Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (6 Viewers)

Looking at the Pats schedule there are 4 games where I don't think they have a chance...home and home with Buffalo, at Miami and home against the Chiefs...that gets you to 7 losses...the rest of the home schedule is Saints, Commanders, Colts, Chargers, Jets...away schedule is Vegas, NYG, Steelers, Broncos...I will stick with my 6-11 prediction.

Gonzalez needs surgery and appears to be done for the season. NE traded for JC Jackson and a 2025 7th for a 2025 6th round pick.

My gawd ... can't believe they are taking on this massive contract for a player that was a "healthy scratch" for LAC last week.
Pats will be on the hook for the final 3 years of his $82m contract. So much for signing a high profile WR for the foreseeable future.
They must know something about this guy that the Chargers don't know ... like how he now has a warrant for his arrest for violation of his probation.
Belichick going to give the judge some Bon Jovi tickets to make the charge go away?

Lol .... but at least we got to see the full potential of the offense Sunday.
... since they weren't content to hold back and just run the ball like they did vs the Jets.

Belichick is really just going thru the motions. The fire is all but out. He doesn't really care anymore.
I don't think anyone should fault the Krafts for parting ways with him after this season.
McDaniels seems to be terrible as a HC ... so it's probably good that he's not in line for this job.
They need some new blood. Bring in someone from outside the organization to blow this up and rebuild it right.
The good news is they will have a very early draft pick to build around (top 5)

The Chargers apparently are paying most of his 2023 salary. Not sure what the % or dollar amount is.

"They’re going to have to pay him a lot of money this season [except they are not...per Anarchy99] , but Jackson doesn’t have any guaranteed money on his contract beyond 2023, so the Patriots can easily restructure his deal after that."

Link Pats paying Jackson $1.5 million for the remainder of the season.

So who finishes in last? The Pats or the Jets? My money is on the Jets. The Athletic projects them to have the number five pick in the draft, while the Patriots are projected to be picking tenth.

Not the way either team wanted it to go this year.

*sigh*

Wait until next year.

My guess is it will be the Jets due to the Zack factor but with Gonzalez and Judon now out that could be a game-changer...Pats have the Saints at home this week...that will be an excellent barometer as to how the rest of the season unfolds...if they roll over and don't show up things could get really bad in Foxboro this year.

but with Gonzalez and Judon now out that could be a game-changer

One positive thing amid that bad news, though. Gonzalez being as good as he was for the first three games has got to bode well for the Pats next year. He seemed like a shutdown corner. I wasn't sure he would have the speed to do so, but he clearly did. The Pats got a really good player in the first round this time.

Totally agree...only 4 games but he looks like he's going to be a legit #1 CB...the kid is very smooth out there...if they could get Jack Jones to grow up they could have a very good group of CBs as they also have Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones although each one of them is now injured...the Judon injury is brutal but on the bright side it means they will get a good idea just how good Keion White is and whether they should pay Uche.

Keion White

Looked really good and disruptive vs. Houston this preseason. How has he been playing?

They have been kind of slow-rolling him...he is playing around 30-40% of the defensive snaps...looks very promising but so far not as electric as he did in preseason...the plus side of the Judon injury is they are now forced to play him more...with Judon being 31 and Uche potentially leaving in FA it will be nice to see just what they have with him this year.

So depressing...hate to see the BB era end like this but it is his own doing...there is nothing to like about the current state of this franchise...there is no plan in place...none...Mac is a disaster right now and it looks as if they don't even practice offense...something has to give here.

How's THAT for a barometer?...
Injuries on defense and this team is now the worst in the league... Honestly, can you name a team that has has less talent or is more inept?
Watching San Fran tune up the Cowboys last night... wondering how they can have so much talent on both sides of the ball, that they can win handily with an average QB... against a quality team that just beat my team 38-3.
BB would never consider acquiring a player like Mccaffry (or Tyreek Hill, or Davante Adams, or Diggs).
For BB it's about cast offs and has beens that he can land on the cheap.
BB has proven that he can not win without Brady. I don't need to see any more.

this is pretty spot on, i think Brady inflated Belichek's ego to the point where he thought because that strategy worked for 20 years w/ Brady it would keep working. Kendrick Bourne is their #1 wr, while Stevenson is decent they really have noone dynamic out of the backfield, Mac prob isn't very good but has no offensive weapons so can't even really be sure about that.

Shula's last 3 seasons were 9-7, 10-6, 9-7. They made the playoffs his last year but got destroyed in the playoffs by BUF. A big name in coaching was available, Jimmy Johnson. Is there a bg name out there? Lincoln Riley if NE tanks.

Here is the question post-BB...it has not been 100% confirmed but it has been considered pretty much a lock locally that Jerod Mayo would be BB's successor...he played his whole career with the Pats, stayed local afterwards, is very well-liked by everyone and once his star began to rise as an Assistant Coach he took himself out of HC considerations which pretty much everyone assumed was because there was some type of handshake agreement with the Krafts that he was the next man up (especially when McDaniels left for Vegas)...now that the BB era is imploding I'm not sure this will be the lock it may have once been...before this implosion it felt like there would be some type of BB 2.0 when he stepped down where he may still run football operations and there would be BB acolytes like Matt Groh taking over positions like GM and who knows what he had planned for his sons...IMO the key to that whole plan was BB moving on on his own terms...right now I don't think that is how this story is going to end and because of that everything may (and should change) which means before they find a Coach (or decide on Mayo) they are going to need to find someone to run the whole football operation...who that is is anyone's guess right now...also, with regard to Mayo he is a defensive guy and the trend in the NFL is leaning heavily towards offensive guys so that could weigh heavily towards who the next HC is especially after what has happened with Mac...bottom-line is there are going to be some big changes coming and I don't think they are going to go the way they thought they may have gone a couple of years ago.

Does BB pass Shula? He’s 17 wins short? Seemed like a lock. Now not so much.

That has been the elephant in the room as BB has begun to decline...I think everyone (especially the Krafts) would like to see him do this with the Pats...he went into the year 17 behind and many (not me) thought this team could win around 9 games which would get you about 1/2 way...as long as the Pats were decent BB would probably be back in 2024 with the hope he gets the record...with this season turning into a debacle I only see two outcomes...one, BB is totally gone or two, he is stripped of all football operation powers and remains the HC...the issue with two is I cannot picture anyone wanting to take over football operations and still have BB there and if this season goes the way it appears it will there is a good chance getting the record in 2024 will be a stretch so it could be a moot point.

The question than becomes will anyone hire him...I truly have no clue about that...would he want to start over just to get a record and would anyone want to hire him just as a HC and if they did would he accept not having control over personnel...my guess is if he was to resurface it would be in either Vegas or Dallas...he appears to have a good relationship with both Davis and Jerry.

I'm tellin ya, he's destined for the booth. If Romo can do it...
The thing with BB is if it is stuff he wants to talk about he is the best interview you can have...I think those who saw the Top 100 list saw that...now, if he doesn't want to talk about it you are better off talking to the wall.

Curran on the current state of affairs...he thought they could win 11 games going into this season which really surprised me because he is as good as you get in the media and all the warning signs were there:

BB is gonna need to coach here another 4 seasons to get 17 more wins.
The all-time coaching wins record is no longer on the table.
It’s worse than that. Shula’s at 328 and Belichick’s at 299, so he needs 30 more wins to pass the record. (Edit - just realized it’s for regular season, it’s 17 if including playoffs) It’s not going to happen with New England, and one has to wonder if it’s ever going to happen now. Would’ve been a lot closer to it by now if he hadn’t completely squandered the draft. You’re supposed to find your core players in the draft, and right now there’s only 1 player still around from 2017 (Deatrich Wise) and 2018 (Ja’Whaun Bentley) and none from the 10 players drafted in 2019. The best franchises either draft well, have elite players who mask their draft mistakes, or a combination of both. The Patriots today are none of the above.

Belichick is 17 wins behind Shula for the all-time record. 347-330

For the regular season, he's 29 wins behind. 328-299

Might be nice to figure out which record he cares about breaking so he can hang it up soon.

Summarizing the Patriots season in one sentence. Total points scored on the season: Jake Elliot, kicker, Philadelphia Eagles 59 points. New England Patriots, entire team, 55 points.

Tom Curran just called them the worst team in football on the radio.
He's making my point...
Like I said, I can't name another team with less talent or that is more inept than this years Patriots ... can you?
At least the Giants can score double digits on most Sundays.

Management really has to do a terrible job for several seasons to get a team to this level of cringe.
Their offensive formula worked for 2 decades ...
So where is the Kevin Faulk / James White player that BB's teams would rely on to move the chains on 3rd and 6? (or win a SB down 28-3)
Who is your Welker / Edleman type player that they lean on heavily to kill the opposing team by way of "death by paper cuts"? Shuster-Smith??
Instead of drafting, signing, or trading for those types of players, ... they draft the Sony Michel's, N'Keal Harry's and Tyquan Thornton's of the world.

As critical as I am of their last 6 years of management, this years draft was FINALLY on point.
Taking quality players where they were projected to go (or later) and finding surprise talent in the later rounds (Douglas, Boutte)
Unfortunately it's not enough to correct 5, 6, (or 8?) years of mismanagement with this team that is now so depleted of talent.

These comments by BB now seem comical ...
Belichick - spend now pay later

Criticizing LAR and TB for overspending in an effort to "Win now" ... and now LAR and TB having to deal with the salary cap implications this year and beyond.
... I think most NE fans would rather have either one of those salary cap hampered rosters ... over what BB has built with his disciplined cap spending.
Now another issue has been created ... what big name free agent would want to come play for this team? This team can no longer be considered a playoff contender.
The only way NE is able to land a big name free agent now will be to over pay them.
Since BB believes in disciplined cap spending, that won't be an option. This team will wallow in it's own below average talent for many more seasons to come.

As you point out the frustrating part is it so obvious what they are doing was not going to work…having Cam as the QB post-TB12 was bad but I gave him a pass because there had to be a transition and you knew it would not be easy but when he made Patricia the OC my antenna really went up that there was not a coherent plan and nothing I have seen the past year has made me feel any different…they are rudderless.

Why is no one talking about Malik Cunningham as an option to play over Jones and Zappe?
I saw a glimpse of him in a pre-season game and he moved the chains with his arm and feet.
I understand he's raw but sheesh ... the offense couldn't look any worse than it does now.
I think a running QB like Cunningham would be a way to make that cringe O-line less of an issue.
When WR's cant get separation and the pocket collapses, let the kid take off and run like the wind.
Yes it would be a very different offense and playbook ... but isn't that what they need? "start all over" as Belichick just said.

bbbut, bbbut - I thought Bill O was supposed to turn things around? the great coach who traded Dhop in houston. The guy who did nothing with penn state. the guy who was a qb whisperer and would turn mac-n-cheese jones around! what happened???? ppl waxed poetic about ray-mon-drey stevens, dudes on a milk carton where is he? should where a red striped shirt so we can play where's waldo??? this team is more defunct than denver and carolina. BB is gone midseason if not definitely by years end. where's he go then? minnesota? cincy?
cleveland?
how can anyone with a straight face say that mac jones was even half decent? the Law firm is excelling in LV - jacoby meyers ( you know the commercials if you're from NY/ny area)

Truth is that Jones has regressed every year since his rookie year.
Ask yourself, how does a rookie get worse year after year?
> Injuries? Not that anyone is aware.
> Less talent around him? You could argue that this years offense is less talented than that of the previous 2 seasons. But the O-line has been bad for a couple years. Pass receiving options has always been thin during his short tenure. WR's that can not separate combined with no time to throw the ball ... for a QB that has zero speed to escape the pocket. Not a good fit.
> Coaching? IMO I think they have this kids head spinning. Coaches have got him so screwed up, he doesn't know which way is up. Every season a new OC with new ideas. Lack of consistency.

Pats catch a break getting a bad LV team this week.
I think they might actually double their wins total here.
The defense has had another week to adjust to not having Judon / Gonzales.
The offense might manage to kick several FG's and eek this one out.
Pats 19 / Raiders 17

Hey, whatdayaknow ... report that Malik Cunningham might be joining the roster for this weeks game.
Even if it doesn't happen, at least they are talking about it now.

It sounds like if he does debut Sunday, it may be as a receiver:

I'll say this... If he does play some QB, the game will at least be entertaining this week.
That would also say a lot about the direction of the team going forward... BB actually willing to take a different path than planned on an attempt to save the season.
Would be refreshing

1-5 with 1-7 on the horizon...I feel bad watching BB on the sideline right now and seeing things spiral but it is 100% his own doing...with the way this offense is playing the #1 pick is in play.

tandem rushing 17/80/2 against a middle of the pack rush defense. pardon me if I label this progress.

below average passing performance against a middle of the pack pass defense. solid line from Bourne; no one else getting open.

DeVante Parker did his best N’Keal Harry impersonation. One of the rare solid deep passes by Mac and he lets it go through his hands. Would’ve put them near the Raiders 45 yard line and closer to a field goal try, which no guarantee that it would be made, but at least they’d have a shot. Bad teams just find ways to lose and this is a bad team. Amazing that they even beat the Jets.
