Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (4 Viewers)

Am I wrong in thinking the Patriots are in a good position to offer as many draft picks as necessary to trade for Deshaun Watson?

Does four 1st round picks get it done? Throw in a couple players too?

And is that a price the Patriots should pay?

It can't hurt that the Texans GM is Nick Caserio who spent twenty seasons with the Patriots.

I doubt NE has enough to offer HOU. For starters, they don’t have a QB to send back, nor do they have an early enough draft pick for the Texans to draft one of the hot shot rookies.

Breer sounds like NE could be in on Fournette.
That’s odd. Seems redundant with Michel and Harris on roster.

James White needs to be replaced, they need that quick back who can catch passes in this offense. Wonder if that will be a draft target.

Fournette caught 76 passes his last season with the Jaguars. I agree he doesn’t seem like a 3rd down/receiving back, but he has shown he can at least catch the ball.

He can catch swing passes but he is slower than molasses. I think the pats really missed the old James White last year. Signing Jonnu was huge for the offense, I think finding that pass catching back that can run all the routes like White could is really important. Not sure if there are any backs like that in free agency. I know there are several mid rounders like that in the draft (rb from UCLA comes to mind).

Fournette has too many red flags - character questions and he seemed to have 5 good games last year. Does he sign his next contract and just going back to massive underachiever?

The big issue with White last year was Cam...lack of accuracy and touch does not help an RB like him.

Breer brought up a couple of good points. The first was that NE only had a cap surplus because their recents drafts were HORRIBLE. Normally, they would be trying to keep and extend players they drafted. In NE’s case, they already got rid of multiple players and are stuck with guys they don’t really want. The other was that they can forget about any comp picks for next year. All the guys they signed will count against them, and they won’t have enough of their players switching teams to cancel that out.

The other thing I noticed a lot with Cam is he would get the ball to his backs about six inches from defenders. Or he would try to throw the ball through a defender and passes would get deflected a lot. By comparison, I don’t remember seeing that when Tom was back there.

Agreed...he didn't give him an opportunity for any YAC.

Do you really think they will sign Rudolph and Hunter? And last I saw, Edelman is nowhere close to playing and is not even sure he will be able to play in 2021. I am not convinced he will even be on the team (unless it is clear he can play close to the start of the season and be close to 100%),
I was hoping for Rudolph and Hhenry.  Worked out even better

Hunter Henry to the Pats. 3 years 37.5mil deal.
This likely means Cam will be their primary QB this year. It also explains why they are said to be in on a bunch of RB. Lots of running and play action. IMO, if they are trying to build the offense around Cam that would be a mistake.

At this point (and with the 2022 cap situation Anarchy has pointed out) they are going to be in a good position to use draft picks to trade up and get the rookie QB.

Unfortunately he is the one fatal flaw...I just can not believe he is going to do all this and give the keys to the car to Cam...with BB's coaching this team has a chance to improve dramatically over last year.

Patriots doing what they need to do for that McDaniels offense. Two excellent tight ends. Going to open things up for Agholar to be Edelman. Now just need that speedy pass catching back and they are golden on offense (obviously aside from Newton possibly being completely washed up).

They mostly replaced older players that were leaving with good young players.

They're now much better than last year on offense.  They will be able to run two te sets with a receiver who blocks well, a deep threat and a back who can run and catch.  That's what they wanted and I'm excited about this build.

They won't get any comp picks so they're doing this all in one year and getting lots of younger free agents.  They'll get comp picks after future classes. Peel the bandaid.

They're better suited for a power running game now with those tight ends and cam and bringing back Brown on the line. And agholor is going to be their deep threat imo.  He's not someone you have to double but he can go deep with 4.4 speed so they can take shots with him when the safeties cheat up.

The challenge will be defending two tight ends who can both block or go out for a pass- if you play man you're going to want a safety or fast linebacker on them. You'll still need corners on their two wrs. If both your safeties are occupied on the tight ends you have to worry about aghlor going deep. If you have 5 d backs you have to worry about very good blocking tight ends and receivers and defend a running back and a big running quarterback.

This will be a very good running team

I don’t know if there is a word greater than much better but their offensive signings make that offense much much much better. Henry and Jonnu in 12 personnel? With Agholar being moved all over formation? Going to be fun to watch what they do and I’m not a Pats fan at all.

One way or another, this will absolutely tell the football world if Cam Newton has anything left or is done.

Yes, he looked horrible in the second half of last year...and maybe his benefactors can say it was due to the pitiful supporting cast of offensive weapons.  That is no longer the case.

His detractors, if he's not at least in the QB10-16 range, will be all over him if he doesn't produce this year.

Paradoxically, I have zero concerns about Cam elevating his play over last year, to enable finishing 11-5 or somesuch, but I doubt NE can win a SB with him at QB unless they face a run-soft defense.

At this point if I'm fournette Carson or Conner I'm suddenly very interested in playing here.  Jonnu Henry brown bourne all big time upgrades in run blocking and they will be able to break big runs but won't need 20 carries to do it. Could extend their careers.

I’m sure that’s a factor, Newton throws the ball the same velocity whether the pass  catcher is right next to him or 80 yards down field. But white just didn’t look as quick with the ball in his hands as he has in the past.

If the Pats don't feel they can get the QB they want even if they trade up, would adding one of the Top 3 WR be overkill at this point? If they stay at 15, they could probably have the last of the Big 3 WR or LB/CB/DE. Given what we have seen the last few drafts, why not take a RB here (yes, that would be dumb).

Another thing I have heard a lot between last night and this morning. Historically, teams can't buy a championship and teams that have spent huge in free agency are usually not much better (and quickly go back to their losing ways). The artist formerly known as Reskins say hi. In NE's case, they weren't bottom feeders with bad coaching and ownership, so I wonder if that trend would continue here.

With the moves they have made and looking at roster, I think trading down continuously is a smart move. Might want to address Interior O Line early but they might be best served accumulating picks.

Interesting tweet from Jeff Howe . . .
Bill Belichick just threw around money like a coach who wants to reap the benefits of rostering a QB on a rookie contract.

If you like researching oline guys let me know what you think of this small school guy Meinerz. Wouldn’t take him at 15th overall, but in second round seems like a great pick.

.....and no QB.
What's interesting and noteworthy is beat guys and national guys seem to be split pretty evenly. Some say these moves ensure Pats will take their QB of the future early in the draft (ie move up in the first). Others say their moves signify they will roll with Cam and do their usual take a developmental guy on Day 2 type of thing.

I don't come in here much, as a Phinsfan/Bucsfan that would explain why but I do want to say I am impressed with how the Pats are spending their money.

Miami spent theirs last year on guys like KVN and Shaq Lawson, both are gone for whatever reasons but they played pretty well, both of them. They signed Jones at Cornerback, paid him more than Howard who went out and has 10 interceptions and now wants a raise, more than Jones got paid.

The players the Patriots are bringing in don't just seem like 1 year experiments with the exception of one glaring position, the QB where it appears Cam will play another season for almost the bare minimum a starting QB would even think of taking, Fitzmagic got DOUBLE the money but I think Cam knows that the Patriots are gonna be ####### good next year when all their players return and they are adding guys to this roster, spending on WRs, unheard of for them but they are bringing int he weapons and tools for Newton to succeed and have a much better season than a year ago.

I am worried for the Miami Dolphins and anyone else sleeping on BB up there, The Empire is Striking Back!

Let's get to the juice here, Agholor for those that do not know, massively increased his ypc last season as he was finally turned loose on the outside with that 4.4 speed he has and while he doesn't catch them all, almost a 60% catch rate...alright 58.5% for you exactomundos out there but he stretches the field and when Cam runs play action up top he's going to like having a speed guy to stretch the field.

Next, the defenses turn right around and get clubbed by Trent Brown and Johnnu Smith plus Henry in 2 TE formations allowing the Patriots to bludgeon teams between stretching them with Hunter Henry in the mix, McDaniels running the ship from the control deck and BB reunited with Patty running the defense, we might as well get the table set for what is going to be the biggest Super Bowl EVER, that's right boys and girls, it's time to start running the promos...

Super Bowl LVI...Brady vs Belichick in what should be the final Super Bowl ever played, they should name it something else after that because it could never be that Super ever again.

Brady: "I'll play for $9M ATC and we will flip the table on the NFL"

Belichick: "Oh yeah, i'm gonna get Cam to bend and sign for $5M"

Belichick +$4M, he's ahead already and he'a accumulating chess pieces as we speak.

I think he is a riser like Mopart was for the buccaneers a few years ago. Wouldn’t be surprised if he goes in second. I think a guard who will slip because of injury but can play at an elite level is Dickerson.

Cams contract is not a starting qb contract. Starting to get feeling Pats are in love with 1 or 2 QBs prospects not named Lawrence, Wilson, and Fields.

whether that’s Jones, Lance, or Trask is anyone’s guess but I would not be surprised to see them move up to take Wilson or Fields either.

They have filled out their roster nicely except for O Line - they can afford to trade this years first, next years first and more to move up to nab that qb and still be in great shape.

And I don’t think it’s too far fetched to see them in on Russell Wilson or DeShaun Watson by giving up multiple firsts and a couple of players.

At least three teams are said to be interested in WR N’Keal Harry. Apparently those teams don’t have any film on him.
They waited a year to long to say good riddance to Harry. I don’t see any team that would benefit with him on their roster.
