton of money this year. Really hoping they make something happen.

Need to restructure Dola, cut Scott Chandler and Cannon. Restructure/extend Vollmer/Solder, extend Butler, and definitely start looking at what to do with Jones vs Sheard and line some money up for Hightower and Collins.

If Brady plays 4 more year and I think he will, at least 3 more years of elite production, he will likely take all of the 'unbreakable' records.

Only 14 wins from tying the Wins record. Needs to average less than 3.5k yards over four years to take the yardage record. Needs to average at least 28 TDs over four years to take the TD record.

Barring injury I think he coasts into those tbh.

One obstacle could easily be Drew Brees. He is a year younger than TB12 and has almost 2,000 more passing yards.  He and Brady are tied in TD passes. Who knows how long these guys will play and at what level.

Unlike Brady, Brees could end up on another team. So he could end up somewhere with better skill position players. Even missing a game playing for the Saints this season and with a receiving corps in transition, Brees still led the league in passing yards. Sticking in New Orleans probably is a good thing for Brees' totals.

WR LaFells and TE Scott Chandler cut per Schefter
This saves them a lot of money and was expected. I wanna say off the top of my head like 4-5mil

Things they still need to do:

  • Release Cannon
  • Restructure Amendola
  • Restructure Solder
  • Restructure Vollmer
  • Figure out how to not blow up their defense in 2017
  • Sign Matt Forte and one of the many good FA WRs and OL
  • Convince Akiem Hicks to resign, plz lol

On track, depending on how much gained from Brady extension they should be close to 20m. If they extend Vollmer/Solder they should free up some more, same with Dola. Then it becomes a cluster ####er trying to figure out how to fit Chandler Jones, Jamie Collins, Dont'a Hightower, Malcom Butler under the cap.

Interesting. Brady extension not a done deal per Curran. Says they haven't agreed on all the financials but have agreed to the general groundwork. Whatever that means.

Dobson waived, finally.

The Brady deal will get done, theres no rush if they know the general plan.

Edit: Oops, a little premature - word is he will be waived tomorrow. But that is coming from a ton of people, save to assume done deal.
