Injuries in the NFL > Frequency & impact on the Fantasy Game (1 Viewer)

It seems we're seeing substantially more injuries over the last few years in the NFL. This week is already seeing many marquee players dinged up. The game is a violent one, no doubt... however at what point does this sort of trend begin to impact the traditional game of fantasy football?

Obviously this has less of an impact on the daily game...

It's barely an hour into Week 2 and already we've lost Moreno, Green, DJax, and Martin. Plus AP suspended during the week...

Just wait til the bye weeks hit. It's getting to be very difficult (and frustrating) to even try to keep up. That's why I started a thread a little while back asking if daily leagues would replace seasonal. The carnage two weeks into this season is pretty substantial. It's starting to be no fun -- this might be my last year doing seasonal. And this isn't a knee-jerk reaction...I've been thinking about this for about 2 years now. I've been doing seasonal since 1998.

Of course, so many FF participants are so rabid about it that I'm sure I'll be ripped in this thread. If seasonal is to survive, I think expanded rosters and/or lineups, in-game swapping, multiple waiver runs daily, larger FAABs, etc. might have to become the norm so owners can reasonably patch up their line ups. Some adjustments have to be made for seasonal FF to remain relevant with daily breathing down its neck.

For the record... I only own AJ in one league (of 6) and don't own any of the other injured players. Just crazy watching this week unfold.

I'm not sure what the answer is... deeper benches draw complaints from some owners that the wire is barren.

The idea of an injury-flex is an intriguing one... what would the criteria be? Auto-deploy if someone doesn't start? If someone is hurt before halftime?

In game swapping is interesting... has roots in the reality of swapping in guys in the real NFL. Would obviously not allow for retroactive stats. Couldn't be unlimited (ie no juggling RBs whenever they're in the red zone). That said one or two live swaps per week could go a long way.

Not many ways you can combat this.

One small thing could be changing to Team QB in leagues, but only one QB went down today and most will say it was foreseeable, so...

I don't really see this as an issue at all. Injuries are part of the game. They can happen to anyone. Part of the skill of season long FF leagues is being able to manage injuries. Sure, it's possible that a couple of big injuries can kill your whole season, but other times that will happen to your opponents and you will benefit. In the long run the injuries will all even out and in the end those best at managing their rosters and building depth will win out.

Same as it ever was.
Yeah... not so much.

The large spike was due to increased accountability for injury reporting... however since then FootballOutsiders tracking of AGL (Adjusted games lost) have shown record numbers for each of the last 3 seasons.

TL:DR: Injuries have been steadily rising.

I'm seriously thinking about making this my last season playing FFl. And I consider myself a good/competitive player. It's just not fun anymore and starting to become a waste of time.

Totally with you. I've been playing since '98, won a number of leagues, always used to enjoy it. But the last two seasons have been a disaster as far as seasonal leagues go -- especially this year, which is only two weeks old! I think the future is daily leagues, where you are wedded to a roster only for a week. My head's spinning and I already feel exhausted by all the goings on with injuries, suspensions, misleading coach speak, etc. We all know there's a lot of luck involved but man, like you, I feel like I don't even have fun; it's becoming a chore.

So in the 3 seasons that they've been able to accurately track injuries they've recorded more injuries than in the season that they couldn't accurately track injuries? Interesting...

why do you guys who are thinking about calling it quits play fantasy football? if it's just to watch NFL and pick some players, going to daily won't be a big deal at all. if it's to play with friends, nothing will replace season-long

It happens, sure it's a bad day but we don't have many official diagnoses yet who knows how many of these will be long term.

I think 1999 was worse than this so far with Terrell Davis, Jamal Anderson and Vinny Testaverde all coming off career years and going down for the season. And I am sure Trent Green owners felt robbed of what might have been.

take it less seriously and you'll be fine. doesn't mean you have to quit all together. you don't have to dedicate your life to this ####.

To have an excuse to do a little research, to see those educated guesses be at least somewhat more productive than random guesswork, to have a rooting interest in a number of games, etc...but if everyone you select drops like flies left and right, a lot of that goes away. And seriously even as far as the real game goes, do you want to see AP or Asiata? Big names have always fallen, but this season is crazy. If you can provide stats to the contrary, I'm willing to recant but it sure seems worse than most of the last 16 years I've played.

guys are bigger, stronger, and faster than they've ever been. joints, ligaments, tendons, bones, etc. can only take so much.

Awful lotta luck to seasonal leagues. One day you might be sitting there thinking your unbeatable with 2 monster stud backs and for some crazy reason (not even football related) you wake up the next morning and your best player has been suspended. It would be like playing competitive chess with someone and some passerby decides to pick up your queen as he walks by and say's "good luck now sucker".

You need 4 good RBs to even make the playoffs. At least 2 of them will get hurt at some point in the season.

Team QB

Team RB

Team WR

Team TE

Team K

Team Def

Simple and something everyone can agree with.

This week is nuts and is an outlier IMO.

Just love people calling traditional FF "seasonal". IMO the game will evolve like it always has. The latest trend is zero RB...no matter what trends happen in the future, there will be new theories evolving in response. I'm sure the daily leagues will keep growing but I doubt people will abandon traditional FF. The satisfaction of drafting a team, setting lineups and working the WW cannot be matched with a team you draft for a week. It's like comparing mutual funds to scratch-offs.

Zero RB as in don't require an RB or require only 1 or just flex 'em. Not Zero RB as in draft bargain RBs later. One such bargain back, Moreno, already went down today, so even drafting 'em late is not protection. But it might hurt less since you only gave up a late pick rather than a top-3 round one to get the dude.

RB is most likely to see injuries, so it follows that people will take RB later outside of the obvious studs. "Zero RB" from what I've read means loading up on WR, QB and TE early, then taking a lot of backup & high upside RBs later. IMO it's more a response to RBBC and RB specialization than it is to injuries, though both are a factor.

I would never take a RB in the first round again. Get Graham or a stud WR. Stockpile RBs later and grab handcuffs off waivers to win your league.

I wouldn't say "never" if I've got a top 3 pick and there are obvious stud RBs...but I've been taking QBs in the first round for the past several years despite the experts suggesting that it's a guppy move. It's crazy all the podcasts I've heard and never once have I heard them "admit" they own Peyton, Brees or Rodgers, like it's too easy or something.

The pro game has become too fast and too strong. Bones, joints, and protective gear haven't evolved fast enough to compensate.
