Thursday night was a glimmer of hope. The throw he stuck on Baker on the in-breaking route was good. The downfield pass was perfect even if Baker didn't haul it in. Brissett on the other hand looked pretty bad. I'm aware it's pretty foolish to try and read too much into one preseason game but-- Maye will be starting less than 6 games in. I'd thought Maye would sit the whole year but that seems less likely.

From a fantasy football standpoint, they're all avoids this year. Even my optimism for HH to be a sneaky low end TE1 feels like abandon ship time.

It's going to be panda watch on tackles for next year's draft for me.

Yup...would add in a legit #1 WR and quality young TE as well...hell, would just say offense in general because Andrews is nearing the end and it's not like G is being manned by All-Pros (especially if Mike O ends up back at RT).

Waldman's been saying it from the jump that Maye needed as close to the Jordan Love plan as we could provide. His low dynasty ranking was (at least largely driven by) the belief that Maye's physical gifts and high draft capital would drive a team to push him onto the field before he was ready.

I would be perfectly happy to see Maye sit the whole year. My comment was simply based on seeing two good things from Maye which was more than I'd seen before that. I find throwing drill and 7 on 7 highlights to be borderline depressing. It's the football equivalent of eating skittles for a meal.

Feels like that it is Giardi's thinking...this is a rebuilding year so keep them both (at least at the beginning of the season) and see if one of them pops...I'm pretty sure the Pats don't have their future #1 currently on the roster but if they could get pretty much the rest of the unit squared away that would give them more flexibility moving forward.

I think they are going to end up with a lot of guys that for now or young and inexperienced with none of them seeing enough snaps to really stand out . . . and then what? Come on…when it comes to developing WRs you know exactly who we are talking about…Polk-Baker-Pop and possibly Boutte and Thornton…2 are rookies, 2 are second year players and one is a third year player who is still a project…and 100% you can develop them while Maye is sitting…why wouldn’t you be able to…there is more to learning this craft than simply playing with Maye during real games unless you think practice is meaningless for your young players…Brissett is what he is but he he also a professional who a youngster can work with…this is not a good team this year and IMO it is all about developing a foundation for the future and while Maye is by far the most important player if players like the ones mentioned above develop you gain more flexibility in the rebuild and are a step close to being relevant again…unfortunately due to the mismanagement of the post-Brady years this is the spot they are in.

Mayo said Maye is NE's 2nd best quarterback last night. Not sure he needs to announce much more beyond that. I don't believe Brissett left the field for treatment, and IIRC, he was still on the sidelines for the second half. If he had a serious injury, he would have gone back into the locker room and never come back. Mayo said Brissett would have been able to continue but he was coming out of the game after that drive anyway. Mayo spoke to Brissett this morning and the QB said he was good. Van Pelt has sounded like the plan is to stick with Brissett and that there hasn't really been a competition . . . so I would be really surprised if Maye starts any time soon unless there is an injury to Brissett (which there certainly is a chance of happening).

So far so good with Maye...loving what I am seeing with the kid (and he is a kid...especially when you compare him to Daniels-Nix-Penix)...looking like the Pats have their QB-of-the-future which means this franchise can now move forward which is a relief...AVP is still an unknown and for some reason there are members of the media that seem personally offended about the limited action in week 1 against Carolina but right now the "Maye plan" is working and there is no reason to deviate from it...no doubt Maye will be starting at some point this year, it's just a shame the state of the O line has to play such a big factor in this decision...it's 8/26 so there is only so much you can do to correct it but they need to figure out how to get it to a level where you are at least comfortable Maye will not get hurt (how sad is that)..anyway, besides the fact Maye looks legit it looks like the Pats finally get a mobil QB that many fans have been dying for since the last one they had was pre-neck-guard Steve Grogan.

Would your opinion change if he has numbers similar to Zach Wilson with terrible interceptions, bad decision-making, and the offense can't move the ball? I get that he has athleticism and a strong arm, but his processing and game smarts could still be an issue, especially if he is under constant duress. At this point, I am still taking a wait and see approach with hope that he can look halfway decent by Year 3. However, if the team is really bad, that could be with a new HC and OC . . . meaning another regime may be forced to take him on. NE hasn't done him any favors with the OL and receiving corps he has to work with.

Don't disagree with most of this which is why I gave the 2-3 year window...I do think Wilson is the extreme but I also think he is not mentally fit to be an NFL QB and being in NYC was the absolute worst spot for him...this is a process and right now and I am very pleased with Maye's development (he 100% passes the eye test) especially when you factor in his age, only having played 2 years of college ball and in a system where was not under center often...I am not saying he is a definite because it is far too early for that, but I am saying they can hitch their wagon to him for the next 2-3 years while working on other areas of the team and after that we'll know what we definitely have...there is reason for optimism right now because of Maye but they are a very long way from having it show up in their record.

Unfortunately he's throwing behind receivers and just slightly off target deep. Good wheels too. The absurd lack of talent on the O-line might have this guy starting before the end of season due to QBs ahead of him getting carted off the field. Should be fun.

Good...it's the right move...with the state of that O-line it's just not worth it even though it has become very apparent he is now consistently outplaying Brissett...loosely quoting Bedard when he says it doesn't matter whether he plays 17 or 8 games this season and while he's not sure what the upside of starting him week 1 is he very much knows what the downside is...I still have major question marks about Mayo/AVP but as far as Maye is concerned I like where they are right now...it's all about the long game.

The Pats went from an HC who told you nothing to an HC who tells you too much…it feels like Mayo doesn’t know when to stop talking sometimes or he is thinking out loud…he needs to understand this is the Boston media market and every word matters.

"We have decided, or I have decided, that Jacoby Brissett will be our starting quarterback this season. Now in saying that - as an organization, we're 100% behind Jacoby. There is no, you know, 'You got a guy right here, you got a guy right there.' We're 100% behind Jacoby, and I had an opportunity to talk to Drake. I had an opportunity to talk to Jacoby separately, and also together. And I feel like we're all on the same page from an organizational perspective."

Q: What ultimately led them to choosing Brissett over Maye?

"There were a lot of factors that led to this choice. I think, you know the hard part is, thinking in the short term and the long term at the same time. As an organization, though, we feel like Jacoby gives us our best chance to win right now."

There's been speculation that Wolf, Van Pelt, and possibly Jonathan Kraft are on the same page and Mayo isn't on the direction of the team. Even though Mayo is the head coach, they were discussing this morning that he is getting dictated decisions, yet he has to put on a happy face and get in front of the media and pretend that he made a decision even though his opinion really didn't matter, and he was told what he has to do. IMO, that's a recipe for disaster, as being a puppet head coach is doomed for failure. I'm equally unimpressed with some of the things being described and communicated through the media, like Mayo calling Van Pelt the "head coach of the offense" . . . especially with the way the offense has looked in the preseason . . . almost like it's all on Van Pelt for how things are going, don't blame Mayo, and the media should talk to Van Pelt about all things on the offense.

As you already mentioned, the Felger and Mazz situation is concerning. They already have been spouting that fans would rather see Maye get sacked 8 times with 4 turnovers because they will all talk about a good throw for 2 weeks (like the Baker drop from a few weeks ago) as justification for him to be starting. On the other hand, Brissett could make an equally good deep throw that was dropped (a sideline route that Osborn didn't come down with) and no one cares or will even talk about it. As you said, they have enough to go on without handing them low hanging fruit for them to dive into.

- Play calling. Will they go back to their Patriot way? ... short quick passes over the middle, slot WR, TE, RB pass heavy.
This is what worked for so many years under Belichick & Brady. Move the chains. Control clock. Death by paper cuts.
- Defense. Seems like lots of talent on this side of the ball. Can they improve from last season? Can a young Keon White provide what was lost with Judon being traded?

Things I'm nervous about;
- O-line. We already know they have trouble pass blocking. Can they at least line up correctly and not false start?
Can they complete the snap with the QB under center? So many mistakes by this group in pre-season. Yeah, I'm nervous for them.

With that OL, not sure they will have time for anything much longer than 2-2.5 second releases from the QB. They have already hinted at wanting to be a run first, ball control offense . . . but not sure they have a mauling type OL to facilitate that. I expect a lot of blitzes and a lot of sacks.

IMO, BB's game planning and scheming made the defense what it was. Two vital players won't be in the mix (Judon and Barmore). I expect a noticeable drop off from the defense this year. They ranked 15th in points allowed and 7th in yardage allowed last year. I don't see the offense being better than last year, so I envision both of those ranking to go down multiple spots.

Things I'm nervous about;
- O-line. We already know they have trouble pass blocking. Can they at least line up correctly and not false start?

The only time they played against a starting-level defense was the scrimmage against the Eagles and they got unequivocally pulverized. Between the injuries, inexperience, lack of chemistry, limited reps together, and a rotating cast of characters, I am afraid how things will look the first few weeks of the season. The Jets, Niners, and Dolphins were all Top 10 defenses last year (their opponents in Weeks 3-5).

I'm not an OL coach, but I am pretty sure repetition, communication, consistency, and chemistry is what gets a line to gel. Not sure the let's-try-everybody-and-maybe-some-combination-might-work is the best strategy. Guess we'll find out.

Higgins will "more likely than not" miss the game (listed as doubtful). Chase is officially listed as questionable due to rest (on a walkthrough practice, no less). If Chase doesn't play, I don't think it has anything at all to do with his health. I saw / heard earlier that he is getting closer to resolving his contract situation. He did say that if he does suit up, he would probably be limited. IMO, that would just mean he doesn't play every snap (and they would use him when needed).

I think CIN could score 7 points and win. IMO, once the bullets go live, they won’t have many bullets. I expect a lot of mistakes, tons of penalties, blown assignments, and a coaching staff punching above their weight. CIN 27-6 . . . and that’s with their key pieces missing.

Google tells me the record for most sacks allowed in a season was set by the Giants last year - with 85. I really don't want to see Maye break that record but with this OL it would be in play. I'd prefer he become the starter somewhere in mid November. I hope Brissett can last that long.
