Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (5 Viewers)

Ugly night of football for the Pats tonight...I don't think any starters played and if they did it was minimal...optimistic about the season but they are still a year away from having the proper depth needed...their backup QB situation is not good...Maye can't miss any time or they are in big trouble...would not be surprised if they made some type of move to beef this area up even if it is just the practice squad.

Edit-Keion White played the first 1/2 and Peppers played the first 1/4...interesting that White played (and not good that I didn't even notice him)...real tough player to get a handle on...looks the part but can disappear.

Just took Chism and Kyle Williams in the 26th and 27th rounds of a PPR best ball redraft. Hoping at least one of these guys will produce this year. Chism has looked really really good in the preseason, do most Patriots fans think he's a lock to make the final roster? to be a contributor this year?
 
I wanted to thank the posters for the Patriots we have in here. All of you do a great job of bringing information to all of us that we overlook
I am optimistic about several players in New Eng this year
I'm not sure who the WR1 is just yet, i know people will say Diggs but I think young Maye will throw to anyone who can catch the ball and move the sticks
I have high hopes for Trey Henderson, he's gonna break some long runs

Soft Serve Schedule is gonna help...play Steelers and Bills but have 4 cupcake types the first 6 weeks and then you get another 3 scoops of soft serve before the Bucs
It sets up nicely for Vrabel and his approach to offense and what he wants to see out there.
Eat up clock and keep his defense fresh

I have the Pats penciled in for 2nd in the East, wildcard or in the hunt is very possible, I do feel good leadership/Vrabel will help a lot
He beat the Phins as the Titans HC twice I think, totally upended their 2023 season before they limped into the Playoffs

Wolf said the same thing last week. I don't think they have anyone lined up. They are trying to spark interest in a player that isnt happy some place else.

If they are to deal a #1 it has to be for a big fish that still has a good amount of years left...I like the direction they are heading (I see them in that 8-9 win area) but they are still not as deep as you want them to be (hopefully they will be this time next year)...if the injury bug hits their won-loss record could be disappointing and that #1 pick could be a good one.

I just don't see how. They will likely have to trade for someone with a year left on his deal and then pay something like 5/$150M for an immediate extension. No big fish with a ton of years left would be available IMO. Not having any idea who the options are makes the discussion very pre-mature. Even though they have the money, bringing in a guy in his 30s for that kind of money still would likely be unwise.

I don't disagree...my big picture statement is I am not moving a #1 for any short-term fixes...they aren't in a position to be taking that kind of chance.

What to you makes it worth it? Say they get in someone that's already 30 with a year left and then give out that deal I mentioned. 5/$150. I don't think McClaurin or Hendrickson are worth the pick or the money. Parsons would be a different story, and a single first probably doesn't get that done.

Hendrickson is the type of situation I would avoid...very good player but they just don't match his timeline...McLaurin is a moot point since he got extended...he was intriguing because he helps Maye develop but still a touch to old...agree that Parsons costs more than a #1 and while he is young the Pats still have too many holes to be making a deal that probably costs multiple #1's and probably more...an example of what I would do would be the deal Vrabel got pissed about while with the Titans...AJB for a #1.

He's exactly the type of guy they should throw draft capital and money at. Gives them a foundational edge rusher to anchor the front of the defense. But the Cowboys will eventually extend him. Jerry Jones just needs to make a circus out of it first.

That makes sense.
Maybe it's an announcement to his former players and friends that he's looking.

I'm sure he'd be thrilled to get gems from Schwartz or Bowen's defenses. If not that, maybe there's a followup about a player that doesn't cost as much.

I see Jakobi on X and I think Vrabel probably does not want an older player that Belichick and Brady didn't want to keep. Plus the Pats have to let the younger players play. Any veteran addition possibly stunts the development of a younger one.

Question: On starting LG, has it become more clear in recent days?

Mike Vrabel: “We’re not making anything official; it will be the 5 guys out there with the first group today. But as far as having a parade or anything about it, we’re just not going to do that right now.”

Probably should have won the job, but they're not going to release a kicker they used decent draft capitol on.

In other news, I see old friend T. Brown was released. A couple other lineman. Hope they go fishing for some depth on the O line.

The Pats used the pick they got from trading away Mac Jones to draft Joe Milton, then eventually traded Milton and used the pick they got from him to get Borregales. I liked him out of Miami so I hope it works out, and hope the Pats can retain Romo on the practice squad in case it doesn’t.
 
Not a big surprise but would say this is the first cut I was surprised by...Jones was pretty noticeable in the preseason and I think a lot of the media thought he did not enough to make the team.

A feel-good story is coming to an end: Defensive end Truman Jones, who went undrafted out of Harvard in 2023, is being released, per ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Jones impressed in training camp and was on Phil Perry's most recent 53-man roster projection. His departure could make it more likely that Anfernee Jennings lands a roster spot.
 

Efton Chism III has made the Patriots' roster: Report​

The Efton Chism III hype train is still running.

The Patriots have informed the undrafted rookie wide receiver he's made the 53-man roster, Mass Live's Mark Daniels reports. Linebacker Elijah Ponder has made the team as well, per Daniels.

Chism was a standout in the preseason, racking up 12 catches on 14 targets for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns over two games.
 
Looks like the Pats are keeping 8 WRs…pretty surprised by this…be interesting to see if some other move happens soon…Diggs, Williams, Hollis and Pop were the definites going into this…Boutte raised his game and was pretty much a lock for awhile…Chism played his way onto the team and deserved it…Baker was very iffy…he may be there more for special teams since he really didn’t show too much as a WR…Bourne is the real surprise here…he has been MIA for the past month and with the youngsters playing well it looked like they were moving on from him but as of now he is on the team…tough to believe they will be carrying 8 WRs for a long time.

I’m really surprised the Pats and 49ers didn’t hammer out a deal to reunite Bourne with Shanny. He fits a need with their WRs hurting.
 
Outside of keeping 8 WRs the only big surprise to me is cutting Swinson…looked like a sneaky good pick in the 5th round but he is gone…Strange got the ax…what a foolish pick by BB…Tavai to the IR so he is gone for the year…overall 11 rookies made the team…hopefully they can be the foundation of this turnaround.

Further context: LB Jahlani Tavai has been designated to return from IR, so he is still eligible to play in 2025.

WR Ja'Lynn Polk was not designated for return, so he will miss the 2025 season.

However, the Patriots' current roster is thinner than most of those squads. What did you expect in one offseason?

This is in in itself mostly meaningless number. It's always been close to that % from year to year. They have rotated depth pieces and special teamers, lost free agents, didn't offer new deals, etc. They just made more changes to starters than they have had previously. Some of the starting spots are upgrades. Who knows about some others. They should be better than the past two seasons, mostly because it would be really hard for them to be worse. IMO, they are still Bottom 10 in terms of overall roster talent. But that's better than Bottom 3.

11 rookies making the team is beyond important...BB's last few years and the one-year pre-Vrabel this team's roster was driven into a ditch and it is not going to get out of it unless they draft well...still very early but this looks like a quality draft/UDFA class with Campbell, Wilson and Henderson expected to be starters on offense, Bryant as the swing tackle who could eventually be a starting RT and Chism and Williams both with an opportunity to be contributors...on D it looks like Woodson will start, Farmer will rotate in on the line, Ponder seems like a diamond in the rough who should at least be a special teamer and hopefully the kicker and long-snapper can nail those spots down for a number of years...I know you don't like Vrabel but I could not be happier with what he has done since he got hired.

Josh loves him some Jakob. Coached him for five straight seasons between 2019 and 2023 with the Pats and Raiders. They lost Lampe to IR so if they still want to bring back the fullback position, he’s not a bad option.

They have been using Westover in that role right now...will be interesting to see what they do since Westover seems to be doubling as the third TE as well.

A note on Swinson. As I mentioned in the NFL Notebook last weekend, he was just sort of...there. I expected more explosion and more violence out of him as a rusher but it never really happened. Still somewhat surprised he got cut, and wonder if some team who had a decent grade on him in the draft process makes a claim.
 
Pats claimed Tommy DeVito…makes sense…they needed another QB and this kid is worth a look…Bourne gone…asked for his release…I thought him not getting cut was the biggest surprise yesterday…not sure if they were sitting on him to trade him and he got tired of waiting but while I am not surprised he is gone (Ithought he was the odd man out as the youngsters played well in camp) how it went down is a little odd…they also claimed a CB named Charles Woods…no idea what his deal is…none of their cuts got claimed so they are eligible to be added to the practice squad.

Apparently they were trying to work a deal to send Bourne to Minnesota but that fell through when the Vikings took the Thielen deal.

Woolridge wasn't getting snaps some days and I don't like that about the NFL. Anywho, Devito is your scout team QB.

He's got moxie and a lot of nerve. Maybe questionable as a starter but he would often get mentioned in in-season Giants practice notes and when does a third string QB ever get mentioned? It seems he's custom made for that role.

Carl Banks and Phil Simms thought the Giants would regret letting him go and told some good stories of practice guys that rarely played. With 13 in season padded practices, a depth guy that'll keep em on their toes otherwise seems to have some value.

If Devito gets mentioned at practice this season, go to the secondary coach or DC interview video. I'd bet $ they're upset and maybe maybe ya get a hint some guy could be benched.

Would love to have him but IMO they can't make a move like this until they have surrounded Maye with a high-quality line and a real good group of WRs/TEs...he is not Brady in his prime who could make do with less...the most important thing for this franchise is developing Maye to become an elite QB (and I believe they will) that they then can make do with a little less...if they deal two #1's and give out that deal that makes accomplishing that far more difficult and if Maye doesn't develop it won't matter if they have Parsons.

That's wild to me. Peppers is one of the 10 best Safeties in the NFL when he's healthy, which to be fair he wasn't for much of last season.

Vrabel has been quick to move on from those who aren’t buying in to team over individual (see Joe Milton). Either Peppers was being demoted and he responded poorly to the news, or something worse outside of football forced the team’s hand. I hope we get some sort of closure either way soon.
