Jamaal Charles: In the Chiefs' RB Mix - 5/29/2008 8:54:58 AM

Update:

Coach Herm Edwards said he plans to get Charles the ball "maybe 10-12 times a game," but added that it won't be more than that "because he can't take the pounding," Yahoo! Sports reports.

Recommendation:

We know Larry Johnson is going to get the bulk of the work; the real question is whether Charles or Kolby Smith will be the better backup to own. Twelve touches per game is a pretty significant number, so it's hard to imagine Smith would receive more than that. Of course, Edwards' plan in May could be drastically different come September, and training camp performances will play a major role in determining who will emerge as Johnson's top backup.
NFL Insider
Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson said he is as good as ever. Johnson, who missed the final eight games of last season with a foot injury, said he is back to his 2006 form, when he rushed for 1,789 yards.

Johnson feels responsible for the Chiefs' season-ending, nine-game losing streak. Kansas City was 4-4 before he was injured.

"When I was playing," Johnson said told Kansas City reporters, "everybody's main emphasis was on stopping the run. When you didn't have me back there those last couple of games, it was like: All hell is going to break loose. You might as well blitz them until they can complete a pass."

The Chiefs drafted UT's Jamaal Charles to be Johnson's backup, and Johnson requested that Charles' locker be next to his. But Johnson, who is entering his sixth season and turns 29 in November, said while he wants to mentor Charles he also wants to prove he's "not that old."
Ten to Twelve touches isn't that much (192 over a season) but I am surprised at how team oriented LJ is being about it. This draft class is so interesting with the number of role-playing RBs that got drafted to have an impact immediately.

why would you be surprised that LJ is being team oriented? He's 29, got paid and probably needs the breather during games, he cant handle another 400 + touch season anyway, I see this as a positive for LJ somewhat

That's nice but it will all depend on how successful the offense ends up being. Talk is cheap and everyone knows that Herm likes to lean on one guy. Will he change his stripes? We'll see.

Herm doesn't plan to run his stud RB into the ground? That's more interesting to me than this Charles news. Regardless, I don't think this makes him a viable handcuff. If something were to happen to LJ I believe Kolby would see a significant increase in touches and Charles only a small increase, if any. That said, a RBBC between Kolby and Charles behind that OLine on that offense reaks of desparation start at best in regards to fantasy.

I've always seen Charles as a change of pace back rather than an heir to the throne, so this isn't really big news to me. He should provide a spark off the bench if Herm will actually let him get on the field.

Exactly. I can't help but be reminded of the countless times Herm said he wanted to get LaMont Jordan more touches as he continued to run Curtis Martin into the ground.

35 catches doesn't seem unreasonable to me if he does get 192 touches. That could lead to a final stat line of:160-640-3

35-240-1

That would be good for 147 points, or about 9/week in ppr which would make him an RB3. Considering that's what you could get if LJ is healthy, and it obviously only goes up from there if LJ gets hurt, that's not bad at all.

Charles wasn't on the roster last year obviously but in the game LJ was healthy he had 86% of the carries. This is coming off the training camp holdout no less. If you discount the 1st two games since he was just getting into game shape at that point, he got 90% of the carries games over the next 6 games. Herm certainly likes to give his horse the ball.

Good news for LJ dynasty owners. We need him kept fresh. I think this could extend his career to 31 as a full time cow bell. The guy is a beast and has low milage for his age. That one season of over 400 carries will not happen again.

On the other hand as far as Charles is concerned keep in mind this kid has never had a full off-season in the weight room because of his track commitments in college. So I expect over the next couple of years for Charles to bulk up a bit below the waste. He is a great talent and can become a #1 Rb in this league. Dynasty owners should just roster the kid and be patient.

I really, really like Jamaal Charles. I believe he's going to burst onto the NFL scene in 2010 (if not sooner). I've learned to ignore the HC's comments about a RB not being able to take the pounding. Dollars to doughnuts it's motivation for Charles to work hard (like Shanny's earlier comments concerning Selvin Young's inability to carry the load). I've also seen comments about Charles not being able to put on weight, but all he needs is 10 pounds. On his frame, that can definitely be done. There's no reason to think he can't handle 17/18 carries (occasionally more) as a feature back.

Q: How much are you looking at the competition between Sams and Robinson for the role of returner?

EDWARDS: “It’ll be good and [Jamall] Charles is going to be back there on kickoffs. Those two guys will be back there more on punts. Both guys have the skill and Sams is a veteran guy who has done it before and Robinson did it well in college. They’ve both got good hands; the ball doesn’t hit the ball a lot which is the most important thing.”

Just FYI, in case any of you guys get points for returning. I'm biased and all but this is one area in which I think that Charles will really excel.

That's interesting about Jamaal returning kicks. He never returned any kicks in college, so I'll be interested to see how he performs in that role. He's definitely got the speed for it.

It was a missed block by Charles that got Brodie Croyle hurt, but I guess Herm's got a platoon of QBs he can use. :bag:

Nothing more than a lack of experience. He's a good blocker and more importantly a willing blocker. He just needs to get the reads down. Looked good last week and KC does need to get him in the game. He can score from anywhere on the field.
Going to be a similar situation as Chris Johnson's

:lmao: Jamaal is not a good blocker and has fumbling issues. I wish him well, but I've watched him play many, many times.

Charles missed a blocking assignment that led to Croyle getting hurt last week. I'd imagine that does not bode well for him getting more looks from the coaching staff - especially on 3rd down.

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/chiefs/story/794841.htmlThis article came out after that, so it doesnt seem to be an issue.

Also Edwards said "touch the ball" not carry the ball. He doesnt have to be in the backfield blocking in order to touch the ball.
