Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (4 Viewers)

Read that Pats win against the Jags on strength of schedule no matter what happens. Worst case they tie and the Jags beat them head to head. So if true, worst the pats can do is the 4th pick. Two QBs will most definitely go in the top 4 so they get their 2nd choice of non QBs. That said, if they win they cost themselves atleast a high 2nd if not more in draft collateral for moving down a couple spots from 1 and getting the same player. No guarantees obviously.
IIRC, head-to-head doesn't matter in draft seeding / tiebreakers. And when teams are tied for losses, the draft spot rotates from round to round. If things stay as they are, NE would have the 1.01, 2.04, 3.03, 4.02, and 5.01 (they traded their own 6th rounder).
I believe if two teams have the same record and SOS, head to head is the next tiebreaker. Could be wrong.

Teams don't usually have ties for strength of schedule. But yes, head-to-head is the next tiebreaker. From what I have seen, if NE loses next week, they will have the worst SOS no matter what. Not sure if their SOS could end up tied with another team if they manage to win.

Yeah, if they lose they are #1. Only team that is close on strength of schedule is the Jags, who have one more win than them right now. Pats win and Jags lose, they could tie on strength of schedule worse case and Pats would get the higher pick at #4

The NFL league site mentioned they could fall all the way to #5 with a win if an exact set of outcomes happens. Not sure what that scenario is though.

This dude could be wrong with his calculations, not sure if anyone else has actually calculated the scenarios given their SOS is so close right now. Hopefully they do the smart thing and lose.

Are there any non-bolded teams which have at least a small amount of interest in drafting a first round quarterback?

How do the Pats maximize value in their situation?

Current Draft Order:
1. New England
2. Tennessee
3. Cleveland
4. NY Giants

5. Jacksonville
6. Carolina
7. NY Jets
8. Las Vegas

9. Chicago
10. New Orleans

17. Seattle
23. LA Rams
25. Pittsburgh

Not sure if his math or methodology is right, but here are the current SOS standings for teams with 3 or 4 losses from the NFL site:

NEP .447, JAC .475, CAR .496, NYJ .502, TEN .510, CLE .531, NYG .535, LV .539, CHI .546

I have no idea how much any of those could change in the last week of the season.

Not sure why Douglas didn't have a better season. IIRC, he ranks 4th in the league for WR in separation and 6th in catch percentage. He gets open, he catches the football, and Maye is usually very accurate. Why wasn't this more of a thing this year?

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will start Sunday's Week 18 game at the New England Patriots to keep his consecutive starts streak going but then soon after come off the field, coach Sean McDermott said Monday.

...McDermott said that for the rest of the team, it will be a mix of normal starters and "some guys who we want to take a look at as well."

Per Mike Reiss, Maye said he feels good and is preparing to start.

Ugh.

If that's the case, it better be for no more than a quarter.

Now Van Pelt saying Maye will start.

Idiots.

They have an opening (i.e. head, finger injuries) to sit him. There's nothing to be gained here.

Sure wish Kraft would step in and put his foot down.

Don't pull a NYGs.

This franchise is in a downward spiral and is becoming a laughingstock. Idiots

I'd be curious to see what those splits look like between the 6 games where Brissett had the majority of snaps (5 starts plus the Jets game where he played 3 quarters after Maye's concussion) and the 10 games thus far that Maye has played majority of the snaps. I remember Brissett's problem was missing open guys downfield, particularly Douglas.

In wrestling terms the Krafts and John Henry having taken a heel turn…somehow the two franchises have gone from winning 10 titles to not knowing how to tie their shoes anymore.

Milton said to have taken some first team reps in practice this week. That was the first time he did that this year, as he was exclusively their scout team QB. Van Pelt said the intent is to win the game, and the current plan is for Maye to play the entire game. Not sure what they are going to do or if this is just subterfuge. There really isn't any reason to try to win. Maybe they will play their regular starters but be so conservative that the offense stalls at every turn. Like call running play after running play and always punting even on fourth and an inch.

Besides tanking for the #1 and keeping Maye healthy they should want to see what Milton can do…you used a 6th round pick on him and Brisset only signed a one year deal so why not play him and see how much he has developed this year and whether he can be a potential asset going forward.

Schefter on Mayo: Leaning that he's "out."

This would be quite the turn. I find it hard to believe and feel like Kraft will do the wrong thing here.

I'm sure Mayo could be a good coach at some point, but there is such a great opportunity here for Kraft.

Furious.

Need an act of god at this point to keep the #1 pick.

What's worse, is that Kraft may keep these guys around after showing some "fight" for Mayo.
I think it makes him more likely to go honestly. Pretty obvious, judging by playing time of some starters, that management wanted to lose this game. Mayo out there smiling, running down the sidelines, giving high fives can’t sit well. Granted it’s not all his fault, the Bills were trying to lose too so somebody is gonna get the W but it still has to be infuriating. #1 pick was theirs and they gave it away for nothing. The fans hate this ******* team.

Hope you're right.

Losing out on the benefits of the #1 pick AND keeping this crew around will be tough pills to swallow.

At #4, I don't think T. Hunter will be around either. Oof.

Looks like it's either OT Banks or WR McMillan.

Oh man, M. Felger is going to be brutal this week.

Felger wanted them to try to win and not tank. He shouldn’t complain. They did exactly as he suggested (although he thought they would lose). His example was the Texans and they ended up with Stroud.

If they can Mayo and Wolf I am totally fine ending up with the #4...that is far more important because they are inept...at least this wasn't a year where there was a "can't miss" stud QB that teams will overpay for...get rid of those two, hire some adults and stay at #4 and take one of Hunter, McMillan. Campbell or Banks and you will be heading in the right direction...keep Mayo and Wolf and you will have a fan revolt that will be beyond ugly.

Felger is brutal every week, I'm sure he'll find time to complain and whine even if he said they should try to win.

Yeah, if this win gets them fired it was a blessing. Bills have to be laughing their asses off. Patriots truly are a laughing stock. You bring those clowns back and I think there’s going to be a lot of empty seats by week 4 next year. Only disagreement is the choice of picks. Team has needs across the entire franchise. If Hunters not there I think I’d rather they pick the second best player in the draft in Abdul Carter and address WR and Oline later and in free agency. Get wanting to build around Maye but I don’t think you can pass on Micah Parsons.

If they address OT and WR in free agency I think going best available player makes sense. The Michigan CB would also be nice opposite Gonzalez.

The only thing that matters this offseason IMO is surrounding Maye with the best talent possible...they have a long way to go but that is all that matters right now...we can worry about the D later.

How many years have they needed OT and WR and had money to spend? How many premium guys have they signed? They couldn’t get people to come here even when Brady was still around. Do you actually think it will be any different this time around? Who is even available? Higgins likely staying in CIN.

Agree but I’m not sure those are the guys. From my untrained eye there are two game breakers in this draft.

Always seem to be good WRs available for trade. They change teams every year.

There are plenty of upgrades available at these positions this coming free agency.

I'd think they have better luck this year with Maye in the fold. It's pretty clear the kid has talent and he can get an alpha dog the ball.

If we clean house and get a guy like Vrabel, I'd think that makes NE even more attractive as a destination.

I'd hope their money talks a bit more than last year when they whiffed on Ridley and Aiyuk.

Right now it doesn't appear to be a star-studded draft...I just think if you get a chance to get a legit LT (Banks or Campbell) or a potential #1 WR (McMillan or Hunter) that can grow with Maye that is your most effective way forward...my biggest issue is I don't want Wolf making this decision...it has to be a professional-level talent evaluator because they have almost no room for error right now.

Mayo fired!

Wow.

Just saw that...now can Wolf and we can start looking forward to 2025...maybe there is hope!
I'm surprised they did it. Even more surprised so quickly.

Has to be a backstory here. I wonder if his press conference was the last straw.

Also may mean they want to move quickly on Vrabel.
Guessing that FU win pissed them off as much as it did the fans.

I have zero issues with Vrabel...with the state of this franchise he is the type of personality they need.

Already had a statement prepared and it's already out.

They must have already made up their minds prior to today.

Agreed...this was a done deal...how could it not have been...it has been a complete train wreck...I give Kraft credit for checking the ego and doing the right thing.

IMO, they need to tear the bandaid off and start over. I want a new regime that has no ties to BB or NE whatsoever. They need a fresh perspective and new ideas. I don’t want anyone coming in that already has relationships with owners, staff, and the front office.
